First find out whether the audio is consistently ahead of or behind the picture, drifts farther out of sync over time, or is wrong only for one viewer. Those symptoms point to different fixes: adjust a source sync setting for a stable offset, investigate timing for progressive drift, or troubleshoot playback when the problem is device-specific. If the whole broadcast arrives late, that is stream latency—not audio-video sync.

Identify what is out of sync

Compare the voice or game audio with the picture. If they line up but viewers see the event later than it happens, the issue is stream delay: a buffer between the live event and playback. It is separate from correcting audio against video. Twitch explains stream delay and its trade-offs in its guide to adding stream delay.

  • Stable offset: audio is always about the same amount early or late.
  • Increasing drift: audio and picture start close together, then separate more as time passes.
  • Device-specific playback: the stream seems wrong for one viewer, browser, or network, but not others.
  • Uploaded-video mismatch: the local file or YouTube upload has audio and picture out of sync.

Check whether the problem is in the stream or the player

Watch the public stream from another computer or smartphone, as Twitch recommends. Compare it with a local recording or preview if available. This helps distinguish a broadcast problem from a playback problem—and can reveal whether only the OBS monitor sounds wrong.

If just one viewer or device has the issue, try Twitch’s playback checks: refresh or restart the player, open another stream, and test another network. If other streams play normally but one stream does not, broadcaster configuration may be involved. See Twitch playback issue troubleshooting.

Correct a stable audio-video offset in OBS

For a consistent mismatch, delay the element that arrives first. If audio is early, add a Sync Offset to the audio source. If video is early, delay the video source instead. The correct amount depends on the measured mismatch; there is no universal millisecond setting.

  1. To delay audio: in OBS, open Advanced Audio Properties from the audio source controls, then adjust that source’s Sync Offset (ms).
  2. To delay video: add a Render Delay filter to the affected video capture source and set its delay.
  3. Make a short test recording or stream and check it from a viewer’s device. Adjust only as needed, then verify again.

Twitch’s OBS sync guidance describes these controls and recommends checking sync from another device. Avoid changing both audio and video offsets at once: doing so makes it harder to tell which adjustment helped.

When audio drifts farther out of sync

A fixed offset can correct a constant gap, but it will not address a mismatch that grows over time. First determine whether viewers or recordings are also drifting, or whether the issue is limited to what you hear through OBS monitoring. Monitoring can behave differently from stream output in some device-clock arrangements.

An OBS forum discussion started in 2023 describes possible causes including audio-device timing, mismatched audio refresh rates, an underpowered system, and monitoring clocks. These are community-reported possibilities, not a universal diagnosis or a guarantee that one change will fix the problem. See the OBS discussion of sync and drift.

  • If evidence points to persistent, device-related drift, a USB audio interface with reliable device timing may be worth investigating. The cited forum discussion does not test or recommend a particular model, and an interface is not a guaranteed fix.

Fix an out-of-sync YouTube upload

If the problem is in an uploaded video rather than a live broadcast, compare the audio and video track durations in the source project. YouTube Help advises that the track durations should match; if they do not, edit the tracks in video-editing software before uploading again.

To isolate a playback issue, test both the original file and the uploaded video in other browsers. YouTube’s steps are in Troubleshoot audio or video issues with uploads on YouTube.
