Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11You can keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running from Linux by having FFmpeg send a looping video to YouTube Live and having systemd start and supervise the FFmpeg process. First make sure a manual FFmpeg run reaches YouTube; then put that working command in a system service, enable it at boot, and check both systemd and YouTube Studio. A service restart can relaunch a process, but it cannot fix a bad stream key, missing media, a broken network connection, or a broadcast that YouTube has ended.
Before you build the service
- Enable live streaming on the YouTube channel. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.
- Prepare a Linux host that can remain on. A VPS is one option; a public Ubuntu example uses an Ubuntu VPS for a continuous FFmpeg pipeline. Consider sustained CPU use, network transfer limits, storage, server location, and the full ongoing cost before choosing a host. The example is not a neutral provider comparison: the repository’s setup and operations notes.
- Install FFmpeg and prepare your media. Confirm that the file exists, is readable by the service account, and can be played by FFmpeg. This guide uses stream copy in its example command, so the input’s audio and video formats must be accepted by YouTube; otherwise, configure FFmpeg to encode compatible output.
- Plan secure access to the stream key. Treat it as a password. Do not commit it to a repository, publish it in a script, or paste it into logs or command transcripts.
Create and verify a YouTube stream manually first
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select a live stream. YouTube’s current instructions cover creating a stream with an encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Use the current values shown for that stream; do not assume an older saved key or server address is still the right one.
- Run FFmpeg manually with your media, server URL, and key. The following is a command shape, not a guaranteed universal configuration; replace the example paths and values, and make sure the selected input codecs and output meet YouTube’s current requirements:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/youtube-stream/video.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "RTMP_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"Replace
RTMP_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEYwith the ingest URL and key from YouTube Studio. Avoid saving a real key in shell history or a file readable by other users. If your ingest URL is structured differently, use the exact server URL and key format provided by YouTube. - Check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, wait for the encoder preview and use the Live Control Room controls to go live as directed by YouTube. A successful FFmpeg process alone does not establish that the broadcast is visible or healthy.
Put the working FFmpeg command under systemd
Only automate a command after it works manually. The example below uses a dedicated, unprivileged account named ytstream, a working directory, a protected environment file for the key, and systemd’s on-failure restart policy. Adapt account names, paths, and environment handling to your distribution. There is no single unit file that is universal across Linux distributions.
1. Create a service account and directories
As an administrator, create a dedicated account and directories for the media and service configuration. For example:

sudo useradd --system --create-home --home-dir /srv/youtube-stream ytstream
sudo install -d -o ytstream -g ytstream /srv/youtube-stream/media
sudo install -d -o root -g root -m 0750 /etc/youtube-stream
Place the video in /srv/youtube-stream/media/ and give the service account read access to it. Confirm FFmpeg is installed at the path you use in the unit; on many systems it is /usr/bin/ffmpeg, but check with command -v ffmpeg.
2. Store the key outside the unit file
Create /etc/youtube-stream/stream.env so only root can read it. It should contain the values used by your command, for example:
STREAM_URL=YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL
STREAM_KEY=YOUR_YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY
Set restrictive permissions, such as sudo chown root:root /etc/youtube-stream/stream.env and sudo chmod 600 /etc/youtube-stream/stream.env. Do not put real credentials in a public repository. Environment-file handling and secret exposure vary by system; restrict administrative access and avoid commands that print the file or key. If the key is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Studio and update this file.

3. Create the system service
Create /etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service with the following template. Check the paths and FFmpeg arguments for your host and media:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →[Unit]
Description=YouTube 24/7 FFmpeg stream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=ytstream
Group=ytstream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/youtube-stream
EnvironmentFile=/etc/youtube-stream/stream.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/youtube-stream/media/video.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv ${STREAM_URL}/${STREAM_KEY}
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Systemd’s service restart behavior is controlled by the unit’s restart policy; on-failure requests a restart when the service exits unsuccessfully. RestartSec=10 sets a delay before that restart. This is not a guarantee of an uninterrupted broadcast: a process that exits successfully is not restarted by this policy, and repeatedly restarting cannot correct invalid credentials, unavailable media, network failures, or a YouTube-side broadcast state. See the systemd service restart implementation.
Some systemd and FFmpeg versions or configurations may not expand variables in ExecStart as expected, and special characters in a key can complicate shell-style concatenation. Verify the exact command and variable handling on your distribution before relying on it. If needed, use a root-owned wrapper script with restricted permissions and carefully controlled secret handling; do not make the key world-readable to work around parsing problems.

