Use the first route for an existing chart and the second when you need repeatable, automated report generation. In either case, check the finished PDF at its intended page size for legibility, clipping, and accessibility.
Choose the right workflow
| Workflow | Best for | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| Export an Office document | A chart already in Excel or PowerPoint | The chart and document layout in the source application, followed by PDF export settings |
| Generate a PDF programmatically | Automated reports or charts built from data in code | Chart geometry and placement on the PDF page |
Microsoft documents PDF export for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. ReportLab documents a separate approach: create chart and drawing objects, then render them into a PDF. The right choice depends on whether the chart already exists in an Office document and how much layout and automation control you need.
Export an existing Excel or PowerPoint chart
Prepare the source before export
Make the chart clear in its original workbook or presentation first. Give it a meaningful title, use readable axis labels and legends, and make sure the chart fits the intended page or slide layout. Microsoft recommends applying accessibility practices in the source file before exporting. Its Excel guidance describes PDF tags for workbook ranges and tables, and graphics marked as artifacts; a chart’s appearance alone should not be assumed to communicate its data accessibly. Microsoft’s Excel accessible-PDF guidance explains its recommended preparation and export steps.
Export and verify the PDF
Use the PDF export feature in the Office application holding the chart, then open the resulting PDF rather than relying only on the export dialog preview. Microsoft describes export for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in its PDF accessibility overview. The exact controls can vary by application and version.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For PowerPoint automation, Microsoft documents Presentation.ExportAsFixedFormat3; PDF/UA tags are included only when DocStructureTags=True. Check that option when using the method and inspect the output; do not assume all export settings produce equivalent tagged PDFs. Microsoft’s method reference documents the setting.
Generate a chart directly in a PDF with ReportLab
For reports produced from code, ReportLab Graphics provides chart and drawing objects that can be rendered to PDF. Its documentation includes chart components such as line charts and describes drawings that render to PDF or bitmap output. This keeps the chart as vector content in the PDF, which can preserve crisp lines at different scales. See the ReportLab User Guide and its chart documentation for the library’s APIs and examples.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
ReportLab’s lower-level pdfgen canvas offers direct page placement. The coordinate origin is at the lower-left by default, with measurements in points. Set a page size deliberately and reserve space for the chart title, axes, tick labels, and legend; otherwise those elements can run into margins or be clipped. The user guide also notes that inline bitmaps may be inefficient when the same image is repeated.
The relevant ReportLab documentation describes the drawing and canvas workflows, but it does not establish a universal DPI threshold for raster charts. If using a bitmap, judge its quality at the final PDF display or print size.

Choose vector output or a chart image
- Prefer vector output when readers may zoom or the PDF will be printed at different sizes. ReportLab describes its charts as vectors in PDF, supporting sharp lines and small file sizes.
- Use a raster image when the chart is already an image or that format suits your workflow. Its final legibility depends on the source image and how large it appears in the PDF.
- Whichever format you choose, check small text, thin lines, labels, and colors at the page size your audience will actually use.
Check legibility and accessibility
- Give the chart a meaningful title and ensure labels and legends remain readable at the intended page size.
- Open the exported or generated PDF and look for clipped labels, missing fonts, changed colors, and unwanted page breaks.
- For Office exports, follow accessibility practices in the source workbook or presentation, then verify the PDF and its tags. Microsoft’s documentation describes tagging and export settings; it does not guarantee that every chart is automatically accessible.
- If the chart carries a central message, explain its essential takeaway in surrounding text. Consider also providing a data table or equivalent explanation so the information is not available only through the visual.
Troubleshoot common chart-to-PDF problems
Labels or legends are cut off
Inspect the PDF page boundaries and the chart’s placement. In a programmatic layout, reserve more room for the title, axes, labels, and legend; in an Office document, adjust the source layout and export again.
The chart looks blurry when enlarged
A raster chart may lose clarity when scaled beyond its source resolution. Where your workflow supports it, use vector chart output; otherwise, use a sufficiently clear image for the final display or print size.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The chart looks fine but is difficult to use with assistive technology
Do not treat visual appearance as proof of accessibility. Apply the source application’s accessibility practices and check the PDF’s tagging and reading structure. For the documented PowerPoint automation method, verify that DocStructureTags=True when PDF/UA tags are required.
Repeated images make a generated PDF inefficient
ReportLab’s guide warns that inline bitmaps can be inefficient when the same image is repeated. If the PDF repeats a chart image, review the generation approach and consult the guide’s canvas and image-handling documentation.

If what you need is a screenshot or PDF capture of a web page containing a chart, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request API. It is not a replacement for exporting a chart from an Office document or generating a data-driven chart in ReportLab; it captures a web page.
For example, this cURL request captures a page as a PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for PDF options and other parameters.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -d format=pdf -o page.pdf
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan to get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I export an Excel chart as a PDF?
Prepare the workbook using accessibility practices, export it to PDF from Excel, then open the PDF to check the chart layout and tags. Microsoft’s Excel accessible-PDF guidance is linked above.
Should I use a vector chart or an image in a PDF?
Use vector output when crisp scaling or printing matters and your chart workflow supports it. An image is suitable when the chart already exists as a bitmap, but inspect it at the size readers will see.
