To create a PDF invoice from HTML, populate a semantic HTML template with your application’s invoice data, apply print-specific CSS, and render it with a browser PDF API such as Puppeteer. Keep calculations in application code, then check the PDF using realistic invoices and the paper size your users need. A PDF is a visual document; it does not automatically meet structured e-invoicing requirements.
Choose a rendering approach
For an application you control, a browser renderer such as Puppeteer lets you render HTML with print CSS and configure the resulting PDF. Puppeteer’s Page.pdf() uses print media by default and supports paper format, margins, headers and footers, background printing, page ranges, and CSS page sizing behavior. A hosted option is Adobe PDF Services’ HTML-to-PDF API, which documents inputs including static or dynamic HTML, ZIP, and URL. See Adobe’s HTML-to-PDF documentation. Before choosing a hosted service, check its current pricing, limits, authentication, privacy and data-residency terms, rendering behavior, and latency. The cited documentation does not establish that hosted conversion and a browser you operate produce equivalent results.

Build the invoice from authoritative data
Keep invoice values in your application’s data model, rather than relying on the rendered page to calculate them. Typical inputs include seller and buyer details, invoice identifier and date, line items, quantities, unit prices, applicable tax values, discounts, totals, and payment instructions. Which fields are required depends on the jurisdiction and transaction; there is no universal checklist established here. Verify requirements for the places and customers you serve.

Render the values into a semantic HTML document. Use a clear reading order and a table for line items, with distinct labels for subtotals, taxes, discounts, and the amount due. Escape or safely encode untrusted values before inserting them into HTML; otherwise user-controlled content could be interpreted as markup or script.
Calculate and validate arithmetic in application code. The renderer should present values, not determine the financial rules. Keep currency formatting and rounding consistent with the calculation and applicable business requirements.
Add print styles and page settings
Screen layouts do not necessarily print well. Use a print stylesheet to remove navigation and interactive controls, adjust typography and spacing, and arrange the invoice for paper or PDF output. MDN documents the print media type and @page rules for page dimensions, orientation, and margins in its printing guide.

}Choose the page size for your users rather than assuming one is universal. Puppeteer lists Letter as its default format and supports A4 and other named formats. You can set a format in Page.pdf() or define sizing with CSS; when using both, decide whether the API option or CSS page size should take precedence.

Generate the PDF with Puppeteer
Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project using its documented installation process, then render a page containing the invoice HTML. This example assumes invoiceHtml is already populated with safely encoded values and that the appropriate browser is available in the deployment environment.

Puppeteer’s documentation says PDF generation waits for document.fonts.ready by default. If the PDF needs headers or footers, page ranges, or different margins, configure those through the documented Page.pdf() options.
Validate layout, calculations, and delivery
Open generated PDFs in the viewers and workflows your recipients actually use. Test more than a short, ordinary invoice; layout failures often surface only with unusually long or dense content.

- Many line items and descriptions that wrap across lines.
- Tax, discounts, and currency formats used by your business.
- Totals close to page boundaries and invoices that span multiple pages.
- Fonts, logos, and other assets loading in the production environment.
- The chosen paper size, margins, backgrounds, headers, and footers.
Check that all content is visible and readable, totals are not separated confusingly from the line items, and the PDF opens as expected. Reconcile totals against your application’s calculation independently of the displayed page. These are practical validation steps, not a claim that any renderer handles every layout case without adjustment.

After validation, use your application’s normal document-handling controls to store, deliver, or attach the PDF. Avoid sending customer invoice data to a third-party conversion service unless its use is permitted by your organization’s privacy and security requirements.

A PDF is not automatically an e-invoice
A PDF generated from HTML is a visual document. In the context of Directive 2014/55/EU, the European Commission defines an eInvoice as structured data that allows automatic and electronic processing, and says unstructured PDF invoices and HTML invoices are not eInvoices under that definition. See the Commission’s eInvoicing guidance.
The Commission’s standards guidance describes EN 16931’s semantic data model as defining core invoice business terms, their meanings, and rules for their use. See the European Commission’s eInvoicing standards information. If a customer, procurement process, or law requires structured e-invoicing, generate the required structured payload and transmission alongside or instead of a human-readable PDF as applicable. The relevant obligation depends on jurisdiction and use case; verify it with the appropriate local requirements.

Can an HTML invoice PDF satisfy every e-invoicing requirement?