4. Enable and start the service
Reload systemd’s unit files, enable the service for the normal multi-user boot target, and start it now:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service
Enabling a service connects it to a boot target so systemd can start it during boot; it does not prove that FFmpeg will connect or that YouTube will show a live broadcast. See the systemd startup-target documentation.
Check that the stream is actually live
Check the local service
Use systemd to inspect whether the process is active and review recent output:

sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager
For ongoing logs, use sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -f. Look for FFmpeg connection or input errors, repeated exits, and permission problems. Do not assume an active service means viewers can see a healthy YouTube broadcast.
Check YouTube Studio
Open the stream in Live Control Room and confirm YouTube receives a preview or reports the stream as live. If a scheduled stream requires a manual go-live action, complete it there. After a reboot or automatic restart, check the preview/live state again; systemd only supervises the local process, not the YouTube broadcast lifecycle.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive threshold is not evidence that a single broadcast can run forever or a reason to impose a particular restart schedule.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Service fails immediately | Incorrect FFmpeg path, unit syntax, unreadable media, or invalid environment file. | Read systemctl status and the service journal. Check ExecStart, file paths, account permissions, and variable handling. |
| FFmpeg cannot open the input | The media path is wrong or the service account lacks read access. | Confirm the file exists and is readable by ytstream; test the input as that account. |
| FFmpeg runs but YouTube receives no preview | Wrong ingest URL or stream key, connection failure, incompatible output, or an unfinished scheduled-stream step. | Re-copy the current server URL and key from YouTube Studio, inspect FFmpeg’s journal output, verify output compatibility, and check Live Control Room for any required action. |
| Service restarts repeatedly | The process is exiting due to a persistent error, such as credentials, media, or network trouble. | Find the first relevant error in the journal and correct its cause. A restart policy repeats attempts; it does not repair the underlying fault. |
| Service is active but the broadcast is not visible | Local process state and YouTube’s preview/live state are different checks. | Inspect Live Control Room and complete any scheduled-stream go-live action; verify again after recovery. |
| Stream key may have been exposed | It appeared in a public repository, transcript, or other accessible location. | Rotate the key in YouTube Studio, update the protected configuration, then restart and verify the service and YouTube preview. |
Choose how to keep the stream running
A self-managed Linux host gives you direct control over FFmpeg and the service configuration, but you are responsible for keeping the host, network, media, credentials, and monitoring in order. Other options include a desktop encoder or dedicated hardware encoder; YouTube documents software and standalone hardware encoder workflows and lists verified encoders, while noting listed products are not made by YouTube. There is no neutral benchmark in the cited material that establishes one approach as best for every channel.
- StreamNeo: An always-on YouTube stream runs from the cloud, supports uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and includes a free first day. See StreamNeo.
- Linux with FFmpeg and systemd: You control the process and can restart it after failures, but must maintain the Linux host and investigate problems that restarts cannot fix.
- Desktop software encoder: YouTube supports software encoders; this approach keeps the encoder on your computer, so the computer and its network connection must remain available while streaming.
- Standalone hardware encoder: YouTube also documents hardware encoder use. Hardware is not necessary for the Linux systemd method in this guide.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video to YouTube from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It does not stream from a camera.
- Each slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account.
- Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
Start your free StreamNeo day.
Copyright and channel considerations
Before looping a recording or playlist, confirm you have the rights needed to use its video and audio on YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow does not make copyrighted or otherwise restricted material safe to rebroadcast. A continuous technical feed also does not guarantee that a channel or its content meets YouTube’s rules or monetization requirements. Review YouTube’s applicable policies for the material and channel; this guide does not establish that a particular playlist is permitted.
