If you want a PDF rendered as a document instead of a picture of the page, generate a browser PDF for each URL. Those are different outputs: Playwright screenshots capture the page surface, while its PDF API uses print styling by default.
Choose the output before you automate

A screenshot is not automatically a print-rendered PDF. Playwright supports full-page screenshots with its screenshot API, while page.pdf() generates a document using print CSS media by default. To use screen styling for a PDF, emulate screen media before generating it. See the Playwright screenshot documentation and Page API reference.
Prepare a repeatable batch
- Make a URL list. Store one URL per line in a text file. Decide whether each entry should produce an image, a browser PDF, or an image that will later be assembled into a single PDF.
- Choose capture settings. Settle on viewport dimensions, full-page behavior, image format, resolution, PDF paper size and margins, and whether backgrounds should print.
- Set a filename convention. Use a sequence number or sanitized title so output order is clear and filenames cannot collide. For example,
001-example-com.pngand002-example-org.png. - Test representative pages. Include a short page, a long page, and any page with important charts, images, or overlays. Confirm the output before running the entire list.
Capture bulk full-page screenshots with Playwright
The following Node.js script reads a newline-separated urls.txt, opens each URL in sequence, and writes a full-page PNG for each successful navigation. It uses Chromium through Playwright; install the package and browser before running it:

});Run it with node capture.js. Successful images go into screenshots/; failed URLs and their error messages are written to capture-errors.json. The script processes entries sequentially to keep browser load manageable. The networkidle wait may not suit sites with persistent network activity; if it times out, use an appropriate page-specific wait or a fixed delay after navigation rather than assuming every site becomes idle.
Why the script can still need site-specific work
Automation does not guarantee that every URL can be captured as a visitor would see it. A page may require authentication, a click, consent, a longer wait for client-rendered content, or handling for an anti-bot check. Review the results, particularly long pages and pages with lazy-loaded images or overlays. Playwright documents full-page capture; the loop, naming, and failure log above are application code rather than a built-in bulk workflow.

Generate browser PDFs instead of screenshot images
Choose this when you want document pages, selectable text where the site and browser support it, or pagination controlled by print rules. After navigating to a URL, call page.pdf(). By default Playwright uses print CSS media; set screen media emulation first only if the PDF should match screen styling. The API supports options such as paper format, margins, page ranges, scale, and printing backgrounds. Consult the current Page API reference for the available options and exact behavior.
For a batch, put the navigation and PDF call inside the same URL loop, generating one PDF per URL with a unique filename. If the requested deliverable is one PDF containing screenshot images, this is not equivalent: capture the images and assemble them separately with a PDF-capable tool. Decide the image order, fit or crop behavior, and page break policy during assembly.

Review and troubleshoot the output
- Capture is blank or incomplete: Check whether navigation actually reached the intended page, whether it needs sign-in or interaction, and whether content appears after the chosen wait condition. Test a page-specific selector or delay.
- Images are missing: Some images load lazily as the page scrolls. Review full-page output and determine whether the page needs scrolling or additional waiting before capture.
- Cookie banner, newsletter popup, or chat widget obscures content: The page may require consent or dismissal. Handle it explicitly in the automation and verify whether interacting is appropriate for the site and account.
- Navigation times out: Persistent connections can prevent a network-idle condition. Use a different navigation wait condition, then wait for a meaningful selector or a measured delay when necessary.
- PDF layout differs from the browser: Print CSS is the default for Playwright PDF generation. If screen appearance is desired, emulate screen media before calling the PDF API; also review paper size, margins, scale, and background printing.
- Files overwrite or sort incorrectly: Use a stable sequence prefix and sanitized title or hostname. Keep the original URL list so each file can be traced back to its source.
- One URL fails in a large run: Keep per-URL error logging, continue through the rest of the list, and rerun only failed entries after correcting the cause.
When to consider a hosted capture service
If you run this regularly at scale and would rather not maintain browser automation, compare hosted screenshot APIs. Verify each provider’s support for URL lists, batching, PDF output, combined-PDF assembly, limits, and current terms; these capabilities are not interchangeable.

Does Playwright have one command to export an arbitrary list of URLs as one PDF?
The documented CLI provides screenshot options and a PDF export command, but does not establish a single command that processes an arbitrary bulk URL list into one combined PDF. Use a script to process the list, then assemble outputs if needed.

Can a screenshot preserve a website’s layout better than a PDF?
A full-page screenshot captures the visual page surface as an image. A PDF is laid out as a document and may follow print styles; choose according to whether visual fidelity or document pagination matters more.
