Both ZIP deployments and container images can package a function’s browser dependencies. AWS describes container images as useful when an application needs more build control or custom runtime configuration; the available documentation does not establish a universal winner for Chromium. Configure memory, timeout, and temporary storage
These are service limits, not recommended Chromium settings. The right configuration depends on HTML complexity, fonts and other assets, PDF size, network activity, and concurrency. Measure representative documents rather than treating the maximum as a target. AWS publishes the limits in its Lambda quotas documentation.

Implement the conversion without assuming an unverified browser recipe
The following is the safe implementation outline, not a copyable Chromium invocation: the AWS sources cited here do not specify a supported Chromium binary, automation library, or Lambda launch flags. Fill in those browser-specific details only after verifying them against your selected runtime, architecture, and library versions.
- Select compatible components. Identify the Lambda runtime and CPU architecture, then validate the browser distribution and automation library against both. Check the library’s current setup requirements and required operating-system dependencies.
- Package the dependencies. Build either a ZIP-based deployment with the required dependencies or a Lambda-compatible container image. For a non-AWS base image, include the Lambda runtime interface client.
- Keep temporary writes in
/tmp. Configure the browser profile, intermediate files, and generated PDF to use this writable location. Set ephemeral storage based on measured temporary usage. - Render the document. Use the verified automation library to load the intended HTML and produce a PDF. Determine how your implementation handles external resources, fonts, and slow or unavailable network requests; those behaviors are browser- and library-specific.
- Deliver the PDF before returning. Return it or upload it to durable storage while the invocation is running. Remove per-invocation files and avoid exposing artifacts from one request to another.
- Test the deployed artifact. Exercise the actual Lambda runtime and architecture with representative documents, output sizes, and failure cases. Tune memory, timeout, and ephemeral storage using those results.
Handle environment reuse safely
Lambda may reuse an execution environment, so initialized objects or cached static assets can reduce repeated setup. Reuse is an optimization, not durable storage: an environment and its /tmp contents may not persist indefinitely. Keep user-specific or sensitive data out of reusable state, clean up temporary artifacts, and ensure one invocation cannot access another invocation’s files.
