For a quick, public, timestamped reference, submit the exact page URL to the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine using Save Page Now. Open the returned archive link and check that it contains what you need. For important material, also keep a separate local copy: one hosted snapshot is not a full-site backup or a guarantee that every part of a page was preserved.
Save a page with the Wayback Machine
- Copy the full URL of the page you want to preserve. Use the specific article or page address, not just the site’s home page.
- Open Save Page Now, enter the URL, and submit it. Internet Archive describes the feature as saving one page and returning a permanent URL; its help page says the capture includes the page’s images and CSS, but not outlinks or a full-site crawl. Internet Archive Help Center.
- When the capture finishes, save the archived URL it provides. That URL identifies the snapshot and its capture time.
- Open the archived URL and inspect the material that matters: text, images, links, and any interactive elements. Do not assume that a successful submission means every resource was captured.
Save Page Now is useful for creating a hosted reference to one page at a particular moment. It does not continuously track that page, preserve future versions, or automatically capture every page linked from it.
Make a local copy of anything important
A hosted archive and a local copy serve different purposes. A Wayback snapshot is convenient to share and cite; a local file is under your control, but you must store and manage it. For material you cannot afford to lose, keep both where permitted by copyright.
- Download the page or an attached document if you need the original file.
- Save or export the relevant text when the words are what matter.
- Take screenshots when visual appearance is important; keep a transcript as well if text search or accessibility matters.
- For complex pages, record what did not survive in the archive rather than treating the snapshot as complete.

When deciding, weigh whether the copy must be publicly shareable, whether you need local control, how complete the capture must be, how many pages are involved, and how often you need to repeat the process.
Check what the archive actually saved
Archived pages can be incomplete. Crawlers may be blocked by access controls, technical or security settings, or a site owner’s exclusion request. Dynamic JavaScript, server-dependent features, missing images, and pages that are not discoverable through links can also cause problems. Internet Archive and the preservation guidance from Aarhus University and the Digital Preservation Coalition describe these kinds of limitations.

- Read the page’s main text in the archived copy.
- Open important images and linked resources separately; a page capture does not promise that all of them were captured at the same time.
- Check the date in the archived URL. Navigation in an incomplete archive may lead to a nearby capture or even the live web, so verify that a resource is from the intended snapshot.
- If an essential item is absent, preserve it separately where permitted and note the omission.
A previously saved page may later become unavailable under archive policies, according to Aarhus University’s tutorial. Treat a hosted snapshot as useful preservation, not a guarantee of everyday or perpetual availability.
Cite the original and archived versions
When citing a saved page, keep both the original URL and the archived URL. Identify the archived capture and its timestamp so readers can distinguish the snapshot from the current page. The Digital Preservation Coalition recommends placing archived links alongside original links, while Internet Archive advises citing the page normally and then providing Wayback information: DPC quick guide and Internet Archive Help Center.

For legal or evidentiary use, do not assume an ordinary Wayback snapshot is authenticated evidence. Internet Archive says the service was not expressly designed for legal use and directs users to its affidavit procedure; consult its guidance for the relevant requirements: Internet Archive Help Center.
