A live stream moves through five stages: a source creates audio and video, an encoder prepares it, the stream reaches a platform’s ingest server, the platform processes and distributes it, and viewers play it back. Understanding the terms at each stage makes it easier to choose settings and diagnose problems.

1. Source capture: what goes into a stream

Live streaming

Live streaming is broadcasting audio and video over the internet in real time. The signal travels from the broadcaster across the public internet to a platform, which receives it and distributes it to viewers. The platform’s processing and network conditions affect what viewers ultimately receive.

Source

The source is the audio and video being sent: for example, a camera and microphone, a game, a presentation, or a pre-recorded video played as a live broadcast. The source may be captured directly by streaming software, a console, or other equipment. The source determines what the encoder has available to prepare.

Do you need a camera or microphone?

No. Twitch says neither is required to stream. A microphone is useful for voice or collaboration, and a camera supports on-camera presentation, but they are optional choices rather than universal requirements. Other platforms and workflows may have different requirements.

2. Encoding: preparing the audio and video

Encoder and encoding

An encoder is the software or hardware that prepares audio and video for transmission. Encoding is the process of compressing and packaging that media into a stream. It might be streaming software on a computer, a console’s built-in streaming function, or dedicated hardware; a separate encoder box is not necessary for every creator. The particular encoder must be compatible with the platform and destination.

Codec

A codec is a method for compressing and decompressing video or audio. The encoder uses codecs to prepare the media; the platform and playback devices must be able to handle the formats involved. Codec options can depend on the ingest protocol and destination, so check the platform’s current documentation before selecting one.

Resolution

Resolution is the dimensions of the video image, commonly expressed as width by height or with labels such as 1080p. Higher resolution generally needs more bitrate and encoding capacity under Twitch guidance. Selecting a larger image does not guarantee a clearer stream if the available upload bandwidth or encoder cannot sustain it.

Frame rate / FPS

Frame rate, measured in frames per second (FPS), describes how many video frames are sent each second. Higher frame rates can make motion appear smoother, but can require more encoding resources. Resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate work together; raising one setting can increase demands elsewhere.

Bitrate and ingest bitrate

Bitrate is the amount of data sent per second, commonly expressed in kilobits or megabits per second. Ingest bitrate is the rate the broadcaster sends to the platform. It is not the same as a viewer’s download speed. A higher ingest bitrate needs more available upload capacity and can improve quality only up to practical limits; it is not a standalone quality control. Twitch and YouTube publish platform-specific encoder guidance, so use the recommendation for the destination rather than assuming one value fits every stream.

CBR and VBR

CBR (constant bitrate) aims to send data at a steady rate; VBR (variable bitrate) changes the rate as content complexity changes. Twitch says to use CBR whenever possible on its platform, and YouTube also lists CBR in its encoder recommendations. These are platform-specific recommendations, not a universal rule for every destination or encoder.

Keyframe interval

A keyframe interval is the time between keyframes in the encoded video. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Twitch warns that changing its default interval can cause viewing problems on some devices. Follow the destination’s current guidance: the right setting is platform-dependent.

3. Upload and ingest: getting the stream to the platform

Ingest and ingest server

Ingest is the receiving stage where a platform accepts a broadcast, checks its authorization or registration, and prepares it for distribution. An ingest server is the receiving system or endpoint the encoder sends the stream to. A connection to ingest is only one part of the path; a stream can still encounter issues during processing, distribution, or viewer playback.

RTMP and RTMPS

RTMP means Real-Time Messaging Protocol. Twitch uses it for ingest, and YouTube supports it. RTMPS is a secure extension of RTMP. YouTube recommends RTMPS; its encryption protects data in transit to YouTube’s servers. RTMP or RTMPS is a protocol for sending the stream, not the same thing as the stream key that authorizes it.

HLS and DASH

HLS and DASH are HTTP-based, segment-oriented protocols that YouTube supports for ingest. YouTube’s documented comparison says they support additional codecs, which can suit some high-resolution use cases, but their segmented delivery typically has greater latency than RTMP. These are YouTube-specific ingest options, not universal choices across streaming platforms. Check whether your destination and encoder support the protocol and codecs you intend to use.

RTMP URL, broadcast URL, and stream key

An RTMP URL or broadcast URL identifies the ingest endpoint—the destination address the encoder connects to. A stream key is a secret authorization credential that connects the encoder to a channel or account. The URL tells the encoder where to send data; the key authorizes the stream. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to the associated account. Do not show it on stream or share it in screenshots or messages.

How to choose an ingest option

For YouTube, compare the options against the stream you need to send and the equipment you have. Protocol support, codec choices, and recommended settings can change, so verify the destination’s current official guidance and your encoder’s compatibility.

  • Codec and resolution needs: YouTube documents additional codec support for HLS/DASH compared with RTMP/RTMPS; confirm the specific codec, resolution, and encoder support.
  • Latency: YouTube says HLS/DASH ingest is typically higher-latency than RTMP because it is segment-based.
  • Compatibility: Check the particular destination, encoder, and software documentation; compatibility should not be assumed.
  • Capacity: Ensure your upload bandwidth and encoding capacity can sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.

4. Platform processing and distribution

Latency

Latency is the delay between the original capture or transmission and the moment a viewer sees it. It affects how close a live conversation or reaction can feel to real time. The protocol and platform’s delivery mode matter: YouTube says HLS/DASH ingestion typically has greater latency than RTMP because it is segment-based. Latency is distinct from buffering, which is a playback interruption or pause.

Stream health, unstable events, and dropped frames

Stream health describes whether the platform is receiving a stable stream that meets its technical expectations. Unstable or dropped events can be associated with upload capacity, encoder load, connection problems, or settings, but a label alone does not establish the cause. Use the destination’s health tools to check measured conditions before changing settings. Twitch Inspector provides stream health and specification details for Twitch broadcasts.

Buffering

Buffering is when playback pauses or waits for more data rather than continuing smoothly. It happens on the viewer side of the path and is not identical to a dropped connection at ingest. Check platform health information and measurements before concluding whether the cause is the broadcaster’s upload, platform delivery, or a viewer’s connection.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

5. Viewer playback: what the audience receives

The platform takes the incoming stream, processes it, and distributes it to viewers. What a viewer sees depends on the source and encoder settings as well as platform processing, the viewer’s device, and the network path. A broadcaster’s ingest bitrate is the rate sent upstream; it does not describe the download rate available to every viewer.

Glossary-informed checks before going live

  • Confirm the source and encoder are producing the audio and video you intend to broadcast.
  • Check the destination’s current recommendations for codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and protocol.
  • Make sure the encoder’s upload demand fits your available upload bandwidth and its processing demand fits your hardware.
  • Protect the stream key as you would any account credential.
  • Use the destination’s health or inspector tools to investigate instability instead of guessing from one symptom.
  • Check copyright permissions for all audio and video you broadcast. A live format does not make copyrighted material yours or guarantee that a platform will allow it.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your glossary question comes from wanting a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos around the clock, StreamNeo runs that loop from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, and an automatic recovery feature responds if YouTube drops the stream. Videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not camera-based live capture. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
