Add visual testing by capturing a stable screen during a test and comparing it with an approved reference image. Keep it alongside functional assertions: the test can confirm that a button works, while the image comparison checks that the rendered screen still looks right. For Android Compose UI, Android Developers calls screenshot testing the recommended way to verify visual attributes. For a UI-driven flow, Maestro offers assertScreenshot; Firebase Test Lab can run Android instrumentation tests across selected devices and show screenshot artifacts with the results.
Choose the test layer that fits your app
Visual checks can run at different levels. Pick the narrowest level that answers the question you need the test to catch.
| Approach | Best fit | Execution and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Android screenshot testing | Verifying rendered UI attributes, especially in Compose UIs. | Follow the current Android Developers guide for the test library and setup: Android screenshot testing. The available guidance establishes the approach but does not specify setup commands or release requirements here, so check the live guide before choosing versions. |
Maestro assertScreenshot |
Checking a screen as part of a UI-driven flow. | Maestro documents Android emulators and physical devices, and iOS simulators. The assertion compares the current screen with a known-good image. See Maestro’s command reference and supported platforms. |
| Firebase Test Lab Android instrumentation | Running Android tests across selected device configurations and reviewing screenshots with test results. | The documented flow uses AndroidX screenshot capture and Firebase Test Lab’s screenshot-processing library. See Firebase’s instrumentation screenshot guide and Test Lab getting started. |
This guidance establishes Android-native and Android-hosted paths, plus Maestro’s cross-platform UI automation support. It does not establish the current native iOS screenshot-testing setup; consult current Apple XCTest and Xcode documentation for that workflow rather than assuming Android steps apply.
Build a reliable baseline before adding many checks
A screenshot comparison is only useful when the test reaches the intended state and the image has a meaningful reference. Begin with a few important screens—such as a high-traffic entry point or a critical completion state—instead of snapshotting every screen. Keep the test scenario and rendering configuration consistent while creating and updating baselines.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
- Choose a screen and state whose appearance matters to users, and identify the flow that reliably reaches it.
- Set the conditions the test depends on, including app state, viewport or device, orientation, locale, and relevant content.
- Capture the expected rendering only after the UI is stable. Name the baseline so a developer can identify its screen and scenario.
- Run the test and inspect the fresh image beside the reference. Decide whether a mismatch is a defect, an intentional design change, or environmental variation before approving a new baseline.
Matching configurations makes diffs easier to interpret, but it cannot guarantee identical rendering on every run. A reference image is an approved expectation, not proof that the screen is correct; review it when it changes.
Add a screenshot assertion with Maestro
In a Maestro flow, use assertScreenshot to compare the current screen with a known-good image. The command accepts a reference path, an optional cropOn selector, and an optional thresholdPercentage. Its documented default threshold is 95.0 percent; the reference also shows an example configured at 98 percent. That default is a Maestro setting, not a universal visual-testing standard. Check the current command reference for syntax and behavior before adopting it in a project.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Use cropOn only when the baseline is cropped in the same way. Choose a threshold based on the screen and expected rendering variation, make the choice explicit when it differs from the default, and document why it is appropriate. A permissive threshold can hide visible changes; a strict one can flag benign rendering differences.
Run Android screenshots in Firebase Test Lab
For Firebase Test Lab’s documented Android instrumentation workflow, add its screenshot-processing library, register FirebaseScreenCaptureProcessor, and capture screenshots during the tests. Build the app and test APKs, run the instrumentation test in Test Lab, then review screenshots alongside the test results. Follow the instrumentation guide for the current dependency, registration, and project setup details rather than copying unverified version-specific snippets.

Test Lab runs Android tests against selected device configurations as a matrix. Choose device models, OS versions, orientation, and locale to represent the audience and layouts your app supports; a larger matrix is not automatically more valuable. Firebase makes outcomes and artifacts available for review. Its troubleshooting guidance cautions that screenshot-diff tests can be more brittle on some device types and recommends Arm emulator devices for these tests: Test Lab troubleshooting and FAQ.
Triage failures without masking regressions
When a screenshot check fails, compare the actual and reference images and inspect the test’s device and configuration before changing the baseline. A difference can be an intended UI update, a real visual regression, or variation in the environment.

- Unexpected content or layout: confirm that the test reached the intended app state and that locale, orientation, and device match the baseline.
- Small rendering differences: check whether the execution target is introducing variation. For Firebase screenshot-diff tests, its guidance specifically recommends Arm emulator devices because some device types can be brittle.
- Only one region matters: consider a crop if the tool supports it, and ensure the baseline uses the same crop. With Maestro,
cropOnfocuses the comparison on a selected element. - Design change is intentional: review the changed image and approve a new reference deliberately; do not update baselines automatically just to make a failing test pass.
Keep visual coverage useful and maintainable
Visual testing adds maintenance: an approved design change requires reference-image review, and comparison settings need care. Keep the initial suite focused on screens where visual defects matter, use clear baseline names, and make test conditions repeatable. Expand the device matrix when a supported configuration represents a meaningful audience or layout—not simply to maximize the number of runs.
For Android Compose, start with the Android screenshot-testing guidance. For flow-level assertions, use Maestro’s screenshot assertion. For Android device-matrix execution and artifacts, use Firebase Test Lab.

For website screenshots used in visual checks, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; it is not a replacement for an in-app Android or iOS screenshot assertion.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options. Example cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
