For a PDF, Mozilla documents an interactive workflow: open the page in Firefox, choose Print…, select Save to PDF, and save it. Firefox’s separate --screenshot option creates an image, not a PDF.
Can Firefox headless save a webpage as a PDF?
Not through a PDF-printing command documented in Mozilla’s current command-line reference. That reference describes --headless as running Firefox without a GUI and lists --screenshot [path] for saving a screenshot; it does not list a PDF-export parameter. See Mozilla’s Firefox command-line options.
Headless mode alone does not turn browser printing into PDF export. Nor is --screenshot a substitute when the required output is a paginated PDF: it saves a screenshot image. The reference notes that command-line parameters can depend on the build and platform, so check firefox --help on the machine you use for options available in that installation.
Mozilla Bugzilla issue 1407238 records a request for a command-line option to print a page or generate a PDF in headless mode. It is historical context, not confirmation of the feature’s status in every later Firefox build.

Save a webpage as a PDF in Firefox
- Open the webpage in Firefox.
- Open the menu and choose Print….
- In the print preview, choose Save to PDF from the destination dropdown.
- Set the page and appearance options you need, then click Print and choose where to save the PDF.
This is Mozilla’s documented print-preview workflow; it is not a headless procedure. The available controls include orientation, page selection, paper size, scale, pages per sheet, margins, headers and footers, and background printing. Check layout before saving
Use the preview to check page breaks, clipped content, and missing elements. Websites can apply different styles for print, so the PDF may not look exactly like the page on screen. Changing the paper size, scale, margins, orientation, or page range can alter pagination. Background printing controls whether page backgrounds appear; it is unavailable when the simplified print format is selected.

Use simplified output when available
Firefox’s Simplified print format can remove clutter such as buttons, ads, and background images. It is available only when the page supports a simplified version and Reader View has not already been enabled. A page with Reader View can also be opened in that view before printing. Mozilla describes these options in its guidance on printing simplified webpages.

Troubleshooting
- You expected a PDF from
--headless. Headless means Firefox runs without a GUI; it does not itself specify a PDF export. Use Print preview → Save to PDF for Mozilla’s documented workflow. - You tried
--screenshotand got an image. That option saves a screenshot, not a paginated PDF. Use the print workflow when a PDF is required. - The PDF differs from the screen. Check the print preview. Print-specific styles can change a page’s appearance; review scale, paper size, margins, orientation, and background settings.
- Simplified format is unavailable. The page may not provide a simplified version, or Reader View may already be enabled. Try printing the page in its regular view or use Reader View where offered.
- A command-line option is unavailable on your machine. Mozilla notes that options depend on build and platform. Run
firefox --helplocally and consult the current command-line reference rather than assuming another installation supports the same parameters.
