Add Open Graph (OG) metadata in your page’s HTML <head>: each page needs og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. In React, you can render <meta> elements from a component, but route-specific previews also depend on the HTML returned for each URL. Make sure that response contains the right tags before relying on a social platform to display them.

Which Open Graph tags does a React page need?

The Open Graph Protocol identifies four required properties: og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. Use values that describe the specific page. The og:url value should be the page’s canonical URL, which the protocol treats as the object’s permanent identifier. Open Graph Protocol

  • og:title: the page title to show in a share preview.
  • og:type: the kind of object, such as website.
  • og:url: the page’s canonical, absolute URL.
  • og:image: an absolute URL to the preview image.

og:description is optional but generally recommended. The protocol also says that if a page specifies og:image, it should specify og:image:alt, a text description of the image. Optional image properties can specify a secure URL, MIME type, pixel width and height. The protocol does not establish current image dimensions, file-size limits or format recommendations for every social platform, so check the target platform’s documentation for those specifics. Add tags to a React component

React documents a built-in <meta> component that can be rendered from any component and placed in the document head. For a static page, or a route whose metadata is rendered into its initial HTML, a small component can hold the tags:

      <meta property="og:description" content="A concise description of this page." />
      <meta property="og:image:alt" content="Description of the preview image" />
    </>
  );
}

Render this component as part of the page or route whose metadata it describes. React’s documented behavior is useful, but verify the production HTML response for the exact URL; seeing a tag after the app runs in a browser is not by itself proof that a social preview consumer will receive it. React’s <meta> reference

Keep titles, descriptions and URLs specific to the page. Use absolute URLs for og:url and og:image. Avoid duplicate tags: the protocol permits repeated values and gives the first value preference when values conflict, so a generic tag in the shell can take precedence over a route-specific tag. Make route-specific metadata available in the HTML response

For a client-rendered React app, the important distinction is between the DOM after JavaScript runs and the HTML the server returns for a route. If every URL initially receives the same generic HTML shell, changing metadata after React starts may not provide page-specific values to a preview consumer. The safe implementation depends on how the app is deployed:

Approach Use it when Trade-off
Static tags in the HTML template One set of site-wide tags is sufficient, or the site is a single page. Simple, but does not provide unique route metadata on its own.
React meta components Your React version and rendering setup put route metadata in the response HTML. Composable; confirm the deployed route response contains the intended values.
Server rendering or framework metadata facilities Routes need distinct values and the stack supports server rendering. Can provide route values in the initial response; the setup varies by framework.
Static HTML generated per route The pages can be generated at build time. Provides per-route HTML without runtime rendering, but requires build and deployment support.
Server-side placeholder replacement A custom server returns an HTML shell and can look up metadata by route. Adapts a client-rendered app, but requires correct lookup and context-appropriate escaping.

For an existing client-rendered app, Create React App’s guide describes two concrete patterns: replace placeholders in the HTML on the server, or pre-build a separate static HTML file for each page. That guide is specific to Create React App, which its documentation marks deprecated; treat it as an example of these techniques, not as the default recommendation for a new React project. Server-side placeholder replacement

A template can mark the attributes the server will fill from route data:

<meta property="og:title" content="__OG_TITLE__" />
<meta property="og:description" content="__OG_DESCRIPTION__" />
<meta property="og:url" content="__OG_URL__" />
<meta property="og:image" content="__OG_IMAGE__" />

When a request arrives, look up metadata for its route, then replace the placeholders before sending the HTML. Escape inserted values for their HTML attribute context; do not concatenate untrusted route data directly into the template. Create React App’s guide explicitly warns to sanitize and escape values. React server rendering

If you use a server-rendered React setup, render the route and its metadata as part of the response. React’s renderToStaticMarkup API can produce an HTML string for a server response, but that output cannot be hydrated. React documents renderToString with hydrateRoot for interactive apps; do not treat renderToStaticMarkup as an automatic replacement for your framework’s rendering pipeline. React: renderToStaticMarkup

Verify the preview metadata for each route

  1. Request the exact public page URL and inspect the returned HTML source or HTTP response—not only the live DOM after the app has run.
  2. Confirm the response includes the four required tags and that each value describes that route.
  3. Check that og:url is the intended canonical URL and that og:image is a publicly reachable, absolute image URL.
  4. Check the optional description and image alt text, and confirm any dynamically inserted attribute values are escaped.
  5. Repeat the check on at least two routes if each should have a different preview. Look for stale generic tags or duplicates.
  6. Use the target social platform’s current preview or debugging tool to check its interpretation and refresh a cached preview if needed. The Open Graph Protocol lists Facebook’s Object Debugger as an implementation tool; platform tools and caching behavior may change. Open Graph Protocol

Troubleshoot incorrect or missing previews

  • The browser shows the right tags, but the preview does not: inspect the route’s original HTTP response. If the values appear only after client-side JavaScript runs, use server rendering, static HTML per route or server-side replacement so they are present in the returned HTML.
  • Every route shares the same title or image: check whether the server serves one generic shell or a generic tag appears before a route-specific tag. Generate or substitute metadata per route and remove conflicting duplicates.
  • The preview has the wrong canonical URL: compare og:url in the response with the intended canonical address. Update the route’s metadata source if it points to the shell URL or another page.
  • The image is absent: confirm the og:image value is an absolute URL and publicly reachable. The protocol defines the field as an image URL; any additional platform-specific image requirements need to be checked with that platform.
  • Inserted metadata breaks the markup: escape dynamic values for their HTML attribute context before substitution. Sanitizing alone does not replace context-appropriate escaping.
  • A preview remains stale after a change: check the target platform’s current debugger or preview tool and refresh its cached interpretation if the tool supports it.

Or skip the browser setup

If you also need a screenshot of a page or a captured PDF while checking a rendered route, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is separate from setting Open Graph tags: use the response HTML checks above to verify metadata. A single GET request can capture a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF.
