OBS Studio is a strong starting choice for streaming 1440p or 4K video to YouTube because it exposes the canvas, output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, scenes, and encoder settings you need to configure and test a high-resolution stream. It is not a universal winner: the right setup depends on your computer and encoder, the video you are sending, and whether your upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate.

For a 4K60 stream, YouTube’s current encoder guide recommends 35 Mbps with AV1 or H.265, or 50 Mbps with H.264. Those are configuration recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality or connection reliability. YouTube’s live encoder settings guide was accessed October 3, 2026.

What to choose for a high-resolution YouTube stream

Start with OBS Studio if you want a documented workflow with separate controls for the source-composition canvas and the stream’s scaled output. Before choosing 1440p or 4K, check that your encoder can handle the codec and frame rate, and that your upload connection can reliably carry YouTube’s recommended bitrate. Raising the output resolution by itself does not ensure a stable or clear stream.

The available official documentation supports OBS as a practical, well-documented option; it does not establish a definitive ranking of OBS against Streamlabs Desktop, vMix, Wirecast, or other streaming applications. Compare any alternative against the same requirements: YouTube ingest compatibility, output controls, encoder options, system load, and the ability to run a representative test.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Match the stream to YouTube’s ingest requirements

YouTube’s live encoder guide, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For audio, it lists AAC or MP3. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission. Check the current guide before going live because platform guidance can change.

Choose the row for your intended output and the codec you will actually send. These are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates, not a promise of picture quality or proof that your connection can sustain the stream.

  1. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the YouTube service or server configuration available in your version, and enter the stream key supplied by YouTube. Treat the key as a password: do not share it or include it in a public screenshot.
  2. Set the canvas and output. Open Settings > Video. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution for the workspace in which you arrange your sources. Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to the resolution you intend to send, such as 2560 × 1440 for 1440p or 3840 × 2160 for 2160p/4K. The canvas is for composition; the scaled output determines the emitted stream size.
  3. Choose the frame rate. In the same Video settings, select the intended frame rate, up to YouTube’s stated 60 fps limit. Sixty frames per second can demand substantially more from the system than 30 fps; the OBS Project warns, “60-fps streaming can be very taxing on your system compared to 30-fps.” If the computer struggles, test 30 fps rather than assuming the higher rate will work.
  4. Choose an encoder and codec. In OBS’s output or streaming settings, choose an encoder and a codec supported by both your OBS build and the YouTube ingest setup. Software encoding such as x264 uses the CPU; available hardware encoders use a dedicated component on supported hardware. Follow YouTube’s codec and HDR guidance when making this choice.
  5. Set video bitrate and keyframes. Use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec from the table above. Set rate control to CBR and keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. Configure audio to AAC or MP3 as supported by your setup.
  6. Build and check the scene. Add the sources your broadcast needs and arrange them on the canvas. A capture card is an optional source when you need to bring in video from an external camera or console; it is not a requirement for every stream.
  7. Run a representative preflight. Test with audio and motion similar to the real broadcast. Check upload speed first, then send a test stream and watch YouTube’s stream health and messages. A speed-test result or a configured bitrate alone cannot establish that the connection will remain stable throughout a live event.

Software encoding or hardware encoding?

Neither route is automatically best. Software encoding can provide a useful quality baseline, while a supported hardware encoder can move work away from the CPU and reduce performance impact. Results depend on the encoder generation and hardware: OBS cautions that earlier hardware encoder generations can produce lower quality than software encoding at the same bitrate using the default veryfast preset. Check the encoder available on your machine and test it at your target output instead of treating “hardware” as a guarantee of better results.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube reports an unstable stream or dropped frames. Confirm that the connection can sustain the configured bitrate, check YouTube’s stream-health messages, and test at a lower output bitrate or frame rate if it cannot. A short upload-speed test is not a guarantee of consistent performance during a broadcast.
  • The output is not actually 1440p or 4K. Check OBS’s Output (Scaled) Resolution, not only the base canvas resolution. The canvas controls source layout; the output resolution controls the stream size.
  • The computer struggles at 60 fps. Compare a representative 30-fps test, review CPU and encoder load, and try a hardware encoder only if your system supports it. Hardware generation and codec support affect the trade-off.
  • The stream does not connect or YouTube rejects its settings. Verify the selected YouTube service/server and stream key in Settings > Stream, then confirm the ingest protocol, codec, keyframe interval, and other settings against YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
  • A 4K stream does not offer the low-latency improvement option. This is expected under YouTube’s current guidance: 4K streams use normal latency.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply

Encoder settings do not grant permission to stream a video, song, or other material. Use content you own or have the necessary rights to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current policies for copyright and monetization eligibility, including its rules on reused content. A technically valid stream can still face a copyright claim or channel-policy consequences.
