Python can create a separate scheduled YouTube Live event for each occurrence of a chosen weekday and time. The YouTube Live Streaming API does not define a weekly recurrence rule: your scheduler calculates each date and calls liveBroadcasts.insert for that occurrence. Scheduling an event does not transmit video, and adding videos to a YouTube playlist is a separate operation. So if by “playlist” you mean a set of recordings playing automatically as a live stream, the documented API operations below do not provide that playback workflow.
Decide what you mean by a weekday “playlist”
There are two distinct tasks that can sound like scheduling a playlist:
- Create a recurring event: schedule a new live event every Tuesday, for example. Python can calculate each Tuesday and create one dated YouTube broadcast per occurrence.
- Play recordings as a live program: broadcast videos from a playlist in sequence. Scheduling a broadcast and adding a video to a playlist do not, by themselves, make the playlist play out as a live feed. YouTube documents those as separate operations; this guide covers event scheduling and playlist organization, not automated playlist playout.
A YouTube liveBroadcast is the event, while a liveStream is the feed sent to YouTube. Creating the event does not capture or transmit video. You still need an encoder or another supported way to send a feed when the event starts.
Choose Studio or Python

YouTube says a scheduled stream may appear to viewers as an upcoming event, allowing them to opt into a notification. For a modest schedule, Studio may be less work than maintaining API credentials and a recurring job. YouTube also advises creators to choose a sustainable cadence and communicate it consistently to viewers.

Check channel eligibility and authorization
Before building the scheduler, confirm the channel can go live. YouTube Help guidance says live streaming requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and that the creator be at least 16 years old. Eligibility can still be affected by channel-specific restrictions, so check the channel itself before relying on automation.
The broadcast insertion endpoint requires authorization. Its documented OAuth scopes include youtube and youtube.force-ssl. Use the scope and account access appropriate to the channel, and store OAuth credentials securely rather than embedding them in a script or source repository. The API reference lists errors for invalid scheduling inputs, missing permissions, rate limits, and broadcast limits.

Plan the recurrence in the channel’s local time zone
Pick the weekday, local start time, and an explicit time zone before calculating dates. Do not hard-code one UTC hour if the intended event should remain at the same local clock time through daylight-saving changes. Define what should happen when the chosen local time is skipped or repeated during a daylight-saving transition.
Calculate the next intended local occurrence, convert that aware date-time to an ISO 8601 timestamp, and check that the resulting instant is still in the future. The API reference requires a future scheduled start and notes that the date must be close enough for reliable scheduling; it does not specify a fixed maximum scheduling horizon there. Create events on a rolling basis rather than assuming an unlimited lead time.

Create one scheduled broadcast per occurrence
- Choose event details. Set a title, the computed start time, and an intentional privacy status:
public,private, orunlisted. Check the channel’s Studio settings rather than assuming a privacy default. - Build an authorized API client. Complete YouTube OAuth for an account allowed to manage the channel, and keep its credentials protected.
- Insert the broadcast. Call
liveBroadcasts.insertwith thesnippetandstatusparts. The essential fields aresnippet.title,snippet.scheduledStartTime, andstatus.privacyStatus. - Save the result. Persist the returned broadcast ID and the intended occurrence in durable storage. Before retrying a failed job, check whether that occurrence already has a broadcast, so a rerun does not create duplicate events.
- Run it again for the next date. Your scheduler, not the YouTube endpoint, supplies the weekday recurrence.
The following request shape illustrates the documented fields; it is an implementation outline, not a complete runnable program. It omits OAuth client setup, time-zone policy, persistence, and error handling.

Creating a scheduled event does not start a video encoder or send a feed. Configure and start an encoder or other supported streaming method for the event. YouTube describes stream keys as credentials that tell YouTube where to accept the feed; treat them as secrets, and do not put them in logs or public code. Verify the feed and event status in YouTube’s live controls rather than treating a successful API insertion as proof that video is reaching viewers.

Add completed stream videos to a playlist
If your goal is to organize stream recordings, add a video after it exists. The separate playlistItems.insert method takes the playlist ID and a video resource ID, and requires authorization. Confirm that the video exists and the account can edit the playlist. The API reference documents a quota impact of 50 units per call; this is the endpoint’s per-call quota figure, not a usage or performance estimate.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The insert request rejects the time: check that the timestamp is ISO 8601, includes the intended time-zone offset, and resolves to a future instant. Recalculate after a daylight-saving transition rather than reusing a stale UTC conversion.
- The API says the channel lacks permission: confirm OAuth was granted for the correct channel and the account is eligible to live stream. Reauthorize with an appropriate documented scope if needed.
- A rerun creates duplicate events: make the job idempotent by storing the occurrence date and returned broadcast ID, then check that record before inserting again.
- The event exists but no video appears: the event and feed are separate. Start the encoder or supported feed workflow and confirm it is using the intended stream credentials.
- Playlist insertion fails: validate the playlist ID and video ID, verify editing access, and inspect the API error for unsupported operations or duplicate membership.
- Requests hit a limit: handle rate-limit and broadcast-limit errors with monitoring and controlled retries; do not retry blindly in a way that creates duplicate broadcasts.
