To show a visual preview of an external blogroll link, use a screenshot tool or a WordPress links-gallery plugin that captures the destination page. If a destination provides a suitable Open Graph image, a link-card plugin can use that instead. WordPress featured images and Site Icons serve different purposes: they display images you select for your own content or identify a site, but they do not capture a remote webpage.
Choose the kind of thumbnail you need
First decide whether readers need to see the destination page itself or simply recognize the site. The right method depends on what the thumbnail should show and how you want it updated.

For a blogroll meant to show what each linked site looks like, choose a screenshot route. If a logo or representative image is enough, a metadata-based card or a hand-picked image can be simpler.

It also documents a full_page=true option. Treat this as a service-dependent setup: check the plugin’s current compatibility with your WordPress version and the service’s current account terms before installing or relying on it.
WP Links Page
WP Links Page describes a links gallery that automatically creates screenshots for links. Its listed options include grid or list layouts, titles and descriptions, scheduled or on-demand screenshot updates, and shortcode output. This may suit a blogroll you want to manage as a gallery rather than assembling from individual images. Check its maintenance and compatibility before choosing it.
Use destination-provided images instead of screenshots
Simple Link Embed fetches metadata for a selected URL and can use that page’s Open Graph image and favicon. This avoids capturing a fresh rendering, but the result depends on metadata supplied by the external site. Its plugin description says preview media may be loaded from the linked destination when a card is shown, so the image may remain dependent on that site’s availability.
A metadata preview is not necessarily a screenshot: an Open Graph image may be a logo, promotional graphic, or other image selected by the destination. Choose it when that is acceptable; use a rendered capture when the page’s appearance is the point.
Use a WordPress image you select yourself
If you already have an image representing a blogroll entry, WordPress can output an attached image at a registered size. The developer documentation describes theme support for post thumbnails, registered image sizes, and the_post_thumbnail(); when a theme has registered support, the default output size is post-thumbnail. This is useful for editorially selected artwork, but it does not fetch or screenshot the linked website.

Likewise, a WordPress Site Icon is for visual site identification in browser tabs and bookmarks. WordPress recommends a square image at least 512 by 512 pixels. Use it as a small identity mark, not as a substitute for a page thumbnail.

To display captures on a WordPress site, you still need a way to store or serve the resulting image and associate it with each link. Avoid exposing a private API key in public page markup.

Check these points before publishing the blogroll
- Preview type: confirm each thumbnail is a screenshot, metadata image, selected WordPress image, or Site Icon, rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
- Refresh behavior: establish whether your chosen method updates on demand, on a schedule, or only when you regenerate the image. WP Links Page describes scheduled and on-demand updates; behavior for other setups depends on their configuration.
- Image delivery: decide whether images are stored and served by your WordPress site or loaded from the destination. Simple Link Embed describes remote preview-media loading; other storage details depend on the chosen workflow.

Troubleshoot common thumbnail problems
The preview shows a logo, not the page
You are likely seeing a destination-provided Open Graph image or favicon rather than a screenshot. Use a screenshot capture route if the rendered page is required, or select a WordPress image if you want editorial control.
A remote preview image does not load
A metadata-based card may depend on media hosted by the destination. Check whether the destination still supplies the image and whether it is reachable. If you need control over delivery, use a workflow that stores or serves your own generated image.
The screenshot shortcode does not render
Check that the plugin is installed and active, that the shortcode syntax matches the plugin’s documentation, and that the required service account credentials are configured. Also verify plugin compatibility and current service terms; the documented example uses [urlbox url=urlbox.com thumb_width=600].

Review the capture or display dimensions configured in your chosen tool. For WordPress-native thumbnails, check the image size registered by the theme and the size requested by the_post_thumbnail(). A page screenshot and a compact thumbnail may need different dimensions.
