YouTube Studio can schedule livestream events, but it does not document a built-in feature for rotating different playlists continuously across a 24/7 channel. To do that, schedule the live event in YouTube Studio and use an encoder or other verified automation system to assemble and change the continuous video feed.
What YouTube Studio schedules—and what it does not
YouTube Studio lets you schedule a livestream event. The video and audio reaching viewers, however, come from an encoder or another feed system connected to that event using YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s official guidance describes scheduling and connecting a stream, but does not describe native, continuous playlist rotation in Studio. An ordinary YouTube playlist organizes videos; it is not a scheduler for a live feed.
That separation is the key to planning the channel: use YouTube to create and announce the live event, and use a separate system to decide which videos play, in what order, and when the rotation changes.
Check channel eligibility first
Before setting up the event, confirm that the channel meets YouTube’s current livestream prerequisites. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have livestream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its eligibility guidance also states that streamers must be at least 16 years old. Build the playlist rotation outside YouTube Studio
Choose an encoder or other automation workflow that can assemble your videos into a continuous feed and change the lineup on the schedule you need. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to connect an encoder, but do not prescribe a playlist-rotation product or configuration. Verify that any software you choose can actually schedule or rotate multiple playlists; an encoder by itself may only transmit the source you give it.
Before going live, decide how the rotation should work: for example, whether each playlist runs as a block, whether a later block replaces the current one at a set time, and what should play if a file or transition fails. Check that the system can output a feed compatible with YouTube’s live setup and can recover or be restarted if the connection drops. These are implementation requirements to evaluate, not features YouTube Studio’s schedule provides.

Schedule the YouTube live event and connect the feed
- Create or schedule the event: In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open Live Control Room > Manage > Schedule Stream. Create a new event or reuse settings, then add the event details and scheduled time. YouTube documents reusing settings as a way to reduce repeated setup. See YouTube’s encoder livestream instructions.
- Copy the connection details: In the event’s stream settings, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: enter it only in the encoder or automation system that will send this channel’s feed.
- Configure the encoder: Paste the URL and key into the corresponding server/URL and stream-key fields in your encoder. Select the feed or playlist rotation you prepared, and start sending it before the scheduled start so you can check the incoming preview.
- Check the preview and start the event: In Live Control Room, wait for the encoder preview and confirm that the expected video and audio are arriving. When ready, click Go live. Scheduling the event does not itself start playlist playback; the connected feed must be running.
- Tell viewers what to expect: Publish the recurring schedule and communicate changes. YouTube’s guidance recommends telling viewers when streams are planned; a scheduled event can appear as upcoming and may let viewers opt in to reminders. See YouTube’s guidance on planning livestreams.
Plan for archives and rewind on a continuous channel
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement is about automatic archiving, not a general maximum live duration. For a longer-running broadcast, do not promise viewers that the full stream will be saved as one archive. YouTube’s DVR guidance also warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s livestream DVR guidance.
You can organize completed livestream archives into YouTube playlists, according to YouTube’s playlist guidance. That helps viewers find past broadcasts, but it does not control which videos the live encoder plays.

Rights and channel policies still apply
Only include video and audio you have the rights or permissions to stream. A scheduled event, an encoder, or a playlist does not grant permission to use copyrighted material. Review the rights for every item in every rotation, including music and third-party footage, and check YouTube’s current policies before broadcasting. No playlist workflow can guarantee monetization or channel growth.
Troubleshoot common scheduling and feed problems
- The scheduled event exists, but viewers see no video: The event schedule is separate from the encoder feed. Check that the encoder is running and that it has the correct event’s stream URL and key; then wait for a preview in Live Control Room.
- The preview shows the wrong video or playlist: Check the rotation and active source in the automation system. Studio schedules the event but does not choose the playlist being sent.
- The encoder cannot connect: Recheck the copied URL and key, confirm that they belong to the intended event, and verify the encoder’s connection settings. If the stream key was replaced or changed, update the encoder with the current one.
- The event time or reminder is wrong: Review the scheduled event details in Live Control Room and update the schedule information viewers rely on. Announce changes so viewers are not left with an outdated timetable.
- Viewers cannot rewind far enough or find the full archive: For broadcasts longer than 12 hours, YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable, and its automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not treat a 24/7 broadcast as guaranteed to have a complete rewind or archive.
