Live streaming moves audio and video through four distinct stages: a source produces media, an encoder compresses it into a stream, a platform ingests and may transcode it, and a delivery network sends suitable versions to viewers. Bitrate is the rate of encoded data—not a quality setting by itself—and the right value depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, platform guidance, and the stability of your upload connection.

How a live stream gets from its source to a viewer

A camera, screen capture, or audio/video mixer creates the source material. A streaming encoder compresses and packages that material using a codec and settings such as resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. It sends the resulting stream to a platform’s ingest endpoint. The platform may then create alternate renditions, and its delivery infrastructure sends an appropriate version to each viewer.

  1. Source: The camera, computer, mixer, or other input produces audio and video.
  2. Encoding: An encoder compresses and packages the source into a stream using selected settings.
  3. Ingest: The stream travels from the encoder to the platform’s receiving endpoint.
  4. Transcoding: The platform may convert the incoming feed into alternate resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates.
  5. Delivery: The platform distributes an output to viewers over its delivery infrastructure.

These terms describe connected stages, not interchangeable ones. OBS defines transcoding as turning one source feed into feeds at different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates (OBS Project, June 9, 2021). YouTube says it automatically creates multiple output formats, though which renditions viewers can select depends on the platform.

Encoding, bitrate, transcoding, and delivery: what each means

Term What it means Why it matters
Encoding Compressing and packaging the original audio/video into a stream. It determines how the source is represented for transmission, including the chosen codec and settings.
Bitrate The amount of encoded data sent over time, commonly expressed in bits per second. It affects the upload capacity required and can affect visual or audio quality; it is not a quality guarantee on its own.
Transcoding Creating one or more alternate outputs from the incoming stream. Different outputs can suit viewers with different devices, resolutions, or network capacity.
Delivery Distributing an output stream from the platform’s infrastructure to viewers. It determines how the platform gets the stream to viewers and can affect compatibility, latency, and playback resilience.

What bitrate should you use?

Start with the platform’s recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then make sure your upload connection can sustain the outgoing stream reliably. A bitrate that is too high for a constrained or unstable connection can contribute to dropped frames or interruptions; lowering it may improve stability, but can reduce detail. A larger bitrate does not automatically make a stream look better if the source, encoder, codec, or platform output is the limiting factor.

YouTube’s recommended video bitrates

YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, gives these recommendations. They are YouTube-specific settings, not universal requirements for every platform or ingest protocol.

Output AV1 or H.265 video H.264 video
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps recommended 14 Mbps recommended
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps recommended 17 Mbps recommended

These figures are video bitrate recommendations. Audio also uses bandwidth: YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio and 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio. Your total outgoing data rate therefore includes audio as well as video. The available stable upload capacity needs to accommodate the stream consistently, not just match a momentary speed-test result.

Why codec, frame rate, and resolution change the answer

  • Codec: Different codecs compress video with different efficiency. YouTube’s 1080p recommendations differ between AV1 or H.265 and H.264.
  • Resolution: More pixels require more data to preserve detail at comparable conditions.
  • Frame rate: More frames per second can require more data, especially when scenes contain motion.
  • Content and motion: Fast movement and fine detail are harder to represent cleanly than a mostly static scene at the same settings.
  • Connection stability: A fluctuating upload connection can fail to sustain a bitrate that appears adequate in a brief test.

Keyframes, CBR, and audio settings for YouTube

For YouTube third-party streaming, its encoder guidance lists constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. A keyframe is a reference frame from which subsequent frames can be decoded; regular keyframes help the platform process the stream as expected. YouTube also recommends testing with representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health rather than assuming that a configuration works because it starts.

  • Rate control: Use CBR for the YouTube configuration covered by its guidance.
  • Keyframe interval: Set two seconds where possible; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: Use the audio bitrate appropriate to the output, bearing in mind YouTube’s listed values of 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio.
  • Test material: Include the movement and audio levels typical of the actual stream.
  • Monitoring: Check the platform’s stream-health indicators while testing and during the broadcast.

RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH compared

YouTube lists RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH for third-party ingest. The best choice depends on the platform’s support, the encoder’s capabilities, security needs, codec requirements, and acceptable latency. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP.

Protocol What the source establishes Practical consideration
RTMP Listed by YouTube as a third-party ingest protocol. A common ingest option; the protocol comparison does not establish encryption for RTMP itself.
RTMPS Listed by YouTube; it encrypts the RTMP connection. Use it when supported. YouTube states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”
HLS Listed by YouTube for ingest and supports additional codecs useful in some high-resolution workflows. Its segment-based operation typically adds latency compared with RTMP. YouTube’s HLS ingest guide lists media segments of 1–4 seconds; shorter segments may reduce latency but can increase rebuffering and reduce encoding efficiency.
DASH Listed by YouTube for ingest and supports additional codecs useful in some high-resolution workflows. Its segment-based operation typically adds latency compared with RTMP.

HLS segment-duration guidance comes from Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API guide; the page date was not visible in the available excerpt. Segment duration is not the only factor in end-to-end latency: encoder behavior, platform processing, and viewer playback also matter.

Why a stream buffers or drops frames

Buffering is a viewer-side symptom, not a diagnosis by itself. The problem can occur at the encoder, on the upload path, during platform processing, or between the delivery service and the viewer. A creator’s outgoing feed and the platform’s viewer-facing renditions are separate: a healthy incoming stream does not prove that every viewer has a suitable connection, and a viewer’s buffering does not by itself prove that the encoder is misconfigured.

  • Encoder reports dropped frames or unstable output: Check whether the selected bitrate is sustainable on the upload connection. Test at representative resolution, frame rate, motion, and audio; lower the output bitrate or settings if the connection cannot sustain them.
  • Platform reports ingest or stream-health problems: Confirm the ingest protocol and encoder settings match the platform’s guidance, including CBR and keyframe interval for YouTube. Check the stream key and endpoint configuration if the stream fails to reach the platform.
  • Only some viewers report buffering: The platform may be delivering a rendition that their connection or device cannot play smoothly. Transcoding can provide alternate outputs, but availability and viewer selection vary by platform.
  • HLS playback has more delay than expected: Segment-based delivery typically adds latency compared with RTMP. Shortening HLS segments can reduce latency, but YouTube warns that shorter segments may increase rebuffering and lower encoding efficiency.
  • Picture quality is poor despite a high bitrate: Check the codec, source quality, resolution, frame rate, and motion demands. Bitrate alone cannot guarantee quality.

Where the cloud and CDN fit

Cloud infrastructure can handle processing and delivery after a stream reaches a service; it does not change the meaning of encoding or bitrate. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API documentation describes one implementation: it accepts SRT or RTMP input, transcodes it to HLS or DASH, saves the output to Cloud Storage, and can serve it through Media CDN. That is an example architecture, not a requirement or universal design for live streaming.

For a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream

A conventional live-production setup encodes a live camera, screen, or mixer feed. A continuous prerecorded stream has a different source: uploaded video is played out as a YouTube live stream. If you build it yourself, the same fundamentals still apply: the outgoing stream has an encoding and bitrate, the platform receives it through ingest, and platform processing and delivery follow. Make sure you have the rights to stream the material and follow YouTube’s applicable policies; a live format does not itself grant permission to use copyrighted recordings.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day on StreamNeo.

Putting the pieces together

For a conventional live broadcast, choose a platform-supported protocol and encoder, set the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval for that platform, and verify that the upload path can sustain the outgoing stream. Then test with realistic audio and motion and monitor both encoder output and platform stream health. After ingest, any transcoding and viewer delivery are platform-side stages; they are not settings that a creator’s bitrate alone can control.
