To render a local HTML file, run wkhtmltoimage index.html page.png. To render a web page, use wkhtmltoimage https://example.com page.png. The command’s final argument is the image file to write.
Render a local HTML file or a URL
The documented command syntax is wkhtmltoimage [OPTIONS]... <input file> <output file>. The input can be a local HTML file or a page available at a URL; the output filename determines where the image is saved.

Adjust width, crop, and rendering time
The Debian manual documents options for setting a rendering width, cropping, zooming, JavaScript execution, and waiting before capture. The appropriate settings depend on the page; check the resulting image in the environment where you plan to use it.

For example, this command sets a width guideline and waits 1,000 milliseconds:
wkhtmltoimage --width 1280 --javascript-delay 1000 https://example.com page.pngUse your page’s actual ready condition and desired dimensions rather than treating those example values as universal settings. A fixed delay may be too short for a slow page or unnecessarily long for a fast one.

Allow local assets when rendering a file
A local HTML page may refer to images, stylesheets, fonts, or other files stored beside it. The manual documents --allow <path> to grant access to local files in a specified folder. --disable-local-file-access blocks access to other local files unless they are allowed.
wkhtmltoimage --allow ./assets index.html page.pngIf local resources are missing, check the paths in the HTML and whether the required directory is permitted. Avoid granting access more broadly than the rendering task requires.

Know the maintenance trade-off
wkhtmltoimage renders with Qt WebKit. Its upstream GitHub repository has been archived and made read-only since January 2, 2023. That makes it a legacy choice: before adopting it for a new workflow, verify that the specific binary available in your environment renders your pages as required. The available documentation here does not establish a current version number or supported operating-system matrix. Archived upstream repository
Troubleshoot common rendering problems
- The command is not found: the executable is unavailable on your command path or is not installed. Confirm that your environment has a usable wkhtmltoimage binary; this guide does not establish installation steps or current platform coverage.
- The output is missing styles or images: verify that resource URLs resolve from the HTML page. For local assets, check file paths and grant the necessary folder with
--allowif local-file restrictions prevent access. - The page appears before its scripts finish: keep JavaScript enabled if the page needs it, then use
--javascript-delayor wait for a page-specific value with--window-status. - The dimensions are unexpected: adjust
--width, and use--disable-smart-widthif strict width is needed. Use the crop options when the desired result is a specific region rather than the full rendered area. - The output differs across environments: wkhtmltoimage relies on Qt WebKit, and the exact binary and page resources matter. Inspect the generated image in the target environment instead of assuming identical results across setups.
