For YouTube Live, choose a resolution and frame rate your upload connection can sustain, then set the encoder to YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your video codec. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and leave about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. These are YouTube-specific recommendations, not universal settings for other platforms.
Choose settings around the stream you need
Resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, available upload bandwidth, and latency work together. Higher resolution and frame rate require more bitrate in YouTube’s recommendations. Choose the highest combination your connection can reliably sustain, then test it under conditions similar to the live event.
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates in Mbps. They are recommendations, not guarantees of visual quality for every scene; fast motion and image complexity can affect the result. Check the current requirements for your destination before using these values on another platform.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 / H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
Do not confuse minimum bitrates with recommendations. For example, YouTube’s table lists minimum ranges of 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60, while its recommended values are 12 Mbps and 17 Mbps respectively. Use the recommended column as the starting point when the connection can support it.

Set the encoder for YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that must not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.
Video and picture format
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the output to the content and reliable upload capacity. YouTube detects encoder resolution and frame rate by default; custom stream keys allow manual resolution settings.
- Codec: Choose a codec supported by your encoder and use the corresponding bitrate recommendation. The cited YouTube guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for video.
- Scan and color: YouTube’s advanced guidance lists square pixels, progressive scan, and Rec. 709 for SDR. It lists H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in the guidance consulted.
- Keyframes and rate control: Set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
Audio
YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Include audio in your bandwidth planning and test levels and synchronization in the preview before the event.

Check upload bandwidth and leave headroom
The relevant constraint is upload speed, not download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom and notes that a shared connection may provide less bandwidth to the streamer than the office’s advertised or measured total. Its guidance says, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).”
- Run an upload speed test where and when you will stream, ideally while the network is being used as it will be during the event.
- Compare the connection’s usable upload capacity with the total outgoing bitrate of the stream.
- Allow for other traffic on a shared connection. If sending multiple streams or a backup stream, include their combined bitrate in the calculation.
- If the connection cannot sustain the selected settings with headroom, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again.
Understand resolution and latency trade-offs
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers using different devices and network conditions. Your encoder’s resolution is therefore not the only playback quality viewers may receive. Choose your outgoing settings for a stable contribution stream rather than assuming every viewer can watch at the input resolution.

Latency is the delay between capture at the camera or encoder and the event appearing in the stream. Lower latency can increase playback buffering. If real-time audience interaction is not important, minimizing latency may matter less than reliable playback. YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable at 2160p/4K in the guidance consulted, so decide between 4K and that latency option based on the event’s needs.
Choose a capture and production setup
YouTube supports webcam streaming and encoder-based streaming. An encoder may be software on a computer or standalone hardware. It is useful when you need to share a screen or gameplay, use external audio or video equipment, or coordinate multiple cameras and microphones. A webcam is a simpler route for a basic camera-and-microphone presentation. The official guidance supports these equipment categories but does not establish a best brand or model.

Set up and test the YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming: In YouTube, enable live streaming for the channel. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this before the event day.
- Pick the production method: Use a webcam or mobile option for a simpler setup, or configure an encoder for screen sharing, external gear, or a more involved production.
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio: Open the stream setup in YouTube Studio, then copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming destination fields. Treat the key like a password; keep it private and reset it if it is exposed.
- Configure the encoder: Set resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio format, CBR, and keyframe interval using the YouTube recommendations above and the upload capacity you measured.
- Run a representative test: Include the event’s typical movement and audio. Review the Live Control Room preview before going public, and confirm that picture, sound, and synchronization are acceptable.
- Monitor the broadcast: Watch stream health and encoder messages during the event. If using a backup encoder, test failover in advance rather than relying on an untested backup.
Preflight checklist
- Confirm the channel is enabled for live streaming and allow time for first-time activation.
- Measure upload speed and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Set up the stream at least two hours ahead; YouTube’s tips suggest starting encoders at least 15 minutes before the event.
- Preview the feed in Live Control Room and test representative audio and motion.
- Keep the stream key private, and know how to reset it if compromised.
- Monitor stream health and error messages while live; test backup-encoder failover before the event if applicable.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
Connection or stream health is unstable
Likely cause: The total outgoing bitrate is too close to available upload bandwidth, or other users and services are consuming the shared connection. Fix: Recheck upload speed under realistic conditions, include all simultaneous streams, restore headroom, and lower the output settings if needed.
The image looks poor despite using the recommended bitrate
Likely cause: The selected resolution, frame rate, codec, or content complexity may not suit the available bitrate; a bitrate recommendation is not a quality guarantee. Fix: Verify that the encoder is sending the intended codec and settings, then test a lower resolution or frame rate if the connection is constrained.

The stream does not connect
Likely cause: The encoder may have an incorrect stream URL or key, or the channel may not yet be enabled for live streaming. Fix: Re-enter the URL and key from the YouTube Studio stream setup, confirm activation, and reset the key if it may have been exposed.
Viewers experience buffering after latency is reduced
Likely cause: Lower latency can trade delay for greater playback buffering. Fix: Choose a latency setting that fits the importance of audience interaction and the stability expected from viewers’ connections; test before the event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving a computer and encoder running at home: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
