Test what an API check cannot show: whether people can complete important tasks in the rendered interface, whether the interface is accessible and stable, how it performs for real users, and whether its security controls hold up in a browser. Keep API tests, then add a small, repeatable browser suite plus targeted accessibility, performance, and security checks.
What API tests leave untested
An API test can verify a response, but it cannot establish that a person can find the right control, submit a form, understand an error, or finish a task using the rendered application. Nor does an endpoint check alone tell you whether keyboard focus works, content shifts unexpectedly, or an authenticated browser session exposes a client-side weakness.
Keep API checks for contracts and service behavior. Add other kinds of evidence for other questions: browser tests for user-visible journeys, accessibility review for barriers to use, field metrics for production experience, and authorized security testing for application-specific risks. No single layer proves that the whole product works.
Start with a small set of browser journeys
Choose representative tasks that matter to users and the business, then assert what a user can observe—not private implementation details such as CSS classes or function names. Playwright’s best-practices guidance recommends testing that application code works for end users, using isolated tests and controlled data.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose high-value paths
- Sign in, sign out, and recover an account.
- Search, filter, or navigate to a key item.
- Submit a form and check both success and validation errors.
- Complete a purchase, booking, or other critical transaction, if the application has one.
- Reach a meaningful empty state or recover from a failed action.
Start with a few complete paths rather than attempting to automate every possible combination. For each, define the expected visible result: a confirmation message, a changed status, a destination page, or an accessible error that explains what to fix.
Make tests repeatable
- Give each test its own browser storage and data; seed or reset the records it needs.
- Use a controlled staging environment when production data or changing third-party services would make results unpredictable.
- Prefer user-facing locators such as roles and accessible names. Wait for the expected browser state instead of relying on fixed sleeps or brittle selectors.
- Stub a third-party response when the purpose is to test your application’s behavior, not the external provider.
- Record the browser, viewport, dataset, and environment when they affect reproduction.
Check interaction and visual behavior
Exercise the interface as a person would: use keyboard navigation, move focus through dialogs and menus, trigger validation, and inspect responsive layouts at representative viewport sizes. Include the states that carry user risk—such as an open menu, form errors, loading indicators, and confirmation screens—not just the default page.
Screenshot comparisons can help flag visual changes, but stabilize operating system and browser versions to reduce noise. A difference is a reason to inspect the page, not proof of a user-facing defect; dynamic content and rendering changes can create differences without breaking a task.

A screenshot service can capture a rendered page for a baseline or review workflow, but a captured image does not itself verify navigation, keyboard operation, task completion, or accessibility. For example, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server; use it for captures, not as a substitute for browser assertions or human evaluation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOr skip the browser setup
For a quick rendered-page capture, send one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor would and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Evaluate accessibility with criteria and human review
Use applicable WCAG success criteria as a structured baseline. WCAG 2.1 describes its success criteria as testable statements and applies to content on desktop and mobile devices, among others; it also says the guidelines do not address every user need. Choose a target conformance level based on the product context and relevant policy—an automated check alone cannot establish legal compliance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Combine automated checks with manual review of representative journeys. At minimum, navigate by keyboard, check focus order and visibility, inspect form labels and error handling, and evaluate interactions with the assistive technologies relevant to your users. Scripted checks are useful for repeatable findings, but they cannot adequately judge every interaction or user need.
Measure performance in the field and in controlled runs
Google’s Web Vitals guidance, last updated October 31, 2024, identifies three Core Web Vitals: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) for loading, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) for interactivity, and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) for visual stability. Its documented good-experience thresholds are:

- INP: 200 milliseconds or less.
- CLS: 0.1 or less.
Evaluate the 75th percentile separately for mobile and desktop. These are thresholds in Google’s cited 2024 documentation, not a guarantee for every device or a substitute for checking the current definitions: metric definitions can evolve.
Use controlled browser runs to catch regressions under repeatable conditions, then compare with real-user data to understand production experience. Google points to CrUX and tools including DevTools, PageSpeed Insights, and Search Console for field data; first-party real-user monitoring can provide more detailed per-pageview telemetry. A lab result describes its test conditions, not every production user.

Test security in the application’s real context
Use the OWASP Web Security Testing Guide (WSTG) as a source of scenarios, selecting those that fit your application rather than applying every test indiscriminately. Its domains include configuration and deployment, identity, authentication, authorization, session management, input validation, error handling, cryptography, business logic, client-side behavior, and APIs.

Browser-context checks are especially useful for authenticated workflows, single-page application routes, browser storage, and client-side behavior. OWASP describes its Penetration Testing Kit as working with the live browser session and as complementary to proxies, scanners, and source analysis—not a replacement for them. Run active testing only with authorization and a defined scope, and retain reproducible evidence and impact for any finding.
Match each test to the question it answers
- Endpoint contract: Does the service return the expected response? Use API tests.
- Complete user task: Can someone finish the journey and see the expected result? Use a browser test.
- Accessibility: Does the experience meet applicable criteria and work in representative assistive-technology interactions? Combine automated checks and manual review.
- Production performance: What do users experience across devices? Use field measurements, segmented where relevant.
- Security control: Can an attacker or unintended user bypass a protection in this application’s context? Select authorized, risk-based scenarios.
For each result, preserve evidence appropriate to the question: an assertion and trace for a browser test, criterion-level findings for accessibility, percentile measurements for performance, or reproducible evidence and impact for security. This makes a failure easier to diagnose and helps prevent a green check in one layer from being mistaken for proof in another.
