Use SRT when both ends of your live-video workflow support it and the contribution path is unreliable enough that packet-loss recovery, jitter handling, or configurable buffering matters. Use RTMP when your destination or established workflow requires it. Check compatibility before choosing: a protocol cannot help if the receiving service does not accept it.

What SRT and RTMP do

SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) is an open-source transport technology for sending live video across IP networks. Haivision describes it as designed to improve streaming over unpredictable networks, including the Internet, by addressing jitter, bandwidth fluctuations, and typical packet loss. It runs over UDP and adds mechanisms such as acknowledgments and retransmission (ARQ), latency management, and encryption. The project documentation also describes features including forward error correction (FEC), connection bonding, and Stream ID; whether a particular encoder or receiver supports and enables them depends on its implementation.

RTMP remains useful when a streaming destination, encoder, or established workflow expects it. The available sources do not establish an equivalent, detailed RTMP feature comparison or a neutral head-to-head performance result, so a blanket claim that one protocol is always faster or more reliable would go beyond the evidence.

Choose by endpoint support first

Before evaluating network conditions, verify the supported ingest protocols on both ends: the sending encoder or software and the receiving platform or service. Check the exact model, software version, and ingest option you will use. If the destination accepts only RTMP, use RTMP; if both ends support SRT, you can weigh its recovery and buffering features against the needs of your link.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

SRT’s Stream ID can help route multiple SRT ingest streams to one address and port in workflows that support it. Do not assume this routing option, or any other SRT feature, is available in every product.

Compare the practical trade-offs

Decision SRT RTMP
Unpredictable or lossy contribution link Designed to compensate for jitter and recover from packet loss; actual results depend on configuration and the link. The sources reviewed do not establish a comparable technical feature assessment.
Buffering and delay Configurable latency buffer supports packet recovery, but adds buffering. Haivision SRT Protocol 1.5.4 documents a setting range of 20–8000 ms. No comparable verified numeric value is established by the sources reviewed.
Encryption SRT documentation describes AES encryption. Confirm that the specific sender and receiver implement and configure it. The sources reviewed do not substantiate comparable security variants or implementation details.
Compatibility Both sender and receiver must support SRT and the features your workflow needs. Choose it when the destination or workflow requires RTMP.

These are practical decision points, not results from a controlled protocol benchmark. Haivision’s comparison resource is vendor-authored, and its landing page does not provide a neutral benchmark. Set SRT latency for the actual network

SRT’s latency setting is a recovery buffer, not the total time from contribution to viewer. The buffer gives packets time to be reordered or retransmitted; setting it too low can leave packets arriving too late to recover. Tune it against the link’s round-trip time (RTT), packet loss, and burst-loss behavior rather than assuming the lowest value is best.

Use the documented rule of thumb carefully

Haivision’s SRT Protocol 1.5.4 documentation gives “four times RTT” as a rule of thumb for a “fairly good network” with 0.1 to 0.2% loss and no significant burst loss. It expresses the calculation as SRT Latency = RTT Multiplier * RTT and says the higher configured source or destination value is used. This is version-specific vendor guidance for those stated conditions, not a universal setting or a performance guarantee.

The documented 20–8000 ms range and guidance apply to Haivision’s SRT Protocol 1.5.4 documentation, last updated 12 February 2026. Haivision’s documentation has newer versions, so check the documentation for the version and product you actually deploy before applying a setting.

Make the decision in four steps

  1. Confirm ingest compatibility. Verify the actual receiving service and sending encoder or software accept the same protocol. If the destination requires RTMP, select RTMP.
  2. Assess the contribution path. If the path has variable bandwidth, jitter, packet loss, or burst loss, and both endpoints support SRT, its recovery mechanisms may make it the better fit. Do not treat this as a guarantee that SRT will outperform RTMP on every connection.
  3. Set buffering to match conditions. For SRT, use the endpoint documentation and real link measurements to select latency; account for the trade-off between recovery opportunity and added buffer delay.
  4. Verify security and optional features. Confirm encryption, FEC, bonding, Stream ID, and other requirements are supported and configured at the endpoints. A protocol feature’s existence does not prove a particular product has it enabled.

Common implementation problems

  • The receiver rejects the stream: Recheck the destination’s currently supported ingest protocols and the selected encoder output. A sender set to SRT cannot deliver to an RTMP-only ingest endpoint without a compatible conversion step.
  • Recovery is insufficient on a lossy link: Review RTT, packet-loss patterns, and bursts, then revisit the SRT buffer using the endpoint’s current version guidance. A buffer set too low can prevent late packets from being recovered in time.
  • End-to-end delay is higher than expected: Remember that SRT latency is one buffer component, not the full contribution-to-viewer delay. Measure the full path and account for other processing and delivery stages.
  • Expected encryption or resilience features are absent: Check the exact implementation, product model, and configuration. Support for AES, FEC, bonding, or Stream ID is not automatic across all SRT-capable products.

When equipment is part of the workflow

A professional contribution setup may use an SRT-capable video encoder or gateway, but extra hardware is not inherently required just to choose SRT. Verify the exact model’s supported protocols and features before buying; model-level compatibility and current availability vary. Haivision’s catalog includes encoders, transmitters, and gateways, but the sources reviewed do not establish a specific model recommendation.
