Choose a headless browser when the PDF should reproduce a web page as a browser prints it, a document renderer such as WeasyPrint when you need document-oriented PDF features, or a managed API when you want to outsource rendering infrastructure. No approach is a universal winner: test candidates against your own pages, output requirements, deployment constraints, and security needs.

How the three approaches differ

Approach What it does Most relevant when Tradeoffs to assess
Headless browser, such as Puppeteer or Playwright Loads a page in a browser engine and creates a PDF using print CSS by default. The target is a live or JavaScript-rendered page, and browser print behavior is a suitable output model. Browser installation and runtime, version management, concurrency, resource use, print styles, and color handling.
Dedicated HTML/CSS renderer, such as WeasyPrint Renders HTML and CSS as a document-oriented PDF; its documented output can include hyperlinks, bookmarks, attachments, and forms. You need structured documents and its supported HTML/CSS and pagination behavior match your templates. Verify exact CSS support, pagination, and fonts. Rendering can change across versions, so regression checks matter.
Managed API Accepts HTML or a URL and returns a PDF, according to provider descriptions. You prefer to delegate rendering infrastructure rather than deploy and operate it yourself. Review security, privacy, data location, availability, limits, cost at expected volume, failure behavior, and provider lock-in.

The headless-browser and WeasyPrint descriptions above follow their official documentation. The API model is also described by Doppio, but that is vendor-authored material, not an independent evaluation.

Choose based on the output you need

Use a headless browser for browser-rendered pages

Puppeteer and Playwright expose page-to-PDF methods. Both use print CSS media by default, so a PDF can differ from what a user sees on screen. Their documentation also notes that colors may be adjusted for printing. If screen media is required, Puppeteer documents emulating screen media before calling page.pdf(); for print-accurate colors, its documentation points to -webkit-print-color-adjust.

Playwright’s PDF options include paper format (Letter by default), margins, header and footer templates, page ranges, background graphics, scale, and preferCSSPageSize. Its documentation warns that scripts in header and footer templates are not evaluated and that page styles are not visible inside those templates. Confirm these behaviors against your intended output rather than assuming a screen capture and PDF are interchangeable.

Evaluate a document renderer for structured PDFs

WeasyPrint documents PDF hyperlinks, bookmarks, attachments, and forms. Those features make it worth evaluating for document-oriented output, provided its HTML/CSS support fits the templates you actually use. Its versioning documentation warns that rendering may change between releases even when the API remains stable. Keep representative documents in visual and functional regression checks when upgrading.

Consider an API when operating the renderer is the problem

A hosted service can shift rendering infrastructure out of your application, but it does not remove the need to evaluate the result. Check what content is transmitted, how it is stored and processed, where it is handled, what limits and failure modes apply, and how recurring cost behaves at your volume. A vendor’s claims about its own service should not be treated as neutral comparative evidence.

Benchmark before committing

There is no neutral controlled comparison here that establishes a universal winner on speed, output size, or cost. Compare shortlisted approaches using the same production-like pages and acceptance criteria. Include pages with the JavaScript, fonts, images, long content, and pagination patterns that matter in your application.

One vendor-published benchmark offers a useful example of why results need context. PDF4.dev reports tests comparing Puppeteer v23 and WeasyPrint 68: for its complex document it reports a 58 ms warm Puppeteer render and output sizes of 21 KB for WeasyPrint versus 197 KB for Puppeteer; it reports an approximately 280 MB Chromium installation footprint versus approximately 30–50 MB for its stated Python/Pango/Cairo setup. The same benchmark reports cold simple renders of 147 ms for Puppeteer and 227 ms for WeasyPrint, cold complex renders of 187 ms and 629 ms respectively, and simple output sizes of 18 KB and 8 KB. These are figures from that source’s workloads, not general performance guarantees. See the PDF4.dev benchmark comparison for its methodology and context.

Example: generate a PDF with Playwright

This Node.js example opens a URL, waits for the page to load, and writes a PDF. Install Playwright and its browser runtime in your project environment first; the precise browser-install procedure depends on your Playwright setup. The API’s options and behavior are documented in the Playwright Page API.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
    const pdf = await page.pdf({
      format: 'A4',
      printBackground: true,
      margin: { top: '18mm', right: '16mm', bottom: '18mm', left: '16mm' }
    });
    require('node:fs').writeFileSync('page.pdf', pdf);
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

Replace the sample URL and paper settings with your requirements. If the page never reaches network idle because it keeps polling or holding open connections, select a different readiness condition and wait explicitly for the content your PDF needs. For a specific paper size, margins, page range, background, or CSS-defined page sizing, set the corresponding documented option and verify the produced file.

Troubleshooting a browser-generated PDF

The PDF looks different from the page on screen

Check whether print CSS is hiding, resizing, or restyling elements. Browser PDF methods use print media by default. If you need screen styling, use the browser’s documented media emulation before PDF generation; if print is intended, adjust print styles and inspect the resulting pages.

Backgrounds or colors are missing or altered

Confirm that background printing is enabled in the PDF options. Puppeteer notes that print colors may be modified by default and documents -webkit-print-color-adjust for exact colors. Test the CSS and output in the browser version you deploy.

Content is missing or cut off

Make the page readiness condition match the application. A navigation event alone may not mean asynchronous content, images, or fonts are ready. Wait for a meaningful selector or another application-specific signal, then review page breaks and margins. For a renderer other than a browser, verify support for the CSS and pagination rules involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Header or footer content does not behave as expected

In Playwright’s documented header and footer templates, scripts are not evaluated and page styles are not visible. Put required markup and styling in the supported template itself, and confirm the option settings in the version you use.

An upgrade changes pagination or appearance

Pin the renderer or browser version where reproducibility matters, and run representative PDF regression checks before upgrading. This is especially important with WeasyPrint, whose documentation explicitly warns that rendering can change across versions.

Operational and cost questions to settle

For self-hosted options, account for installing and updating the runtime, concurrency and resource limits, and the work of diagnosing failed pages. For a managed API, compare provider terms, data handling, reliability commitments, usage limits, and the total cost at expected volume. The cited documentation describes technical behavior and options; it does not establish a neutral cost or performance ranking across the three approaches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an HTML-to-PDF library run JavaScript?

It depends on the specific renderer. Browser-based methods render through a browser engine; verify the capabilities of any dedicated renderer against your pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does PDF generation preserve the page’s screen colors automatically?

Not necessarily. Browser PDF APIs use print media by default, and documentation notes that print color handling can differ from screen rendering.

Which approach has the smallest output PDF?

There is no general answer. Output size depends on the document and configuration; compare representative files from your own workload.
