Live game streaming has turned playing into a shared, real-time experience: audiences follow creators as well as games, chat with one another, and sometimes join platform or creator-led activities. In esports, fans can watch an official event broadcast or a creator’s co-stream. The shift is well documented in viewing and participation; the available figures do not establish that streaming caused higher game sales or changed how games are designed.
How has live game streaming changed gaming?
Games are now watched through creators and communities
A live stream combines gameplay with a creator’s commentary and real-time audience interaction. Viewers may come for the game, the player’s skill or personality, or the community that gathers around a channel. Chat makes the audience visible to one another and gives viewers a way to respond while play is happening, rather than only watching a finished video.
A 2023 peer-reviewed study by Ella Kokinda and Paige Rodeghero interviewed 15 software and game-development streamers. Those participants described motivations including accountability, self-education, community, and visibility. The study illuminates why some people stream development work; it is not a survey of all gaming streamers or viewers, so its findings should not be generalized to every gaming community. Watching has become measurable at very large scale
Twitch’s company-authored State of Gaming 2026 report says viewers watched more than 8.6 billion hours of gaming content on Twitch globally from January 1 through September 1, 2026. The report gives rounded, platform-reported figures; its growth comparisons use the same period in 2025. This is Twitch-specific watch time, not a total for all platforms. See Twitch’s report.

Separately, Stream Hatchet’s annual 2025 estimate, reported by GameSquare, put global live-streaming viewership across its measured market at 36.4 billion hours, up 6% year over year. That is a market-wide annual figure, not a Twitch-only gaming total, and it should not be compared directly with Twitch’s partial-year gaming hours. How has streaming changed the way people watch games?
Esports fans can choose official broadcasts or creator co-streams
Major competitions are no longer experienced only through an event’s official channel. A creator may co-stream or comment on an event, bringing a distinct presentation and an established audience to the same competition. In Stream Hatchet’s Q2 2025 measured market, esports viewership was evenly split between co-streaming channels and official esports channels. This is a snapshot for that quarter, not a universal or current share for every event.

The same Q2 2025 summary estimated 729 million hours watched for esports tournaments, 6% more than a year earlier, despite 37% fewer tournaments than in Q2 2024. These figures describe tournament viewing in Stream Hatchet’s measurement, not the total audience across every way of following esports. See the Q2 2025 summary.
Platform choice matters, and market shares are time-bound
Live game viewing is spread across platforms, and market estimates can change from quarter to quarter. Stream Hatchet’s Q2 2025 summary assigned Twitch 54% of its tracked market share, YouTube Gaming just under one quarter, and Kick almost 11%. These are historical shares for the report’s measured market in Q2 2025, not a 2026 ranking or a measure of all gaming activity.

The annual 2025 estimate and the Q2 2025 platform shares answer different questions: one describes a year’s total live-streaming viewership in a measured global market, while the other describes platform shares for a quarter. Neither establishes a permanent platform hierarchy. GameSquare and Stream Hatchet have commercial interests in live-streaming analytics; the figures should be attributed to them, not treated as independently audited facts. Some viewing is interactive beyond chat
Platform features can connect watching to in-game communities. Twitch reported that streams using its DropsEnabled tag generated 1.6 billion hours in the period covered by its report through September 1, 2026, and that 40 million users participated and claimed Drops. Drops apply to eligible viewing and games; they are not a feature of every stream, and those figures do not show that rewards caused viewers to buy a game. Twitch explains the figures in its report.

What streaming’s growth does—and does not—show
It shows a change in how games are experienced
- Gameplay can function as live entertainment, with commentary and audience conversation alongside the game itself.
- Communities can form around creators, genres, events, or shared interests, not only around playing together.
- Esports viewing can include both official production and creator-led commentary on the same event.
- Features such as Drops can make some viewing participatory, though eligibility and participation depend on the platform and game.
It does not quantify sales or design effects
Large audiences make discovery through streams plausible, and developers may pay attention to how people play and respond to games online. But the cited audience and participation figures do not establish how much exposure changes a game’s sales, whether streaming caused a design choice, or how those effects compare across genres. Viewership is evidence that people watch; it is not by itself evidence of commercial causation.
