For 1080p60, YouTube recommends 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, and 17 Mbps for H.264. Test with representative audio and motion, then check YouTube’s stream health before relying on a long-running stream.
Recommended YouTube Live settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP or RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS. The appropriate bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a measured performance guarantee for a particular Arc model or playlist setup.

For AV1 at 3840×2160 or higher, YouTube specifies at least two tile columns. Use the applicable YouTube table entry if your target is a different resolution or frame rate.
Choose a codec and bitrate
For the two common 1080p targets below, the figures are YouTube’s stated minimum and recommended video bitrates. Audio is configured separately.

AV1 and HEVC have lower recommended 1080p ingest rates than H.264 in YouTube’s table. That does not establish which codec will look best or run most reliably on your exact Arc card, driver, operating system, and OBS build. Choose a codec available in your installation, then verify the actual output and YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
Set the encoder in OBS
OBS labels and available controls can vary by version, operating system, and installed drivers. The reliable target is to set the stream output to the selected codec and YouTube’s ingest values above; do not assume every Arc system exposes the same options.

- Confirm the target output. Decide whether the playlist should be 1080p30, 1080p60, or another supported resolution and frame rate. Use the corresponding YouTube bitrate recommendation.
- Select an Intel Arc hardware encoder if available. Pick AV1, HEVC, or H.264 according to YouTube’s supported codec list and the options actually presented in OBS. OBS 29.0 release notes document Intel AV1 encoder support for Arc GPUs on Windows. This is a version- and platform-specific compatibility note, not a guarantee for all Arc cards or operating systems.
- Set rate control to CBR. Enter the recommended video bitrate for your chosen codec and output. If network capacity is constrained, test a lower value that remains at or above YouTube’s stated minimum for that mode.
- Set keyframes to 2 seconds. Do not use an interval longer than 4 seconds for this guidance.
- Configure audio. Use AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo, YouTube recommends 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz; for 5.1, use AAC at 384 Kbps and 48 kHz.
- Check color format. For SDR, use Rec. 709. If the stream is HDR, follow YouTube’s HEVC guidance rather than choosing AV1.
- Run a test stream. Use a playlist segment with motion and audio representative of the actual content. Start the stream privately or otherwise test without treating it as a public event, then review OBS’s output and YouTube’s stream-health messages before scheduling the real stream.
OBS 29.1 release notes added streaming AV1/HEVC over Enhanced RTMP and described YouTube support as a beta feature at that time. The release notes document what those versions introduced; they do not establish current availability in every combination of OBS, YouTube account, operating system, and driver.
Intel Arc compatibility and low-bitrate checks
Intel lists OBS as a supported Stream Assist application on eligible Arc systems, with an 11th-, 12th-, or 13th-generation Intel CPU and a discrete Arc GPU specified for Stream Assist. Stream Assist is a distinct feature and should not be treated as a blanket guarantee that Arc AV1 streaming works on every system.

Intel’s support article “OBS Streaming Bitrate Low for AV1 Encoding,” last reviewed March 19, 2025, describes unusually low AV1 streaming bitrate for the Arc A380, A370M, and A350M, and says Intel is aware of the issue. That report is specific to the listed models and may change as software and drivers change. If you use one of them, check the bitrate OBS is actually producing and YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming the configured value is being delivered.
Troubleshoot a playlist stream
- YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate: Confirm CBR and the intended bitrate in OBS, then inspect the outgoing rate and YouTube stream-health status. Check the network connection and test at a lower supported resolution or frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the selected rate.
- AV1 output is far below the configured rate: Verify the active encoder and OBS output rather than just the saved setting. If your card is an Arc A380, A370M, or A350M, account for Intel’s model-specific low-bitrate issue article and retest after checking applicable OBS and driver updates.
- AV1 or HEVC is missing from OBS: The documented Arc AV1 support in OBS 29.0 is for Windows. Check your OBS version, operating system, Arc driver, and encoder options; the cited compatibility notes do not establish availability on every setup.
- The stream has video but no usable audio: Verify the audio codec and sample rate, and ensure the audio source is active in OBS. For 5.1, use AAC; YouTube’s guidance does not list MP3 for 5.1.
- HDR does not work with AV1: YouTube’s guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR and recommends HEVC for HDR. For SDR, use Rec. 709.
- The video looks choppy or the stream health warns about delivery: Test with motion similar to the playlist, confirm frame rate and keyframe interval, and monitor YouTube’s messages. A static test image will not reveal the same issues as moving content.
Copyright and playlist readiness
Encoder settings do not grant rights to stream playlist content. Before a public or continuous broadcast, confirm that you have permission to use the video, music, and other material, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules. A playlist that technically loops can still trigger copyright claims or face restrictions; validate the content rights independently of the encoder setup.
