To capture a screenshot with Java and Selenium, load the page in a WebDriver session and call getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE). That captures the current browsing context—typically the visible browser viewport—not necessarily the entire page. For a full-page image, Selenium documents a separate API for Firefox: FirefoxDriver.getFullPageScreenshotAs.

Capture the current browser view

Selenium describes a WebDriver screenshot as a capture of the current browsing context. The returned image represents rendered browser output, not the page’s source HTML. The official Java example uses ChromeDriver, gets the screenshot as a file, and copies it to a named path. Selenium: Take screenshot

This complete example opens a URL, saves the current view as a PNG, and closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails:

import java.io.File;
import java.nio.file.Files;
import java.nio.file.Path;
import java.nio.file.StandardCopyOption;

import org.openqa.selenium.OutputType;
import org.openqa.selenium.TakesScreenshot;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeDriver;

public class ScreenshotExample {
    public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
        WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver();
        try {
            driver.get("https://example.com");

            File screenshot = ((TakesScreenshot) driver)
                    .getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE);
            Path target = Path.of("screenshot.png");
            Files.copy(screenshot.toPath(), target,
                    StandardCopyOption.REPLACE_EXISTING);

            System.out.println("Saved screenshot to " + target.toAbsolutePath());
        } finally {
            driver.quit();
        }
    }
}

The example assumes a Java project with Selenium and a working Chrome/ChromeDriver setup. Selenium’s documentation example uses Apache Commons IO’s FileUtils to copy the temporary screenshot file; the copy utility is a separate dependency, not part of Selenium. This version uses Java NIO instead.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Save as bytes or Base64

If the next step is uploading the image, storing it in a database, or sending it over a service, choose the return type that fits the workflow. Selenium’s Java API provides file, byte-array, and Base64 output forms. Selenium Java API: OutputType

byte[] pngBytes = ((TakesScreenshot) driver)
        .getScreenshotAs(OutputType.BYTES);

String base64 = ((TakesScreenshot) driver)
        .getScreenshotAs(OutputType.BASE64);

Capture a full page in Firefox

A normal WebDriver screenshot is not the same as a full-page capture. Selenium’s Firefox documentation shows getFullPageScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE), which captures the full page in the documented Firefox workflow. Support is driver-specific; the available documentation does not establish that this method works identically across all browsers or remote sessions. Check the API for the concrete driver and Selenium setup you use. Selenium: Firefox browser FirefoxDriver Java API

public class FirefoxFullPageScreenshot {
    public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
        FirefoxDriver driver = new FirefoxDriver();
        try {
            driver.get("https://www.selenium.dev");

            File screenshot = driver.getFullPageScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE);
            Path target = Path.of("full_page_screenshot.png");

        } finally {
            driver.quit();
        }
    }
}

The file returned by Selenium is temporary, so move or copy it to the destination while it is still available. If the target filename already exists, use Files.copy with StandardCopyOption.REPLACE_EXISTING or choose a new filename.

Capture an element instead of the page

When you need only a component—such as a chart, card, or banner—Selenium supports taking a screenshot of a WebElement. Locate the element after the page has loaded, then request its screenshot. This produces an image of the element rather than the whole browsing context. Selenium screenshot documentation

Choose the right screenshot method

Need Method Important distinction
Visible browser view ((TakesScreenshot) driver).getScreenshotAs(...) Captures the current browsing context; it is not automatically a full-page image.
Entire page FirefoxDriver.getFullPageScreenshotAs(...) Use where the concrete driver exposes and supports this API; do not assume identical cross-browser support.
One component WebElement.getScreenshotAs(...) Targets the selected element rather than the page.
Different downstream handling OutputType.FILE, BYTES, or BASE64 Choose a file for convenient local saving, bytes for binary processing, or Base64 for text-oriented transport.

Common problems and fixes

  • The image shows only the viewport. The ordinary WebDriver screenshot captures the current browsing context. Use the full-page API only with a driver that documents it, or capture a specific element if that is the actual target.
  • The screenshot file disappears or cannot be found later. The returned file may be temporary. Copy or move it to a durable destination immediately after capture.
  • The screenshot is blank or shows an incomplete page. Confirm navigation completed and the expected content is rendered before capturing. For dynamic sites, wait for the relevant element or state in your Selenium workflow; the screenshot methods themselves do not guarantee that asynchronous content has finished loading.
  • ClassCastException when casting the driver. Ensure the concrete WebDriver implements TakesScreenshot before using that interface. Driver capabilities vary; consult the driver’s API rather than assuming support.
  • The Firefox full-page call is unavailable. The documented full-page API is associated with FirefoxDriver and HasFullPageScreenshot. Check your Selenium version and the concrete driver API; do not substitute the ordinary screenshot call and expect a full-page result.
  • Browser startup fails before capture. The sample requires the browser and driver setup appropriate to your environment. Resolve browser installation, driver management, or session configuration errors before troubleshooting screenshot output.

Or skip the browser setup

If you want a screenshot without managing a Selenium browser session, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF. Its API accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Selenium save a screenshot as HTML?

No. Selenium captures the rendered browser output as an image; it does not export the page’s HTML source.

Can I use a screenshot returned as Base64 in Java?

Yes. Request OutputType.BASE64 when a Base64 string suits the next step in your workflow.
