To stream AV1 from OBS to YouTube Live, choose an AV1 encoder your system supports, use RTMPS and CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval, and select the YouTube-recommended bitrate for your resolution and frame rate. Test with representative video and audio before going live, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. The exact AV1 encoder and controls available depend on your hardware, drivers, operating system, and OBS build.

Set up OBS for an AV1 YouTube stream

  1. Confirm AV1 is available. In OBS, open Settings > Output and inspect the streaming encoder options. Choose an AV1 option only if it appears in your installation and your hardware and drivers support it. OBS lists hardware AV1 choices for QSV, AMD, and NVENC, but that does not mean every computer exposes all three. See OBS hardware encoding guidance and the OBS encoder labels.
  2. Use YouTube’s stream destination and key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter the stream key provided in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Select RTMPS when configuring a custom server; YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS transmission. Follow the current YouTube encoder guidance for the ingest protocol and server details.
  3. Set video output. In Settings > Video, choose the output resolution and frame rate you intend to send. In Settings > Output, use CBR (constant bitrate) and enter the recommended AV1 bitrate for that output below. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; YouTube’s stated maximum is four seconds.
  4. Check audio and color. Use AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; for 5.1, it recommends 48 kHz and 384 Kbps, with 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS supported only with AAC. For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit.
  5. Test before the broadcast. Send a test with movement and audio similar to the planned stream. Check YouTube’s stream-health panel and messages while streaming; make sure the actual connection can sustain the selected bitrate.

YouTube’s AV1 bitrate recommendations

These are YouTube-published AV1/H.265 video ingestion figures, not independent performance measurements. Choose the row matching the resolution and frame rate OBS will send. The minimum is a lower bound in YouTube’s table; the recommended value is the target to use when your upload connection can sustain it.

Output Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
2160p60 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
2160p30 8 Mbps 30 Mbps
1440p60 6 Mbps 24 Mbps
1440p30 5 Mbps 15 Mbps
1080p60 4 Mbps 12 Mbps
1080p30 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p60 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p30 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
480p30 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps
360p30 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps

These figures come from YouTube Help’s encoder settings table, accessed 2026-10-03. The same table has separate H.264 recommendations; do not substitute its H.264 column for the AV1/H.265 figures above. YouTube advises choosing a quality your internet connection can reliably support and checking upload speed, but a speed test alone cannot show whether the connection will remain stable under real broadcast conditions. YouTube encoder guidance.

What AV1 options OBS may show

OBS source labels include Hardware (QSV, AV1), Hardware (AMD, AV1), and Hardware (NVENC, AV1). Treat these as possible encoder choices, not a compatibility guarantee. Availability depends on the specific hardware, driver support, operating system, and installed OBS build. If no AV1 option appears, use another encoder supported by your setup or check compatibility information from OBS and your hardware manufacturer before buying equipment.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Some controls and labels are encoder-specific. OBS’s additional NVENC documentation discusses controls introduced with OBS 31.0 and applies to NVENC, not automatically to QSV or AMD. Use CBR for YouTube live ingest wherever the selected encoder exposes rate control, and do not assume one encoder’s menu names or extra options exist in another. OBS NVENC options.

AV1, HDR, and when to choose another codec

YouTube’s cited encoder guidance does not support AV1 for HDR and identifies H.265/HEVC as the HDR video codec. If HDR is required, follow YouTube’s separate HDR setup instructions rather than applying the SDR AV1 settings here. For an SDR broadcast, AV1 is a valid ingest option when OBS and the system expose a compatible encoder.

Codec choice is a practical fit, not a universal quality ranking: check whether your OBS setup exposes the encoder, use the correct YouTube bitrate guidance for the intended output, account for SDR versus HDR, and verify stability with a representative test. This workflow does not establish that AV1 will look better or perform better on every device.

Troubleshoot common AV1 streaming problems

  • No AV1 encoder appears in OBS: Your current hardware, driver, operating system, or OBS setup may not expose one. Check OBS’s hardware encoding guidance and manufacturer compatibility information. Do not assume that installing an OBS update alone will add hardware support.
  • YouTube reports an encoder or connection warning: Confirm the stream is using RTMPS where configured, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (never above YouTube’s four-second maximum), and the AV1/H.265 bitrate for the actual resolution and frame rate. Check YouTube Studio’s stream-health messages for the specific issue.
  • The stream drops frames or becomes unstable: The upload connection may not sustain the chosen bitrate consistently. Test at the intended output settings, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a sustainable YouTube-listed option, and test again. A single speed-test result is not a stability guarantee.
  • HDR is not accepted with AV1: The cited YouTube guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Use YouTube’s HDR-specific instructions and the H.265/HEVC path if HDR is necessary.
  • Audio is missing or incompatible: Check that the RTMP/RTMPS audio codec is AAC or MP3 and that the sample rate and bitrate fit the intended stereo or 5.1 output. YouTube lists AAC as required for 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS.
