You can raise money with a YouTube Live event by adding an eligible YouTube Giving fundraiser to a scheduled stream, or—if your channel cannot use YouTube Giving—by directing viewers to a clearly identified external campaign. Choose an event people can take part in, make the donation route easy to understand, and explain exactly how the money will reach the cause.

Virtual fundraiser ideas that fit YouTube Live

These are formats to consider, not ranked methods: YouTube does not publish comparative results showing which kind of fundraiser raises the most.

  • Creator collaboration: Invite creators or community partners to join one event. If the feature is available to your channel, a YouTube community fundraiser can let participating creators support the same cause.
  • Live performance or demonstration: Build the program around original music, art, cooking, crafts, or another skill. Use your own work or material you have permission to use; another creator’s work can trigger a copyright claim.
  • Expert conversation and audience Q&A: Invite a nonprofit representative, beneficiary advocate, or subject expert. Gather questions in chat, and explain the cause and donation route in the description and aloud during the stream.
  • Timed community challenge: Set a clear activity, goal, and duration, then let viewers follow progress. Only mention a matching gift if it has actually been secured.
  • Creator revenue pledge: You can pledge revenue generated by your own original video to a named nonprofit. Explain how you will calculate and document the amount; do not ask viewers to click ads or replay videos to increase it.

Choose how viewers will donate

Route Who can use it and what viewers do Important trade-off
YouTube Giving Donate button or Live Chat Donations Available when both the channel and selected nonprofit meet YouTube’s requirements. Viewers donate through YouTube’s interface. Convenient on-platform route, but eligibility and country availability apply. Live Chat Donations replace Super Chat for Good; Super Chat and Super Stickers are unavailable on donation livestreams to avoid confusion. YouTube Giving FAQs
External fundraiser link If YouTube Giving is unavailable, link to a campaign page such as GoFundMe or JustGiving from an end screen. Viewers leave YouTube. Check the URL and confirm the provider’s geography, payment, and fee terms directly. YouTube fundraising guidance
YouTube Nonprofit Program Link Anywhere card For eligible YouTube Nonprofit Program partners, a card can link to an external campaign landing page. Confirm that your organization and destination qualify. YouTube Nonprofit Program overview
Creator revenue pledge The creator makes original content and pledges its revenue to a named nonprofit. Requires a clear, truthful explanation of the pledge and how the amount will be determined. YouTube does not verify a creator’s separate pledge.

Check YouTube Giving eligibility before you promote

YouTube’s published channel criteria include availability in your location, at least 10,000 subscribers, membership in the YouTube Partner Program, and a channel that is not designated Made for Kids. The nonprofit you select must also meet YouTube’s charity and platform requirements. Check the current location and organization lists before announcing an on-platform donation option; eligibility can vary. See YouTube Giving FAQs.

Set up the donation route and stream

  1. Confirm the cause and route. Verify the nonprofit and your channel’s eligibility. If you will use an external campaign instead, confirm that the page is genuine and that the provider supports your intended audience.
  2. Create the fundraiser in YouTube Studio. Go to Earn → Giving, create a fundraiser, select an available nonprofit, add the details and any collaborators, and optionally set a goal and duration. Add the relevant video or scheduled livestream, then publish. The exact options depend on eligibility. Follow Google for Nonprofits’ fundraiser setup steps.
  3. Plan the live format. YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder livestreaming. Equipment depends on your choice: the computer-webcam route needs a webcam; an encoder workflow may use a microphone and camera. None is a fundraising prerequisite by itself. See YouTube’s live-streaming guide.
  4. Decide whether to enable live chat. With chat on, viewers can use Live Chat Donations when the fundraiser is active. Members-only live chat with the donate button is not supported. Super Chat and Super Stickers are disabled on donation livestreams, while ads are not affected. Super Thanks is unavailable on videos with donations. Confirm the current behavior in YouTube’s Giving FAQs.
  5. Check how the donate control appears on mobile. YouTube says mobile viewers need portrait orientation to see live chat. When chat is enabled, the Donate control appears in chat; without chat, a Donate button can appear next to or below the stream. After the fundraiser start date, the button surfaces on the watch page or in live chat. Google for Nonprofits explains the timing.
  6. Make the donation instructions unmistakable. State the receiving organization, whether viewers donate through YouTube or an external provider, and any creator pledge. If you use a creator pledge, do not imply that YouTube verifies it.
  7. Test the event details before going live. Check the scheduled stream, fundraiser details, description, selected nonprofit, and donation link. If using an external campaign, open the link yourself and verify that it reaches the intended page.

What happens to donations made through YouTube Giving?

YouTube says 100% of a contribution goes to the eligible nonprofit and YouTube pays transaction fees. Google uses Network for Good to collect and distribute donations; YouTube also notes that Network for Good has legal control of donations once collected. These statements apply to eligible YouTube Giving donations, not to payments made through an external fundraiser or a creator’s separate revenue pledge. See YouTube’s donation guidance and YouTube Giving FAQs.

Common problems and what to check

  • The fundraiser option is missing: Recheck your channel location, subscriber count, YouTube Partner Program status, Made for Kids designation, and whether the nonprofit is available. YouTube Giving is not available to every channel or charity.
  • Viewers cannot find the Donate button: Confirm the fundraiser has started and is attached to the scheduled livestream. On mobile, viewers need portrait orientation to see live chat; if chat is off, look for the button next to or below the stream.
  • Viewers expect Super Chat or Super Stickers: These are unavailable on donation livestreams because Live Chat Donations take their place. Explain the change before the event if your audience expects those features.
  • An external link is not usable: Check that it points to the intended campaign and confirm the destination provider’s current regional availability, payment options, and fees. YouTube’s end-screen suggestion does not guarantee that an external service supports every viewer.
  • Stream content triggers a copyright concern: Use original material or obtain the necessary permissions. YouTube warns that using another creator’s work may result in a copyright claim.
  • A revenue pledge could be misunderstood: Say what revenue is included, how you will calculate it, and when you expect to report the amount. Never ask viewers to click ads or repeatedly watch videos to increase a donation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your fundraiser includes prerecorded programming that should keep playing on YouTube, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube. Learn more at StreamNeo, then start your free day.
