On Windows, change the lid-close action so closing the lid does not put the laptop to sleep. On a Mac, the documented closed-lid setup is intended for use with an external display and requires power, an external keyboard, and a mouse; a sleep-prevention setting alone is not guaranteed to override lid-close behavior on every model. The exact steps depend on your computer and operating system.
Windows: change what closing the lid does
Windows lets you set separate lid actions for battery power and plugged-in use. Choose an action that does not put the laptop to sleep for the power state in which you want the YouTube yoga stream to continue.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select System and Security, then Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- Set the lid action separately under On battery and Plugged in. For each state where you want playback to continue, choose an action that does not put the PC to sleep.
- Select Save changes.
Microsoft notes that available options can depend on the PC and its manufacturer. If the lid controls are missing or behave differently, check the laptop maker’s documentation for your model. See Microsoft’s steps for changing what happens when you close the lid.
Windows 11 screen and sleep timeouts are separate
To adjust idle display or sleep timing in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. These timeout controls do not replace the lid-close action: if closing the lid itself causes sleep, change that action in Control Panel as described above. Mac: distinguish sleep prevention from closed-display use
Apple documents closed-lid use for a Mac laptop connected to an external display. Its instructions call for connecting the Mac to power and using an external keyboard and mouse. This is Apple’s closed-display setup, not a guaranteed way to keep every Mac playing a video with no external display. Check Apple’s guidance for troubleshooting an external display and confirm accessory compatibility for your Mac.
Check the power-adapter sleep setting
In the Mac battery settings, Apple documents Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. This may be relevant when the Mac is connected to power, but Apple also notes that settings and connected devices can affect sleep and wake behavior. Do not assume this option by itself overrides lid-close behavior on every Mac. For details, see Apple’s article on unexpected Mac sleep or wake.
Check the result safely
- Save your work before testing a lid-close setting.
- Test with the power state you intend to use: battery and plugged-in behavior can be configured separately on Windows.
- Confirm whether the computer is still awake and whether the YouTube video continues after you close the lid. A setting that keeps the computer awake does not guarantee uninterrupted playback if the network, browser, or stream itself stops.
- If a control is unavailable or the behavior does not match the setting, consult the computer manufacturer’s documentation using the exact model and OS version.
