Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“Invalid data found when processing input” does not, by itself, tell you why an FFmpeg stream to YouTube Live failed. FFmpeg documents it as the text for AVERROR_INVALIDDATA; the useful clue is where it appears in the complete log and which input or stream FFmpeg was handling at that moment. Check the failing stage and input before changing YouTube settings, re-encoding media, or replacing hardware.
What the error means—and what it does not
FFmpeg’s version 7.1 error-code documentation, generated August 22, 2025, maps AVERROR_INVALIDDATA to “Invalid data found when processing input.” FFmpeg error-code documentation. That is an error category, not a diagnosis: the wording alone does not identify which input, stream component, or processing stage failed.
It also does not prove that YouTube rejected the stream key or ingest connection. The message concerns invalid data encountered while processing input, but the exact cause in a particular YouTube Live setup cannot be determined without the command and surrounding log.
Find the failure point in the FFmpeg log
Read the messages immediately before and after the first occurrence of the error. Preserve the full command and log; the summary line alone can hide the more useful diagnostic. Identify whether FFmpeg was opening an input, opening a decoder, or processing data later, and note the input or stream named nearby.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Input opening: Check the input URL or device and whether it is accessible and returning the expected kind of data.
- Decoder opening: Look for decoder-specific messages and the stream type FFmpeg selected.
- Later processing: Follow the first failure in sequence; later errors may be consequences rather than the original problem.
These are investigative distinctions, not a ranking of likely causes. The exact cause remains unresolved until the input type, command, FFmpeg build and version, and full log around the first failure are known.
Check the input before changing the YouTube output
If the input is a media file
Use ffprobe to see whether FFmpeg recognizes the file’s format and expected streams before attempting a repair. For example:

ffprobe -hide_banner -i input.mp4
Replace input.mp4 with the actual path. Review whether the output identifies a format and the audio or video streams you expect. A recent FFmpeg Cookbook article recommends this kind of inspection for media files and lists incomplete or damaged data, non-media content, and unsupported or unusual containers as possible file-related causes—not confirmed causes of this YouTube Live error. FFmpeg Cookbook: Invalid data found when processing input.
If the input is a live URL, network stream, or device
Check that the command points to the intended URL or device and that the selected stream is the one you expect. A file-oriented ffprobe check may not work unchanged for a live source: access, protocol, or timing requirements can affect whether it can be probed. Do not treat a failed probe of a live source as proof that the source is corrupt.

Decoder messages matter in streaming workflows too. In a historical FFmpeg-user report from October 30, 2017, an RTSP-to-RTMP workflow showed the same error alongside an H.264 decoder message, sps_id 0 out of range. That establishes one decoder-side context in which the wording appeared; it does not show that the same issue explains a current YouTube Live failure. FFmpeg-user mailing-list report.
Troubleshoot in a safe order
- Save the exact FFmpeg command and complete log. Start with the first occurrence of the error and keep the adjacent messages that name an input, stream, or decoder.
- Classify the input. Record whether it is a local file, live network URL, capture device, or another source. Include the protocol or device details relevant to reproducing the issue.
- Check what FFmpeg can recognize. For a file, inspect it with
ffprobeand compare the detected format and streams with what the command expects. For a live input, account for its access and timing requirements. - Inspect stream selection and decoder diagnostics. Confirm the command is addressing the intended input and stream; read any specific decoder error rather than treating the summary text as the root cause.
- Only then investigate the output and YouTube connection. The title and error string do not establish a stream-key or ingest problem. Avoid changing output settings as a first response when the failing stage has not been identified.
Do not re-encode, attempt a repair, or buy replacement hardware solely because this message appeared. The available evidence does not establish that any one of those actions applies to an unspecified input.

Common misdiagnoses
- Assuming YouTube rejected the stream key: The error text does not identify a stream-key failure. First establish where FFmpeg failed.
- Assuming the source file is damaged: Damage is one possible hypothesis for a file input, not a confirmed explanation—and the input may not be a file at all.
- Assuming every live input can be tested like a file: Live URLs and devices can have access or timing requirements that affect probing.
- Applying a historical decoder fix without matching evidence: The 2017 RTSP/H.264 report is an example of a decoder context, not a universal fix for YouTube Live.
What to include when asking for help
To make the failure diagnosable, provide the FFmpeg command, FFmpeg build or version, input type and protocol, relevant stream details, and the complete log around the first error. Redact stream keys, passwords, private URLs, and other credentials before sharing. Without those details, the message identifies an error category but not the setup-specific cause.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel, rather than diagnose this particular FFmpeg input, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
