There is no single best live-stream setting. Start with the bitrate your platform recommends for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then make sure your connection can sustain it. For YouTube, use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; test with representative motion and audio before going live. If frames drop, troubleshoot the connection and ingest path before assuming the encoder needs better settings.

Choose settings for the platform and video you are sending

Bitrate recommendations depend on the destination, codec, resolution, and frame rate. A bitrate that is appropriate for one combination may be too high or unnecessarily low for another. Begin with the destination’s current encoder guidance, then test whether your actual connection and encoder can maintain those settings.

YouTube’s current recommendations include the following figures. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain the bitrate.

Resolution and frame rate H.264 AV1 or H.265
720p30 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
2160p60 (4K) 50 Mbps 35 Mbps

These values come from YouTube’s published live-encoder recommendations; the help page does not expose a publication date. Check YouTube’s current guidance when setting up a stream, since platform requirements can change. YouTube supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 over RTMP or RTMPS, and supports up to 60 fps. Its documentation recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to and through Google’s servers.

Match resolution and frame rate to the content

Choose a resolution and frame rate that suit both the source and the encoder’s capabilities. Fast movement can make a higher frame rate useful, but it also affects the bitrate the platform recommends. If your connection cannot sustain the recommended setting, consider a lower resolution or frame rate rather than forcing a bitrate that causes instability. Avoid upscaling a low-resolution source just to select a larger output; a larger setting does not create detail that is not in the source.

Use the platform’s encoder parameters

For YouTube, configure constant bitrate (CBR) and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says the keyframe frequency should not exceed 4 seconds. Select an ingest protocol supported by your encoder and destination; RTMPS is the encrypted option YouTube recommends. If your encoder offers codecs, use one supported by the destination and base the bitrate on that codec’s recommendation.

Check that your connection can sustain the bitrate

A platform recommendation is a target for the stream, not evidence that your connection can deliver it steadily. YouTube advises running an upload-speed test. A speed test is useful as a starting point, but stability matters too: an intermittent or congested connection may still drop frames even if a brief test reports enough upload capacity.

OBS’s official connection-troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point. Treat that as a heuristic, not a universal bitrate formula: leave room for normal variation and other network traffic, and respect the destination’s bitrate limits. OBS also notes that the upload speed needs to be stable.

Run a realistic pre-stream test

  1. Set the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval for your destination.
  2. Test the stream before the event using movement and audio similar to what you expect to send live. A mostly static test image may not reveal issues that appear during fast motion.
  3. Watch the encoder and platform’s stream-health indicators while the test runs. Look for dropped frames or platform warnings rather than judging quality from a still preview alone.
  4. If the test is unstable, adjust one relevant factor at a time—starting with bitrate or the connection path—then test again.
  5. During the live event, continue monitoring stream health and review any messages from the platform.

YouTube recommends testing with similar movement and audio before the event and monitoring stream health during it. The test helps expose problems before viewers encounter them; it cannot guarantee that network conditions will remain unchanged later.

Understand latency trade-offs

Latency is the delay between what happens at the source and what viewers see. The platform’s latency mode affects how quickly the stream is delivered, but the available choices can constrain other settings. On YouTube, low latency is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams; those streams use normal latency.

Choose a latency mode based on how much real-time interaction matters for the event and which video settings you need. If 4K is essential, plan for normal latency on YouTube. Do not assume that lowering your encoder bitrate alone will make a platform’s delivery mode faster.

Troubleshoot dropped frames and an unstable stream

OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or the stream cannot keep up with its configured bitrate. If enough frames are dropped, the stream can disconnect. Work through the network path methodically rather than immediately changing unrelated image-quality settings.

  1. Try another ingest server. A different server may provide a better connection route. OBS notes that Twitch users on Windows can use TwitchTest to identify servers with better quality scores; this is a Twitch-specific diagnostic, not a general YouTube tool.
  2. Lower the bitrate. Reduce it to a value your connection can sustain, while staying within the destination’s limits. OBS’s 75%-of-total-upload-speed suggestion is a troubleshooting starting point, not a promised safe value for every connection.
  3. Check whether the issue is service-specific. Testing another service can help distinguish a destination or ingest-path problem from a broader connection problem.
  4. Prefer wired Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unstable. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming. If you are on Wi-Fi, test over Ethernet to see whether wireless instability is contributing. A cable will not resolve ISP congestion or a platform-side fault.
  5. Check software that can interfere with the connection. OBS identifies VPNs, security software, and bundled network software as possible sources of interference. Temporarily investigate them one at a time, following your network and security requirements.
  6. Review the network hardware and ISP path. If the problem persists, check the modem, router, and other network equipment, and contact your ISP. Congestion or changes on the ISP side may be outside your control.
  7. On Windows, consider OBS network troubleshooting options. OBS lists network optimizations and TCP pacing as possible settings to investigate; some users report improvement, but neither is a guaranteed fix.

Dynamic bitrate is a fallback, not a repair

OBS can dynamically lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which may reduce frame drops. The trade-off is reduced image quality, and it does not fix the underlying connection problem. Use it as a fallback when appropriate, then continue investigating why the connection is unstable.

Separate network problems from other quality problems

Start with the symptom your software reports. Dropped frames point toward the connection to the remote server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain, according to OBS. If the stream stays connected but looks poor, first compare the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate with the destination’s recommendations. If the encoder itself cannot maintain the selected output, lower the workload or output settings and test again; do not raise bitrate to solve a problem the connection or encoder cannot handle.

For Twitch, the official guidance surfaced for this topic covers bitrate, resolution, frame rate, encoder choices, and performance, but no numerical settings are given here. Its Enhanced Broadcasting feature is described as using multiple client-side encodes and automatic stream configuration; check Twitch’s current dashboard and documentation for applicable settings rather than applying YouTube’s figures to Twitch.
