For a mostly stationary talking-head stream, start with 1080p at 30 fps if your camera, computer, software, and connection can sustain it. Use 60 fps when smoother motion matters and your camera, lighting, and capture chain support it reliably. Set shutter, exposure, white balance, and focus for the room and subject; there is no single best profile for every camera or stream.
Choose a resolution and frame rate your setup can maintain
Resolution describes image dimensions; frame rate describes how many frames appear each second. Choose them together and confirm that your camera can output the selected combination through the connection and software you use. A higher setting is not automatically better if it makes the image unstable, dark, or difficult for your system to handle.
- 1080p/30 fps: A sensible starting profile for a mostly stationary presenter when all parts of the setup support it. This is practical editorial guidance, not a universal manufacturer recommendation.
- 24, 25, or 30 fps: Often suitable for ordinary video applications. Fujifilm describes these rates as suitable for many common uses.
- 50 or 59.94/60 fps: Consider these when smoother motion is important, such as demonstrations with frequent movement. Fujifilm describes 50 and 59.94 fps as smoother for motion; your camera, lighting, capture path, and streaming system still need to support the mode.
Fujifilm notes that 25/50 fps can suit regions using 50 Hz mains power, while 30/59.94 fps can suit 60 Hz regions because lighting may flicker in relation to mains frequency. Treat that as a useful starting point, not a guarantee: LED and other fixtures can behave differently, so check the actual lights in your room.
Set shutter speed, then check for flicker
A common motion-rendering convention is to use a shutter speed around twice the frame rate. For example, Canon gives 25 fps at 1/50 second; Fujifilm gives 24 fps at 1/48 or 1/50 second. These are starting examples, not rules that override visible flicker or your camera’s available controls.

- Set your intended frame rate.
- Start with a shutter speed near twice that rate: for 25 fps, try 1/50 second; for 24 fps, try 1/48 or 1/50 second.
- Watch the stream preview for pulsing brightness or bands. If flicker appears, test shutter settings compatible with the room’s lights and confirm using the actual fixtures you will use live.
Changing shutter can affect both the motion look and exposure. Recheck the image after adjusting it rather than compensating blindly with other settings.
Expose the image with aperture, ISO, and light
Aperture controls how much light enters the lens and affects depth of field. ISO changes sensor sensitivity; raising it can help brighten the image, but high ISO can add visible digital noise. Set aperture for the depth-of-field look you want, then raise ISO only as needed for a properly exposed image.
- If the image is dark or noisy, improve or add lighting before relying on a very high ISO.
- Check that your face is exposed clearly and that bright areas are not distracting or washed out.
- After changing frame rate or shutter speed, review exposure again; the settings interact.
There is no camera-independent aperture or ISO number to recommend: lens, sensor, distance, and room lighting vary. Canon’s video guidance explains the roles of aperture and ISO and cautions that high ISO can increase noise: Canon, VIDEO CREATION – PART I.
Fix white balance for consistent color
When room lighting is stable, choose a white-balance preset that matches the main light or use a custom balance from a white object if your camera supports it. A fixed setting can avoid color shifts that may occur when automatic white balance reacts during the stream. Recheck it if the light source or room changes.

Choose focus for a still or moving subject
If you move while presenting
Use continuous autofocus with face or eye detection if your camera offers it and it tracks reliably. Fujifilm describes AF-C with face detection for tracking people; Canon also describes autofocus detection for people. Test it on camera before going live, especially if you move toward or away from the camera.
If the camera and subject stay put
Focus once, then verify that the subject remains sharp at the distance and framing you will use. A fixed focus can avoid distracting focus shifts, but only if the subject remains within the focused area.
Match camera output to your streaming software
The camera’s selected movie mode and the software’s capture settings both matter. Sony’s USB-streaming instructions explain that movie-mode exposure and focus carry into the live image, and that supported resolution and frame-rate options vary by camera. Follow your model’s instructions and use a mode the full chain can sustain.
- Connect the camera using the USB or capture method supported by your model. Sony recommends the supplied cable or a compatible equivalent for its USB-streaming workflow; compatibility depends on the camera.
- In OBS, add the camera or capture card as a Video Capture Source, then select a supported output mode. OBS’s Quick Start Guide also recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard, which takes hardware and network conditions into account.
- Preview the result and check framing, exposure, focus, color, and motion before starting the live stream. Do not assume that selecting the highest available resolution or frame rate will improve the delivered result.

Use camera-specific instructions where available
Camera capabilities differ, so use the model’s own supported modes and setup instructions rather than treating another camera’s settings as universal.
Logitech C922 example
Logitech’s instructions for the C922 Pro Stream Webcam configure OBS for 1280×720 at 60 fps using MJPEG. Logitech also warns that insufficient lighting can prevent 60 fps. This is a model-specific profile, not a recommendation for every webcam or a claim that every setup will achieve the same result. See Logitech’s C922 OBS setup.
Portrait or vertical streams
For a vertical stream, select a portrait output resolution supported by the camera and platform. Insta360’s Link-series guide gives 1080×1920 as an example portrait resolution and describes enabling the controller option as applicable. Its instructions apply to Link, Link 2, Link 2C, Link 2 Pro, and Link 2C Pro; check your own device and platform for supported dimensions. See the Insta360 Link-series live-streaming guide.
Check the setup before going live
- Confirm the selected resolution and frame rate are supported by the camera and appear correctly in the streaming software.
- Look for lighting flicker at the shutter speed and frame rate you intend to use.
- Check that the face is exposed clearly, with acceptable noise and consistent white balance.
- Verify focus at your normal position and during any movement you expect to make.
- Check that the framing matches the intended landscape or portrait orientation.
- Preview the complete camera-to-software chain; changing one setting can affect exposure, smoothness, or stability elsewhere.
Common problems and fixes
The image flickers or shows bands
Room lighting may be interacting with shutter speed and frame rate. Test a shutter setting compatible with the actual fixtures and consider whether a 50/25 or 60/30-family frame rate better suits the region and lights. Verify the result in the preview; regional guidance is not a substitute for testing your specific lamps.

The image looks noisy or too dark
Check exposure and improve the lighting before pushing ISO higher. High ISO can add digital noise. Recheck shutter speed after making changes, since shutter, aperture, and ISO affect the image together.
60 fps is unavailable or performs poorly
Confirm the camera, connection, capture device, and software all support the selected mode. Improve lighting if the image is dark or the camera cannot maintain its high-frame-rate mode. Logitech specifically flags insufficient lighting for the C922’s 60 fps setup; that note is model-specific.
Color changes during the stream
If the room illumination is steady, try a matching white-balance preset or custom balance instead of automatic adjustment. Revisit the setting if the light source changes.
Focus hunts or the subject goes soft
For a moving presenter, test continuous autofocus with face detection if available. For a fixed scene, focus once and verify sharpness at the final camera and subject positions. Autofocus behavior and controls vary by model.
