Choose a transition that suits the moment
OBS Studio provides Cut and Fade from first launch. Cut changes scenes immediately; Fade softens the change or can create a brief pause. OBS also lists Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, and Luma Wipe among the additional choices in its Scene Transitions controls. Each transition’s duration can be adjusted, but there is no universal setting that will look smooth for every scene or stream. Preview or record a test and choose timing that fits your content. Prepare a scene without showing your edits
Studio Mode separates the scene viewers currently see from the scene you are editing. Use the edit view to select and check the next scene, then send it live when it is ready.
- Open Studio Mode in OBS Studio.
- Select the next scene in the edit view and check its sources and layout.
- Use Transition, a configured Quick Transition, or an assigned hotkey to take that scene live.
This gives you a chance to inspect the target scene before the audience sees it. For the exact controls, see the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Set a reliable scene-switching hotkey
Hotkeys are useful when you want to switch without reaching for the mouse. In OBS, assign a shortcut to the specific scene you want to activate. Choose keys that are easy to reach but unlikely to conflict with the game or application you are capturing. Test the shortcut with your normal setup before using it live.
Streamlabs Desktop also supports scene-switching hotkeys. A programmable controller such as a Stream Deck or Loupedeck can trigger configured hotkeys, but a physical controller is optional; the keyboard remains a viable way to switch. Use a stinger when you want an animated transition
A stinger plays video over a scene change, with the underlying cut occurring at a chosen point. OBS lets you specify that cut point in milliseconds or frames. Set it to match the moment in the animation when the outgoing scene should give way to the incoming one, then rehearse the transition with the actual scenes and audio.
Track-matte timing and file layout
In an OBS track-matte stinger, the animated mask determines how the old scene gives way to the new one: black represents the outgoing scene, white the incoming scene, and gray values allow a blend. OBS says it cannot guarantee that separate stinger and matte files will decode in sync, so it recommends arranging both parts in one file, side-by-side or stacked. OBS Track Matte Stinger Transitions

For two 1920×1080 portions, OBS’s layout examples are 3840×1080 side-by-side or 1920×2160 stacked. These are examples for that source size, not mandatory dimensions for every project. Elgato’s stinger guidance describes WEBM as a format that supports transparency, gives 1920×1080 as a common streaming resolution, and also discusses cut points specified by frame or time. Confirm the requirements of your particular software and asset rather than treating those examples as universal rules. Elgato Stinger Transitions
Rehearse and troubleshoot the full switch
Before going live, test each important change from its starting scene through the trigger and transition to the destination scene. Check the timing, audio, and destination sources in the same conditions you expect to use on stream. Documentation describes configuration options, not a guaranteed result on every computer.
