Parts of this shift already exist, including VR playback and tools that broadcast headset experiences to conventional platforms. But there is no single interoperable metaverse or standard event format, and “metaverse streaming” can mean several technically different things.
What “metaverse streaming” can mean
The phrase covers distinct ways of capturing, delivering, and watching a live experience. A 360-degree video puts the viewer inside a recorded or live spherical image; a shared virtual venue is a rendered scene in which participants may interact. Both differ from broadcasting a headset’s view to a conventional livestream platform.
| Format | What the viewer experiences | Typical production path | Access consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional live video | A camera view on a screen, with interaction usually through chat, reactions, or platform controls. | Camera and encoder send a video stream to a platform. | Often viewable in a browser or livestream app. |
| 360-degree or VR video | A panoramic scene that the viewer can look around, often using a headset. | Immersive camera capture and a compatible video player. | Requires compatible playback for the immersive view; a headset is not required for all ordinary livestreams. |
| Interactive rendered venue | A virtual scene with avatars, shared presence, and potentially in-world actions. | A real-time application, such as a game engine, renders the experience for participants. | Depends on the venue’s app, devices, network, and accessibility options. |
| Headset-to-platform broadcast | Viewers on a conventional service watch a capture of a VR or mixed-reality experience. | Headset capture and a creator tool relay the view to a livestream platform. | Can reach viewers without headsets, but does not make the conventional broadcast itself a shared VR venue. |
ISO/IEC TR 23090-27:2025 describes render-based streaming workflows, in which media is distributed to applications such as game engines and renderers. That is a useful distinction: a conventional video player decodes a finished video, while a render-based application uses delivered resources to produce a scene. It does not establish one universal architecture for virtual events.
How could the metaverse change the viewer experience?
From watching a scene to choosing a viewpoint
A flat livestream fixes the camera’s perspective. In 360-degree video, viewers can choose where to look within the captured sphere. In a rendered venue, the experience may go further: people could occupy the same virtual room, move through it, and interact with the event or one another. These are different levels of immersion and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Events could synchronize more than video
A virtual performance might coordinate spatial audio, environmental visuals, avatars, and audience reactions. This can make the event feel more social and responsive than a single video feed. It does not guarantee that viewers will feel present: image quality, comfort, device controls, network conditions, accessibility, and the event’s design all matter.
ITU-T’s quality framework treats metaverse experience as more than audiovisual quality, naming “presence, immersion, interactivity and multi-sensory fidelity” among the relevant dimensions. In practice, organizers need to consider whether users can follow what is happening, control their viewpoint, and participate without relying on a particular headset or sensory cue.
VR playback is not the same as a metaverse venue
YouTube VR’s support information lists immersive 360-degree and VR content on certain devices, including Meta Quest 3, PICO 4, and Apple Vision Pro. This indicates playback support for listed devices; it does not mean every YouTube livestream is 360-degree, every live event has a VR production, or every virtual venue works in YouTube VR.

How creator workflows may change
Broadcasting a headset experience
One route is to capture what a creator sees in a headset and send it to an established streaming platform. Meta’s BeamXR Live case study describes broadcasting VR or mixed-reality experiences from Quest to Twitch, YouTube, and other platforms, with overlays, live chat, and clipping in the headset workflow. The result can let a conventional audience watch without owning a headset, though they see a broadcast view rather than participate in the same rendered space.

Another route combines a performer or avatar with a real room or physical environment. Meta’s mixed-reality capture guidance discusses sharing an in-headset experience with people in the same room or through streaming, and identifies production considerations such as performance optimization, lighting, actor selection, and storyboarding. Those details matter because capture is not just pressing “go live”: the scene must be legible and perform well while the headset renders it.
Building capture into an XR application
For developers, LIV describes in-app cameras and streaming for Unity and Unreal applications. This illustrates an integration path for XR experiences, but does not establish that every title supports capture or that adding a camera has no performance trade-offs. A creator should confirm support in the specific application and test the intended capture setup before an event.

What technical demands become more important?
Immersive experiences are sensitive not only to whether a stream arrives, but also to how smoothly and coherently it is presented. ITU-T identifies latency, jitter, frame rate, bandwidth or throughput, packet loss, synchronization, and task-oriented measures as relevant quality considerations. In a shared or interactive scene, delays and inconsistent rendering can disrupt interaction and weaken the sense of presence, even if the video itself looks sharp.
Illustrative VR targets, not universal guarantees
An ITU-T report published in June 2026 lists a VR frame-rate example of at least 90 frames per second and a motion-to-photon latency example of no more than 20 milliseconds for immersive social metaverse use cases. These are examples drawn from a literature review, not universal requirements for all live streams or a promise that meeting them will make every user comfortable. The report’s other cloud-streaming figures draw on named preliminary or submitted studies, so they should not be generalized without their study context.

For organizers, the practical lesson is to test the actual use case: headset model, scene complexity, participant actions, network conditions, and fallback viewing options. A threshold from a technical report is a design reference, not a substitute for checking the experience with the intended audience.

How to compare a virtual event with an ordinary livestream
There is no standardized commercial comparison of event platforms established here, so compare the service and production choices that affect your audience:
- Immersion: Is the event a fixed camera view, a panoramic video, or a rendered spatial scene?
- Interaction: Can viewers only chat and react, or can they share a venue and act inside it?
- Production: Does the event need a conventional camera and encoder, immersive camera capture, or real-time rendering and application infrastructure?
- Access: Can people join through a browser or phone, or do they need a particular headset and app? How will comfort and accessibility needs be handled?
- Delivery quality: How will the production maintain stable frame rate, low enough latency for its purpose, and synchronized audio and visuals under varying network conditions?
- Fallback: Are captions or subtitles, clear controls, and a non-headset option available if someone cannot or does not want to use the immersive version?
ITU-T’s quality framework and its work on immersive live experience services identify service quality, presentation equipment, cloud computing, accessibility, and measurement as relevant areas. The work reflects active technical development, not a settled, interoperable event standard.

A continuous loop of uploaded video serves a different purpose from an interactive virtual event: it can keep a YouTube channel live with prerecorded material, but it does not create a rendered venue or capture a live headset session. StreamNeo is a cloud service for the former use case: upload a recording or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live; the cloud keeps the uploaded videos looping without a computer or home connection staying on. It is YouTube-only and does not stream a camera or headset experience.

Where the metaverse is headed—and what is not settled
Standards work is underway: ITU lists work on an architectural framework for immersive live experience services, including use cases, presentation equipment, cloud computing, accessibility, and quality measurement. ISO/IEC TR 23090-27:2025 addresses render-based streaming workflows. These efforts show that the technical model is still developing; they do not show that virtual worlds will interoperate by default or that one platform will define how every event works.
The Metaverse Standards Forum reported more than 2,600 member organizations in 2024. That is the Forum’s organization-membership count, not a measure of consumers, stream viewers, or active metaverse users. The evidence cited here does not establish a reliable consumer-adoption figure. For now, the clearest change is a widening set of ways to watch and produce live experiences—not a single replacement for conventional streaming.
