To add a solid color behind a video, either change the canvas background or place a color layer beneath the footage. If you want to replace the scene behind a person, first remove that background with a chroma key or background-removal tool, then put the color underneath. Canvas color alone does not cut out the original scene.
Choose the right kind of background change
| What you want | Use this workflow | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Fill empty space around a smaller clip or a different aspect ratio | Set the canvas or page background color | Choose the target aspect ratio and decide whether to resize or crop the clip. |
| Add a reusable, full-frame color clip beneath footage | Create a color matte in Adobe Premiere | Match the matte to the sequence and put it on a lower timeline track. |
| Replace the scenery behind a person | Remove the subject’s background with chroma key or another removal tool, then add a color layer beneath | Edge quality, even backdrop lighting, and clothing contrast affect the result. |

Fill the empty canvas around a clip
CapCut desktop
- Import the video and place it on the timeline.
- Resize the clip as needed for the intended canvas. The visible area around the clip is what the background color will fill.
- Select the clip, then open Video > Canvas > Color and choose a color. CapCut also documents Blur and Pattern choices in this control. See CapCut’s canvas instructions; the page describes its desktop workflow, so check the current interface for your version.
This changes the canvas around the video; it does not remove the recorded scene behind a person.
Canva
- Select the page background in the design.
- Choose Background color from the floating toolbar.
- Choose a solid-color tile. Canva also offers gradient tiles.
Canva’s documented control changes the page or design background, not the scene inside an existing video. Canva says adding or changing backgrounds is not available in Canva Docs. See Canva’s background help.

Add a solid color clip in Adobe Premiere
A color matte is a solid-color clip you can layer beneath footage as a background, or use as an overlay or transition. Adobe’s Color Matte page was last updated August 18, 2026.
- In the Project panel, select New Item, then Color Matte.
- Match the matte’s width, height, timebase, and pixel aspect ratio to the sequence.
- Choose the color in the Color Picker and name the matte.
- Place the matte on a video track below the footage it should appear behind. Extend its duration to cover the footage.
If the footage fills the frame, a matte beneath it will not be visible until you resize, crop, mask, or otherwise make part of the foreground transparent. See Adobe’s Color Matte instructions.

Replace the filmed background behind a person
To put a solid color behind a person, the foreground subject must be separated from the original scenery. A green or blue screen is useful when filming specifically for this workflow, but it is not needed to fill empty canvas space or use a color matte. Adobe recommends an evenly lit green or blue screen and clothing that does not match the backdrop color.
Adobe Premiere: Ultra Key
- Place the footage shot against a green or blue background on an upper video track.
- Put a solid color matte or other replacement background on a lower track.
- Apply Ultra Key to the foreground clip and use its eyedropper to sample the background color.
- Refine the result with the Matte Generation and Matte Cleanup controls; adjust Spill Suppression to reduce color cast around the subject.
Adobe’s Ultra Key page, last updated January 7, 2026, describes these controls. A clean key depends on separation between the subject and backdrop, including even backdrop lighting and suitable clothing. See Adobe’s Ultra Key instructions.

Apple iMovie for Mac: Green/Blue Screen
- Put a solid-color or animated background clip in the timeline.
- Place the green-screen or blue-screen clip above it and select the overlay.
- Choose the Green/Blue Screen effect and adjust its controls as needed.
Apple says the color removed is based on the dominant color in the frame at the playhead when Green/Blue Screen is selected. See Apple’s iMovie Mac guide and Apple Support’s Green/Blue Screen instructions.
Check the result before exporting
- Confirm the canvas aspect ratio matches the destination format; otherwise, you may introduce bars or crop important parts of the image.
- For canvas fill, inspect the edges of the clip and confirm the color appears only in the exposed space you intended.
- For a keyed subject, look for missing hair or detail, jagged edges, and green or blue spill. Refine the matte and spill controls rather than expecting a canvas color setting to remove scenery.
- Watch the entire edit, including transitions and the start and end, to confirm the color layer covers the needed duration and stays below the footage.
Common problems and fixes
The color appears around the clip, but the old scene remains behind the person
You changed the canvas, which fills empty space but does not isolate the subject. Use background removal or chroma key first, then put the color layer beneath the isolated foreground.

The color matte is hidden
Check the timeline order: the matte must be below the footage. If the foreground clip is fully opaque and fills the frame, resizing or keying it is also necessary for the matte to show through.
The keyed subject has rough edges or a color halo
Improve separation at capture where possible: light a green or blue backdrop evenly and avoid clothing close to its color. In Premiere, refine Matte Generation and Matte Cleanup, then adjust Spill Suppression.
