OBS Studio is the best all-around starting point for screen recording on Linux if you need scenes, several video or audio sources, recording controls, or the option to stream. For a quick, simple clip, a desktop-native recorder or Kooha may be a better fit. The right choice depends especially on whether your session uses X11 or Wayland and, on Wayland, which desktop or compositor you use.
Which Linux screen recorder should you choose?
| Tool | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Tutorials, presentations, gameplay, and recordings that need multiple sources, scenes, audio adjustments, or streaming. | Confirm your Linux session and test the exact capture source and audio workflow you need. |
| Kooha or a desktop-native recorder | Quick, uncomplicated screen captures. | Check whether your desktop supports the capture mode you need, such as a monitor, window, or region. |
| wf-recorder or wl-screenrec | Specialized Wayland-related workflows. | Check current project documentation and compatibility with your compositor before choosing. |
| SimpleScreenRecorder | An additional option to compare for traditional desktop recording. | Current Wayland compatibility is not established here; verify it for your setup. |
These are workflow-based recommendations, not results from controlled tests. OBS has the strongest primary documentation among these options for its feature set and Linux requirements; the cross-tool comparisons are secondary guidance, so confirm alternatives against current project documentation.
Why OBS Studio is the leading all-around choice
The OBS Project describes OBS Studio as “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming.” It supports Linux and documents real-time audio and video capture and mixing, configurable scenes, multiple capture sources, and an audio mixer. Those controls make it a strong starting point when you need to combine a screen with a webcam, adjust audio, or prepare more than one scene. See OBS Studio’s official feature and platform information.
That breadth is not a guarantee that OBS is the simplest recorder for a one-off clip. If all you need is a short capture with little setup, compare it with your desktop’s built-in recorder or Kooha. A microphone is optional: it can help for narrated tutorials, but you do not need one to record the screen.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check Linux and Wayland compatibility before settling on an app
Identify your session and capture target
OBS lists both X Window System and Wayland in its Linux system requirements, while cautioning that meeting its requirements does not guarantee a system can record or stream successfully. Review OBS’s system requirements. Before relying on any recorder, determine whether your session is X11 or Wayland, identify your desktop or compositor, and decide whether you need full-display, window, or region capture.
Test the exact workflow on Wayland
Wayland capture behavior can differ by desktop, compositor, and capture mode. A recent comparison discusses this variation, but it does not establish universal support or failure for every tool and environment. Use the comparison as a starting point, then verify your own setup. In particular, confirm that the application can capture the specific monitor, window, or region you want and that its audio sources work in your session.

Install OBS Studio using guidance for your distribution
- Open the OBS Linux installation guide. Use the official Linux Installation page and follow the instructions for your distribution; package routes can differ.
- Launch OBS and build a minimal recording setup. Add the screen or window capture source you intend to record, then add any optional microphone, webcam, or other input source. Configure scenes and audio in OBS as needed.
- Make a short test recording. Check that the desired display area appears, narration or system audio is present when expected, and the saved recording plays correctly. Test under the same session and capture mode you will use for the real recording.
- Adjust and retest before a long session. If capture or sound is missing, change the source or permission workflow appropriate to your environment, then record another short sample rather than assuming a compatible system requirement guarantees success.
Choose a simpler recorder for quick clips
If you do not need OBS’s scenes and production controls, compare Kooha and the recorder integrated into your desktop. Their appeal is a simpler capture workflow, but the available capture modes can depend on your session. For a specialized Wayland workflow, wf-recorder and wl-screenrec are also candidates; verify current features and compositor compatibility in the projects’ own documentation before relying on them. A secondary Linux software roundup also includes SimpleScreenRecorder, but that alone does not establish its present compatibility with Wayland. See the secondary roundup for additional options.
Common Linux screen-recording problems and fixes
- The screen is blank or the target cannot be selected: Check whether you are on X11 or Wayland, then verify that the recorder supports the current compositor and the capture mode you need. Try the desktop-native recorder or another suitable tool if the exact workflow is unavailable.
- A window records, but a region or full display does not: These are distinct capture workflows. Confirm support for the specific target rather than assuming window capture implies monitor or region capture.
- Your narration or system sound is missing: Check that the intended audio input is included and that the mixer receives a signal. A microphone is needed only if you want to record your voice; it is not required for silent screen capture.
- The application installs, but recording still fails: OBS’s stated requirements are not a guarantee of successful capture on every system. Test the exact session, source, audio, and output workflow on your machine, and consult the distribution-specific installation guidance.
- You are unsure which package to use: Follow the official installation guidance for your distribution instead of assuming one package route fits every Linux system.
