Keep the old path ready for rollback until the new feed is stable. A handoff between unrelated providers can interrupt playback; there is no universal zero-downtime procedure.
What changes—and what stays the same
A cloud migration changes the system that generates, processes, or delivers your live feed. YouTube remains the destination, but its encoder workflow still needs the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Enter those values in the encoder’s stream settings; YouTube’s setup guide describes this connection at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Do not assume that a provider’s resources transfer automatically. For example, Google Cloud Live Stream API uses an input endpoint feeding a channel that processes the input and publishes outputs such as HLS or DASH. A move to that kind of managed pipeline means creating and configuring its input, channel, and output resources separately, as described in the Google Cloud Live Stream API overview.
Choose the kind of migration you need
| Option | Who runs the encoder or processing | Protocols and failover established here | Operational considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Move a cloud-hosted encoder | Your encoder runs on the replacement cloud host; you configure its destination in the encoder. | Depends on the encoder and selected provider; confirm supported input, output, and reconnect behavior in their current documentation. | Usually centers on reproducing the existing host, media, encoder profile, restart behavior, monitoring, and destination credentials. |
| Use a managed cloud video service | The service accepts an encoder input, processes it, and publishes configured outputs. | Google Cloud Live Stream API documents RTMP and SRT input, HLS and DASH outputs, and backup-input configuration. Its documented backup failover behavior is provider-specific. | Requires provider resources and output configuration in addition to the encoder input. Verify region availability, costs, monitoring, reconnection, and retention with the provider. |
The cited documentation does not establish current comparative prices, regional availability guarantees, or a reliability ranking across providers. Assess those for the specific service and region you plan to use.

Prepare the replacement before cutover
- Inventory the current setup. Record the encoder and version, source media and playlists, output resolution and frame rate, codec and bitrate profile, cloud region and resources, protocol, YouTube destination configuration, credential storage, restart behavior, monitoring alerts, and any archive or recording requirements. Store the stream key securely; keep it out of logs, screenshots, and shared runbooks.
- Document the intended output. Note the format and settings the current stream delivers, then compare them with the replacement encoder or service’s supported formats and current provider guidance. Match the existing profile unless you have a deliberate reason to change it; a migration is a poor time to introduce unrelated format changes.
- Create the new cloud path alongside the old one. Provision the replacement host or managed-service resources, select the intended region, configure input and output protocols, and set the delivery destination. For YouTube encoder delivery, use the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room in the encoder’s stream settings. Do not copy credentials into provider logs or broadly accessible documentation.
- Check recovery and observation. Confirm how the new encoder or service reconnects after a dropped input or output, how it restarts after a host or process restart, and where you can see health or alerts. Do not assume the new provider inherits the old provider’s retry policy or monitoring.
- Validate before production handoff. When available, use a provider-supported backup input or a controlled test stream. Check that the new path receives the intended media and produces the expected output before directing production to it. Avoid testing by exposing the production stream key.
Cut over and keep a rollback path
- Choose a controlled handoff window. Tell anyone monitoring the channel when the switch will happen. A 24/7 stream may still experience a visible interruption during an actual provider-to-provider handoff.
- Direct the production feed to the new path. Either change the source feeding the replacement cloud service or update the active encoder’s destination, depending on your architecture. Avoid running two competing production feeds to the same YouTube destination unless your setup explicitly supports that handoff.
- Verify the YouTube side. Open YouTube Live Control Room and check for the incoming preview and stream health. Confirm that the expected content and audio are present, then watch the replacement service’s monitoring for disconnects or output errors.
- Keep the old service available while validating stability. If the new feed fails, restore the prior source or destination using your documented rollback steps. Do not retire the old resources merely because the first preview appeared.
- Complete post-cutover checks. Confirm restart and reconnect behavior, alerts, costs, retention settings, and archive expectations. Retire the former cloud service only after the new path has passed these checks.
Google Cloud Live Stream API: protocol and backup-input details
For Google Cloud’s Live Stream API specifically, an input endpoint accepts RTMP or SRT from an encoder, while a channel processes the input and publishes configured outputs, including HLS or DASH. The service also documents backup input configuration. See the service overview for the pipeline model.
Backup input is not a universal cloud feature
Google Cloud documents automatic failover to a backup input if the primary disconnects, and switching back when the primary returns. Its guide says the primary and backup streams should be identical if the backup is to fully replace the primary. Treat this as behavior of that service, not a promise about other providers or a substitute for testing your own source and output: Configure backup inputs.

SRT versus RTMP on this service
Google recommends SRT over RTMP for its Live Stream API when the encoder supports it, citing packet-drop recovery, forward error correction, multiple audio elementary streams, and higher bandwidth. This is Google’s service-specific recommendation, not a universal requirement for YouTube or every cloud provider. Confirm encoder compatibility before changing protocols. The same page publishes recommended source bitrates by resolution, frame rate, and codec; use the applicable entry for your actual profile rather than treating a single bitrate as a universal YouTube setting: Google Cloud Live Stream API best practices.
Remote output delivery
Google Cloud documents pushing outputs to remote endpoints over RTMP or SRT. The endpoint URI pattern, protocol, and credentials depend on the configured destination and stream setup; confirm them against the remote endpoint distribution guide and the destination’s current instructions.

Archives and recordings need a separate check
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after transmission ends. That statement does not establish the same outcome for streams exceeding 12 hours, so do not assume a 24/7 stream will have a complete archive. Check the current channel workflow and make separate recording or retention arrangements if the archive is operationally important. YouTube’s guidance is in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Common migration problems and fixes
- No incoming preview in Live Control Room: verify that the active encoder uses the current YouTube server URL and stream key, and that the replacement path is actually publishing to that destination. Check the cloud service’s input and output status separately.
- The replacement input works but YouTube receives nothing: inspect the managed service’s output configuration, destination URI, protocol, and credentials. An input endpoint alone does not publish to YouTube.
- Audio or video changes after failover: check that primary and backup feeds are identical in the respects required by the provider. Google specifically says its backup should be identical to the primary for a full replacement.
- Frequent disconnects after changing protocols: verify that the encoder supports the selected protocol and matches the provider’s requirements. Google’s preference for SRT applies to its Live Stream API when the encoder supports it; it does not mean every endpoint accepts SRT.
- The stream stops after a host or process restart: test the replacement’s startup and restart configuration, then verify that the encoder reconnects and the output is restored. Do not rely on the old host’s restart behavior carrying over.
- The stream is live but no archive appears as expected: check the stream duration and the channel’s current archive workflow. YouTube’s cited automatic-archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not a blanket guarantee for longer broadcasts.
- Unexpected charges or missing recordings: check the new provider’s billing, retention, and recording settings directly. The cited service documentation does not provide a cross-provider cost comparison or establish that migration preserves old recordings.
