Start by testing graphics overlays and capture utilities, then use OBS Safe Mode to isolate plugins and scripts. Check Windows Game DVR next; reduce GPU and scene load only if the evidence points to performance trouble. Make one change at a time and repeat the action that triggered the problem.
First check whether OBS has actually crashed
A crash means OBS closes unexpectedly, stops responding, or displays an error. If the OBS window remains open, the issue may instead be network instability, rendering lag, encoding overload, or a capture source that has gone blank. OBS distinguishes dropped frames caused by network stability or bitrate problems from GPU-related rendering and encoding performance problems; neither symptom by itself proves that OBS crashed. - OBS closes or freezes: Follow the crash-isolation steps below.
- The stream drops frames but OBS stays open: Investigate connection stability and bitrate rather than assuming an application crash.
- The preview or output stutters while OBS stays open: Check rendering and encoding load.
- A capture is black or blank: Troubleshoot the capture source and GPU assignment; that alone is not evidence of a crash.
Before changing anything, note what you were doing when the problem occurred, such as starting a stream, opening a file dialog, or switching scenes. Change one setting or close one category of software at a time, then repeat that trigger. This makes it easier to identify which change matters.
Close graphics overlays and other capture software
OBS documents conflicts with third-party programs that hook graphics functions also used by OBS. Overlays, on-screen displays, and competing recording or capture tools are sensible first suspects—not because they always cause crashes, but because they can interfere with OBS.

- End the stream if needed and save any work in OBS.
- Close overlays and on-screen display utilities, including Discord or other voice-app overlays.
- Close other game-capture, recording, or streaming applications.
- Temporarily close graphics utilities such as MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, or EVGA Precision.
- Reopen OBS and reproduce the same action that caused the crash.
If the problem stops, reopen those programs one by one and test again to narrow down the conflict. OBS specifically notes that D3DGear installs global DirectX hooks, so simply closing it may not be sufficient; its conflict guidance says it must be uninstalled. OBS also associates Dell Backup & Recovery and Alienware Alien Respawn with crashes when OBS opens a Browse dialog. See OBS’s known application conflicts.
Use OBS Safe Mode to isolate extensions
Safe Mode starts OBS without third-party plugins, scripts, and websockets. If OBS behaves normally in Safe Mode, a third-party component is a strong lead to investigate; it does not identify which component is responsible.

- Close OBS.
- Right-click the OBS shortcut and select Properties.
- In the Shortcut tab, append
--safe-modeafter the existing path in the Target field. Keep the executable path in quotation marks if it contains spaces, and put a space before the parameter. - Select Apply, then start OBS with that shortcut and repeat the action that triggered the problem.
- If Safe Mode avoids the crash, restore the shortcut and disable or remove third-party plugins, scripts, or websockets selectively, testing after each change.
To request more detailed OBS logging, the same shortcut method supports the --verbose launch parameter. OBS documents both parameters and the Windows shortcut procedure in its launch parameters guide. Do not treat a more detailed log as a diagnosis by itself.
Check Windows 10 Game DVR and Game Mode
OBS’s Windows gaming-features guidance recommends turning off Game DVR or background captures when troubleshooting conflicts, including problems involving hardware encoding. The Settings label varies across Windows 10 versions:

Win + R, enterwinver, and check your Windows version and build. - Open Settings > Gaming.
- Look for Game DVR or Captures and turn off background recording or capture options.
- Restart OBS and reproduce the issue before making another change.
Do not automatically turn off Game Mode. OBS’s guidance says Windows 10 version 1809 or later can leave Game Mode on; older builds may need it disabled. Its older-build instructions include registry changes, which carry risk if applied incorrectly. Confirm your version with winver and consult the OBS guidance before considering a registry edit rather than applying one as a general fix. The version-specific advice comes from OBS’s Windows gaming-features article, dated 2021; labels and Windows behavior can vary by build. Read Windows Gaming Features Troubleshooting.
Reduce GPU or encoding load only when symptoms point there
If OBS remains open but rendering or encoding struggles—or the crash happens under heavy graphics load—try reducing demand. These are performance troubleshooting steps, not proof that overload caused every OBS crash.

- Run OBS as administrator: Right-click OBS and choose Run as administrator to test whether it gets the GPU resources it needs.
- Reduce competing GPU work: Close GPU-heavy games or applications. Cap a game’s frame rate or enable V-Sync, and lower its graphics settings.
- Lower OBS output demand: Reduce output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is unstable, OBS suggests trying 30 fps.
- Simplify the scene: Temporarily remove or disable nonessential sources, filters, and browser sources, then test again.
Change one item at a time and keep track of the original setting so you can reverse a test that does not help. OBS’s encoding performance guide covers GPU overload and related performance troubleshooting.

On a laptop with multiple GPUs, OBS recommends using the high-power GPU. This may matter when graphics performance or a capture source is the issue, but it is not a universal crash fix. OBS’s display-capture instructions describe a newer compatibility method requiring Windows 10 version 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later; those requirements apply to that display-capture method, not to every OBS installation or crash. Confirm that the computer can handle the workload
OBS lists Windows 10 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its system requirements, while noting that the workload depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Meeting those minimum compatibility requirements does not establish that a particular computer can handle a demanding stream. See OBS System Requirements.
Do not buy a replacement GPU based only on an OBS crash. First use the software-isolation and configuration checks above. A hardware upgrade is worth considering only if diagnosis establishes that the current system cannot handle the workload; a crash by itself does not establish that.
Troubleshoot by symptom and test

If OBS still crashes, gather details for diagnosis
Record the exact OBS error, whether OBS closes or only stops rendering, the action that triggers the problem, the OBS version, the Windows build, the GPU and driver version, and the OBS log or crash report. Include which isolation steps you tried and whether each changed the behavior. Without those details, there is no single general fix that can reliably diagnose an individual machine.
