For a live online course on YouTube, use webcam streaming for a straightforward instructor-led session, or an encoder when you need to show slides, share your screen, mix sources, or use external audio or video equipment. Enable live streaming early, schedule the class in YouTube Studio, rehearse with the exact setup you plan to teach with, and check the preview and stream health before selecting Go live.
Choose the right way to stream your class
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder, and console streaming. For a course taught from a computer, the practical choice is usually between webcam and encoder streaming. YouTube describes encoders as useful for screen sharing, external hardware, and more involved production. YouTube’s overview of live streaming explains the available methods.

You do not need to buy expensive equipment just to begin. YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” An external USB microphone or webcam is an optional upgrade if your built-in audio or camera is inadequate, not a requirement. Check eligibility and enable streaming before class day
Do this well ahead of the lesson. According to YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance, your channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. You must also be at least 16 years old to livestream. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so a newly enabled channel may not be ready for a class scheduled that day.

- Verify the channel and enable live streaming before announcing the session.
- Check that the channel has no current live-streaming restrictions.
- Allow time for first-time activation, then confirm you can access the Live Control Room.
Schedule the class in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a stream for the class. Add a clear title and description, and choose the visibility that matches your course plan.
- Copy the event’s watch-page link and share it with students. A scheduled event gives students a page to visit and lets them set reminders.
- If using encoder software, copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into the encoder’s streaming settings.
Treat the stream key like a password: it authorizes software to send a live feed to your channel. Do not share it with students or publish it alongside the watch-page link. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover connecting an encoder to a scheduled stream.
Set up and rehearse the lesson
Rehearse using the same microphone, screen sharing, camera, and movement you expect to use in class. A test with only a still image or a different microphone may not reveal problems that appear during a real lesson. Choose a quality setting that suits your internet connection, test beforehand, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing and checking stream health.

For a webcam lesson
- Confirm that the selected camera and microphone are the devices you intend to use.
- Check that your face is visible and your voice is clear at normal teaching volume.
- If you need to show course material, confirm the webcam workflow supports the presentation you intend to deliver; use an encoder if you need a screen share or a more involved mix.
For an encoder lesson
- Confirm that the encoder is sending the intended screen, camera, and audio sources.
- Check the stream URL and key against the scheduled event, and keep the key private.
- Test transitions between slides and other sources, and speak while moving through the material so you can catch audio or picture issues.
- Start the encoder early enough before class to let YouTube receive the feed and populate the Live Control Room preview.
Have a practical backup plan
Keep lesson materials available locally and decide how you will notify students if a device or connection failure forces a restart. This is a contingency to arrange yourself, not a YouTube recovery guarantee.
Go live and teach
- Start the webcam stream or encoder feed in time to check the incoming picture and sound.
- In the Live Control Room, wait for the preview. Check that the right lesson content is visible and that audio is working.
- Open the event watch page to confirm students can reach the intended stream.
- When the feed is ready, select Go live in the Live Control Room.
- Keep an eye on stream health as you teach. If feasible, ask someone to check the stream from a viewer device so you can catch problems that may not be obvious from the instructor side.
For a class with frequent questions, lower latency can make the conversation feel more immediate. For a lecture where playback stability matters more than instant replies, a less aggressive latency choice may suit the session better. YouTube cautions that “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” DVR lets viewers pause and resume, so tell students whether they can use it during the lesson. End the stream and prepare the replay
- End the stream in the Live Control Room, then stop the encoder feed if you used one.
- Review the archive before sharing it as course material. Check that the audio and video are usable and that its visibility matches your course plan.
- Confirm that the slides, music, clips, and other included material are authorized for both the live broadcast and any replay you make available.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and can be found in the Studio Live area; see its encoder instructions. That does not remove your responsibility to review the replay or choose an appropriate visibility setting.

You are responsible for complying with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and having the rights needed for material included in the livestream and archive. A teaching context does not by itself establish that you have permission to broadcast a song, video clip, image, or other third-party work. Check each item you plan to show or play, including material that may remain in the replay. YouTube’s Terms of Service set out the creator’s responsibilities.
