In Zoom, computer (local) recording saves files to your computer, while cloud recording stores them in Zoom’s cloud for access through the web portal. ISO recording is different: in production workflows such as ZoomISO, it means routing individual participant feeds to separate outputs. The term “ISO” is not used consistently across platforms, so this comparison uses Zoom for its documented computer and cloud recording options and ZoomISO as a specific production example.

What the terms mean

Computer or local recording

Zoom’s computer recording saves recording files directly to the computer’s hard disk, normally in a Zoom folder inside Documents. “Local recording” is a familiar shorthand for this option. Zoom lists standard outputs including MP4 video, M4A audio and chat text. Zoom Support: Getting started with computer and cloud recording.

Cloud recording

Zoom cloud recording stores meeting video, audio and chat text in Zoom’s cloud. After processing, recordings appear in the Recording area of the Zoom web portal, where they can be viewed, managed, shared or downloaded. Cloud recording is a storage and access choice; it does not automatically mean that every participant has an isolated video file. Zoom Support.

ISO recording

In production, “ISO” commonly refers to isolated sources or feeds. In the documented ZoomISO workflow, individual participant feeds can be assigned to separate production outputs. That is a routing workflow for production, not simply a conventional meeting recording saved to cloud storage. ZoomISO’s v3.0.1 documentation describes capture permissions and recording and live-stream capture modes; its recording capture mode does not itself record the call inside ZoomISO. Liminal: ZoomISO v3 Documentation.

How the options compare

Question Zoom computer/local recording Zoom cloud recording ZoomISO-style production workflow
Where does the media go? To the computer’s hard disk. To Zoom’s cloud and the web portal. Participant feeds are routed to production outputs; this is not described as an ordinary cloud archive.
What is it for? Keeping recording files directly on the computer. Centralized portal access, sharing, playback or download after processing. Isolated participant feeds for post-production or live production.
What can it produce? Standard MP4 video, M4A audio and chat text. Configured video layouts, audio files and chat text; see settings below. Separate outputs for individual participant feeds, depending on the workflow.
What setup matters? Computer recording is available with all Zoom accounts, subject to settings and device support. A licensed user on an eligible Pro, Business or Enterprise account, with cloud recording enabled. Appropriate capture permissions and the chosen tool’s recording or live-stream workflow.
Deciding question Do you need files saved directly on this computer? Do you need eligible hosted recording and later portal access? Do you need isolated participant feeds for production?

Can Zoom cloud recording save separate tracks?

Yes, with an important distinction between separate audio files and isolated video feeds. Zoom’s cloud recording settings can save selected video layouts separately, such as active-speaker, gallery and shared-screen layouts. They can also save one audio file containing all participants, one separate audio file per participant, or both. These are configurable options, not guaranteed defaults. Zoom says separate participant audio files can be provided for up to 200 speakers; phone participants’ audio is combined in one file. Zoom Support: Changing basic and advanced cloud recording settings.

Those settings do not establish that cloud recording creates a separate isolated video file for every participant. If an editor or live production needs participant video feeds isolated from one another, confirm that the specific ISO tool and workflow actually captures and routes what the production requires.

What to check before relying on Zoom cloud recording

  • Account and feature eligibility: Zoom documents cloud recording for licensed users on Pro, Business or Enterprise accounts when cloud recording is enabled. Check the live account settings before scheduling around it.
  • Who can start it: Zoom says only hosts and co-hosts can start a cloud recording.
  • Processing time: A recording must process after it is stopped before it can be viewed. Zoom says processing generally takes about twice the recorded duration and can occasionally take up to 24 hours under higher processing loads.
  • What is not captured: Zoom documents that cloud recording does not capture nonverbal feedback or meeting reactions.
  • Embedding and file limits: Zoom says cloud recordings cannot be embedded on websites, and one live session has a 150-file limit across generated layouts and related files.

These requirements and behaviors are documented by Zoom in its Starting a cloud recording help page; account features and settings can change, so verify them in your account when they are consequential.

Which option should you choose?

  • Choose computer/local recording when your main need is to save files directly on the computer.
  • Choose cloud recording when your account is eligible and you want recordings accessible through Zoom’s portal for playback, sharing or download.
  • Investigate an ISO-capable production workflow when the requirement is isolated participant feeds for editing or live production. Confirm capture permissions, participant notices and exactly what outputs the tool records; do not assume a cloud-recording setting provides those isolated feeds.
