Use a browser test to put the React interface into a specific interactive state, set a representative viewport, and compare a screenshot with a reviewed baseline. With Playwright Test, that comparison is expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). The interaction establishes what the test captures; the screenshot checks appearance, not whether the control works or whether the page is accessible.
What a screenshot test should verify
A useful visual regression test has three distinct parts:
- State setup: navigate to the page or component harness and trigger the interaction you want to protect, such as opening a menu or selecting a tab.
- Behavior checks: assert that the interaction produced the expected result. A screenshot alone cannot establish that a control works.
- Visual comparison: capture the relevant area at a chosen viewport and compare it with an expected image.
Keep these checks conceptually separate. Pair visual assertions with behavioral and accessibility checks where those properties matter. Playwright’s screenshot guidance distinguishes visual screenshots from accessibility snapshots: screenshots help inspect layout and rendered output, while accessibility snapshots help inspect structure and support interaction.
Set up Playwright Test in your React project
Playwright’s visual-comparison workflow applies to a React app running in a browser. The application-specific part—starting the app, choosing a test route or component harness, and identifying reliable controls—is yours to provide. The example below assumes the app is already available at http://127.0.0.1:4173 and has a test page at /visual/menu with a button named “Open menu” and a menu with the accessible role menu. Replace those with your app’s URL and accessible labels.

Install Playwright Test if it is not already a project dependency, then install the browser binaries for the browsers you intend to test. Keep the installed Playwright version consistent between local development and CI; check that version’s documentation for exact option availability.
Configure a local web server
For a Vite project, a minimal configuration can start the production preview server before tests. Adjust the command and port to match your app:
// playwright.config.ts
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
testDir: './tests',
use: {
baseURL: 'http://127.0.0.1:4173',
browserName: 'chromium',
},
webServer: {
command: 'npm run build && npm run preview -- --host 127.0.0.1 --port 4173',
url: 'http://127.0.0.1:4173',
reuseExistingServer: !process.env.CI,
},
});
If your project uses a different framework or server, replace the command and readiness URL. The web server configuration is only one way to make the app available; it does not configure a React component harness for you.

Write a test for an interactive state at multiple viewports
This example opens a menu, checks that it is visible, and captures the menu element at two explicit viewport widths. It assumes the menu remains discoverable through the accessible role after it opens. If your component uses different semantics, update the locators to match the actual interface.
// tests/menu-visual.spec.ts
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('open menu matches its visual baseline at supported widths', async ({ page }) => {
for (const viewport of [
{ width: 390, height: 844 },
{ width: 1280, height: 800 },
]) {
await page.setViewportSize(viewport);
await page.goto('/visual/menu');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Open menu' }).click();
const menu = page.getByRole('menu');
await expect(menu).toBeVisible();
await expect(menu).toHaveScreenshot(`open-menu-${viewport.width}.png`);
}
});
The widths above are illustrative test inputs, not a universal device matrix. Choose widths that cover your product’s supported layouts and any point where the component’s arrangement or interaction changes. If the test depends on touch behavior, browser context, or other device characteristics—not just width—consider a named device profile. Playwright supports device emulation and viewport overrides.
On the first run, Playwright creates reference images for the screenshot assertions. Review those images before accepting them as the expected appearance. Later runs compare new captures with those references. When the UI intentionally changes, inspect the diff and update the snapshot only after deciding that the new rendering is correct; commit and review the resulting baseline files.

Choose the screenshot scope that matches the risk
Element screenshot
expect(locator).toHaveScreenshot() captures the selected element. Use it when the question is whether a component—such as an opened menu, validation message, or selected tab—looks right independently of most surrounding page content. It keeps the comparison focused, but it will not detect problems elsewhere on the page.
Viewport screenshot
expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() captures the visible browser window by default. Use it when the component’s surrounding layout, spacing, or overlap is part of the visual risk. A viewport screenshot does not include content below the visible window unless full-page capture is enabled.
Full-page screenshot
Pass { fullPage: true } to a page screenshot assertion when below-the-fold rendering is part of the check:

await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('menu-page.png', { fullPage: true });
Full-page capture answers a different question from an element or viewport capture. Use it when the page’s longer layout matters; do not treat it as a substitute for a focused component check when the component’s state is the concern.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make comparisons stable without hiding defects
Run baseline and comparison in a consistent environment
Rendered screenshots can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment where possible, especially in CI. If local and CI renderings differ, first compare their browser versions and execution environments instead of immediately loosening the comparison.
Wait for the state you intend to capture
Drive the interface into its target state with browser interactions and assert that state before taking the screenshot. For asynchronous content, wait for a meaningful condition—such as a visible element or completed loading indicator—rather than relying on an arbitrary delay alone. A screenshot assertion retries while waiting for consecutive captures to match, but it cannot make an unstable or incorrectly prepared application state meaningful.

Handle irrelevant dynamic content deliberately
When a genuinely volatile element is unrelated to the visual behavior under test, Playwright screenshot assertions support a stylesheet option to hide or alter content during capture. Use that only for irrelevant volatility. Hiding a changing area that could contain a real layout or rendering defect weakens the test rather than stabilizing it.
Set tolerance based on reviewed diffs
Playwright exposes options for pixel differences, differing-pixel ratios, and color thresholds. A stricter comparison can flag small rendering changes; a more permissive comparison can avoid noise but may also let meaningful regressions through. There is no universally correct threshold in the documented workflow. Start by inspecting actual failures in your stable environment, then set and document only the allowance your team can justify. Check the installed Playwright version for the exact option names and behavior you plan to use.
Why screenshot tests fail in CI but pass locally
- Different rendering environment: host OS, browser build, browser settings, hardware, power conditions, or headless mode can affect pixels. Align the environments or maintain baselines for the environment that runs the comparison.
- The test captured the wrong state: a click may not have opened the intended control, or the page may still be loading. Assert the relevant visible state before comparing.
- Unrelated content changed: timestamps, rotating content, or other volatility may differ between captures. Stabilize test data or use a narrowly targeted capture stylesheet only when that content is genuinely outside the test’s purpose.
- The baseline was updated without review: snapshot updates change what the test considers correct. Inspect the image diff and review the changed snapshot before accepting it.
- The chosen scope is too broad or too narrow: a page capture can fail because of unrelated content, while an element capture can miss layout problems outside that element. Select the scope based on the risk being tested.
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot of a URL that already renders the state you want, ScreenshotNeo can return an image with one GET request. This captures the page as served; it does not click a React control or replace the interaction setup in the Playwright test above. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each removal step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Those are API capture features, not a visual-regression baseline workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot assertion test whether a React component is accessible?
No. A screenshot records rendered appearance; use separate accessibility checks for accessible structure and interaction.
Can I use a full-page screenshot to test a menu’s opened state?
Yes, if the page is in that state when captured, but an element capture is usually more focused when the menu itself is the visual target.
