Multicloud means using cloud services from at least two providers. Hybrid cloud means combining a private or on-premises environment with public cloud resources. They describe different aspects of an architecture, so a business can use both at once: that arrangement is commonly called hybrid multicloud.

What is the difference between multicloud and hybrid cloud?

Question Hybrid cloud Multicloud
What defines it? A private or on-premises environment combined with public cloud resources. AWS’s deployment definition specifies an organization’s own on-premises data center and at least one cloud provider. Services used across at least two cloud service providers.
What is the key boundary? Private or on-premises infrastructure connected with public cloud. The number of cloud providers, regardless of whether private or on-premises infrastructure is also used.
Common reason to consider it Keep or integrate existing systems, process data locally, meet latency or residency needs, plan continuity, or migrate in stages. Use provider-specific capabilities or meet a requirement that one provider alone cannot satisfy.
Main operating question How will cloud systems connect securely and reliably with private or on-premises systems? Which workloads need to work across providers, and what skills, tools, governance, and integration will that require?
Can the approaches coexist? Yes. A hybrid design may include one or more public cloud providers. Yes. Multiple cloud providers plus private or on-premises infrastructure make a hybrid multicloud arrangement.

AWS and Google Cloud describe multicloud in terms of using services from multiple providers, while AWS and Google Cloud describe hybrid cloud around the private/public boundary. Google Cloud notes that terminology can vary between organizations; use these definitions when comparing architectures (AWS’s multicloud overview, AWS deployment strategies, and Google Cloud architecture guidance).

How to tell which architecture a business has

Count cloud providers to identify multicloud

If a business uses services from two or more cloud providers, it is multicloud under the definition used here. The workloads do not necessarily need to communicate with each other; they may be separate applications operated by separate teams. The important point is that the organization uses multiple providers.

Check for a private or on-premises environment to identify hybrid

If the architecture combines public cloud with a private environment—such as the organization’s own data center—it is hybrid. A business using one public provider and its own data center can therefore be hybrid without being multicloud.

Recognize when both labels apply

A business using multiple cloud providers as well as private or on-premises infrastructure is both multicloud and hybrid. Google Cloud calls this combination hybrid and multicloud. The labels are not competing choices: one describes provider count, while the other describes the relationship between public cloud and private or on-premises resources.

When should a business consider hybrid cloud?

Hybrid cloud is worth considering when a business has a concrete reason to keep or connect some systems outside public cloud. AWS lists ongoing migration, business continuity, low-latency applications, and international expansion among hybrid-cloud use cases in its whitepaper, published November 5, 2020 (Hybrid Cloud with AWS).

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Gradual migration: Move applications or data in stages rather than requiring every system to move at once.
  • Local processing or low latency: Keep processing close to devices, users, or systems when the application’s needs make location important.
  • Continuity planning: Integrate environments as part of a business continuity or disaster-recovery approach. Hybrid infrastructure does not itself guarantee continuity; the design and tested recovery procedures matter.
  • Residency constraints: Keep particular data or workloads in a required location while using public cloud elsewhere. Confirm that the actual architecture and provider services meet the applicable requirements.
  • Existing systems: Connect public cloud resources to infrastructure that the organization still needs to operate privately or on premises.

These are reasons to evaluate hybrid architecture, not proof that it is automatically cheaper, safer, or better for every workload. The private/public connection itself must be secured, monitored, and kept reliable.

When should a business consider multicloud?

Multicloud can make sense when a workload has a technical or business requirement that one provider cannot meet adequately, or when a specific provider capability is important. Data-sovereignty requirements may also be a consideration. AWS cautions that adding providers brings additional people, skills, training, tools, integration, and interoperability work; its guidance is to reserve multicloud for workloads that cannot meet their requirements through one provider, and to weigh benefits against that investment (AWS Prescriptive Guidance on multicloud).

Questions to answer before adding another provider

  • What specific workload requirement does the additional provider meet?
  • Does that workload need to share data or coordinate operations with systems in another cloud?
  • Who will own identity, access control, security policy, monitoring, incident response, and cost governance across providers?
  • What data-transfer, integration, and interoperability work will the design require?
  • Can the requirement be met with the current provider without unacceptable trade-offs?
  • Do the expected benefits justify the ongoing operational investment?

Multicloud can be deliberate, but it can also emerge when teams choose providers independently. In either case, map which services are used where and assign clear ownership; simply having multiple cloud accounts does not make their operation coordinated.

Can hybrid cloud and multicloud be used together?

Yes. For example, a company could keep a database in its own data center, run an application in one public cloud, and use a service from another public cloud. That is hybrid because private infrastructure is combined with public cloud, and multicloud because services come from at least two providers.

For a hybrid multicloud design, make two plans rather than treating it as one decision: first define how private and public environments connect, then decide which workloads genuinely need to span or use multiple providers. A workload can use a second provider without being tightly integrated with every other environment, but any required data exchange and shared operations need an explicit design.

Common misconceptions and trade-offs

Multicloud does not automatically prevent vendor lock-in

Using more than one provider may give an organization more choice, but it does not by itself make applications portable. Workloads may rely on provider-specific services, and moving data or redesigning systems can require substantial work.

Multicloud does not automatically make systems more resilient

Multiple providers can be part of a resilience strategy, but provider count alone does not establish that an application will fail over successfully. The organization must design, operate, and test the recovery path.

Hybrid cloud adds a boundary to manage

Hybrid architectures need secure, dependable connections and clear operating practices across private or on-premises systems and public cloud. The benefits of retaining local infrastructure must be weighed against that integration and management work.

More providers add operational overhead

Multicloud expands the set of provider-specific skills, tools, policies, and integrations an organization may need. It is most defensible when a defined requirement or benefit warrants that complexity—not simply because using several providers sounds more flexible.

Choose by requirement, not by label

Start with the constraint the architecture must solve. If a system needs to remain private or on premises while using public cloud, evaluate hybrid cloud. If a workload needs capabilities from multiple providers, evaluate multicloud. If both conditions apply, plan for hybrid multicloud and account for the integration and operating burden of each boundary.
