The documented ShrinkTheWeb PHP example is a Drupal 8 integration pattern, not a verified current standalone PHP API. The guide was last updated on March 4, 2019, and ShrinkTheWeb’s homepage currently says “Relaunching Soon!” As of October 3, 2026, the available public information does not confirm that the API, account setup, or old credentials are usable. Check current official documentation before building against it.
What the historical PHP integration actually covers
ShrinkTheWeb provides website screenshots and thumbnail images. The concrete PHP instructions available are part of a Drupal 8 guide, rather than a current general-purpose PHP SDK or documented HTTP API. They explain how a Drupal site could configure account credentials, cache thumbnails, and render screenshot images.
The guide’s basic example uses a Drupal render array with a target URL and the theme key shrinktheweb_image. Its advanced example supplies options on an individual render array, allowing a particular image request to differ from the module’s global settings. These examples depend on Drupal’s module and rendering conventions; they should not be copied as if they were a generic PHP client or current API request.
Historical Drupal setup and configuration
The March 4, 2019 guide describes this sequence:
- Register for a ShrinkTheWeb account and retrieve the access and secret keys from the account profile, as the guide then described.
- In Drupal’s administration area, configure those keys for the ShrinkTheWeb module.
- Choose a folder for cached thumbnail images and, optionally, set how many days a cached image remains unchanged.
- Use the module’s formatter or a render array to display the screenshot associated with a target URL.
The guide notes that some additional request features may require an upgraded account. It does not establish whether that account flow, those credentials, or the entitlements still exist.

Global settings or per-image options?

The advanced example lists these historical option names: custom_width, full_length, max_height, native_resolution, widescreen_resolution_y, delay, and quality. The guide associates them with width, full-page capture, maximum crop height, viewport dimensions, delay, and image quality. It also says that capturing inside pages may depend on an “Inside Pages” upgrade. Treat these as names and capabilities documented at that time, not confirmed current parameters or plan features.
Current availability and maintenance status
The official ShrinkTheWeb homepage currently displays “Relaunching Soon!” That does not prove that every existing account or API request is offline, but it does mean the public site does not clearly confirm operational availability. The 2019 guide cannot establish a current endpoint, request signature, authentication or TLS requirements, supported PHP version, quota, pricing, India-specific billing or support terms, or compatibility with modern Drupal.

Drupal.org marks the ShrinkTheWeb module unsupported and obsolete, with no supported stable releases; its project page says it appeared no longer supported as of January 31, 2022. Do not make this module a new production dependency without independently verifying that it is maintained and compatible with your Drupal and PHP versions.

- The current endpoint, authentication method, request parameters, response format, and error behavior.
- Current account plans, limits, pricing, and payment options available in India.
- Where submitted URLs and generated images are processed or stored, and the applicable data-handling terms.
- Whether a maintained client library exists for your PHP version, or whether a documented HTTP API is intended for direct use.
- How thumbnail caching, refreshes, and any notification callbacks work now.
A 2014 company sample-code announcement quotes ShrinkTheWeb CEO Brandon Elliott describing the historical Account API: “The best integrations also take advantage of the “Account API”, which allows the integration to instantly detect the user’s account level and upgraded features.” This is a historical statement, not evidence that the Account API remains available.

Can I use the old ShrinkTheWeb Drupal example as a standalone PHP API call?
No. It uses Drupal render arrays and a module theme key; it is not a documented generic PHP client or current HTTP request.
