For most PC Twitch streamers, OBS Studio is the best place to start: it is free, open source, and offers flexible local recording controls. Streamlabs Desktop is a strong alternative if you want integrated overlays and the ability to record a different set of sources from the ones shown on your live stream. If your gameplay is on a console and you want to capture it on a computer, you may also need a compatible capture card.
There is no established performance winner between the apps here: the available official information does not provide a controlled comparison of system load, recording quality, or setup time. The right choice depends on your capture setup and editing workflow.
Best screen recording software for Twitch streamers
OBS Studio: best overall starting point for PC recording
OBS Studio records locally as well as streaming. Its scenes can combine sources such as game or desktop windows, webcams, images, browser windows, and capture cards. The software is free and open source, and Twitch documents how to set its local recording format, destination, encoder, quality, and audio tracks.
OBS’s official download page lists version 32.2.2, dated August 14, 2026, and lists Windows 10/11, macOS 13 or newer, and Linux. Check the OBS official page for current downloads and requirements.

Streamlabs Desktop: best for an integrated creator interface
Streamlabs Desktop combines local recording with streaming features such as overlays, widgets, and chat integration. Its Selective Recording feature lets you choose sources for the recording separately from those sent to the live broadcast. That is useful if, for example, you want an edited recording without a live-only overlay, or want to include a source in the recording that viewers do not see.

Console gameplay: recording software plus a capture path
If your game runs on a console but you want to record or stream through a computer, a compatible capture card may be part of the setup. Streamlabs documents a PlayStation-to-Twitch workflow using streaming software and a capture card; that does not establish that every console, computer, or resolution works with every card. Check compatibility for your exact console, computer, and target resolution and frame rate before buying hardware. PC gamers capturing gameplay on the same computer do not need a capture card just because they stream on Twitch.

Twitch lists OBS and Streamlabs Desktop among common broadcast applications, but says the supported-app list can change. Check the Creator Dashboard for the current list if supported status is important to your setup. Twitch also lists other apps, some with free and paid licenses; the official list is at Twitch’s recommended broadcasting software page.
Configure local recording in OBS
Twitch’s guide explains the relevant recording controls in OBS. Exact encoder choices depend on the computer and available hardware, so use an encoder your system actually offers rather than assuming every option is available.

- Open OBS settings: go to Settings and then Output. Set the output mode to Advanced when you need separate recording controls or audio tracks.
- Choose the recording destination: under the recording settings, select a folder with enough free disk space. Higher recording quality produces larger files, so monitor available storage, especially for long broadcasts.
- Select a recording format: choose MKV if reducing the chance that a crash ruins the entire recording matters. Twitch recommends MKV for this reason. If you need another format for an editing workflow, check that your editor accepts it and consider converting the file after recording.
- Choose an encoder and quality: select from the encoders available on your computer and set the recording quality you need. The available encoder options vary by system. Higher quality means larger files; there is no universal setting that is best for every PC and use.
- Set audio tracks deliberately: in Advanced output mode, Twitch’s OBS instructions describe using up to four audio tracks. Separate tracks can make it easier to edit game audio, microphone, and other audio independently, but only if you assign the sources to tracks and confirm the tracks are included in the recording.
- Test a short recording: start and stop a brief local recording, then open it in your intended editor or player. Confirm the picture, microphone, game audio, track separation, and destination before relying on the setup for a full broadcast.

Twitch Support describes local recording as a way to preserve a copy of a broadcast and backup of its content; recording locally is still a separate file workflow, so verify that the file was created and is usable.

Keep a copy of the live broadcast
Record the same scenes and audio you send to Twitch, then verify the saved file. This is the simplest arrangement when the recording is primarily a backup or replay of the broadcast.

Make an edited video from the broadcast
Think about whether the recorded copy should match the live view. Streamlabs Selective Recording can omit or add sources relative to the broadcast, which can help produce a cleaner edit. In either app, decide how you want microphone, game audio, and other audio separated before recording; changing that after the fact may not be possible if everything was captured on one track.
Record console gameplay through a computer
Confirm the capture card supports the console and computer you plan to use, as well as your intended resolution and frame rate. Then configure the capture device as a source in your recording software and test both picture and audio. The cited setup guide covers a PlayStation workflow, not every console or card combination.
Copyright and Twitch content rules still apply
Recording software does not grant permission to use music, gameplay footage, or other material. Before broadcasting or publishing a recording, make sure you have the rights or permission needed for the content you include and review Twitch’s current rules. A local copy can preserve material that is later muted, removed, or subject to a claim; keeping a recording is not a substitute for rights clearance.
Common recording problems and fixes
- The recording is missing or cannot be opened after a crash: use MKV as Twitch recommends to reduce the risk of losing the entire file, and test the resulting file in your editor or player before a long session.
- The recording fills the drive: lower the recording quality if appropriate, choose a destination with more free space, and check available capacity before a long broadcast. Higher quality generates larger files.
- Your editor has no separate microphone or game track: enable Advanced output mode, assign sources to the intended tracks, and verify the recorded file’s track layout in a short test.
- A source appears on stream but not in the recording, or vice versa: check the source and scene configuration. If you want different source sets for live and recorded output, use Streamlabs Selective Recording and confirm the selections before going live.
- You cannot select an expected encoder: encoder availability depends on the computer. Choose an available option and test recording quality and stability on your own system.
- Console gameplay does not appear in the software: check the capture-card connection, device compatibility, and source selection. A card is relevant to a console-to-computer capture path, not a requirement for ordinary PC gameplay capture.
