A cloud-hosted YouTube playlist shows “Stream offline” when YouTube’s public watch page is not receiving a playable live feed, or when the scheduled event has not been taken live. Start by checking the cloud job and its output, then confirm the YouTube event, stream URL and key, Live Control Room preview, and whether the workflow requires you to click Go live. A scheduled event existing is not the same as an active stream.
Why is my YouTube live stream offline?
The message alone does not identify the fault. It can reflect a problem sending video to YouTube, a mismatch between the cloud job and the intended event, or an event that is receiving a feed but has not been started for viewers. Use Live Control Room to distinguish these cases: its preview indicates whether YouTube is receiving an incoming stream, while the public watch page shows whether the event is live and accessible.
The checks below apply to cloud-hosted playlist workflows generally. The cloud provider, ingest protocol, job logs, and exact point when the screen appears are not specified, so a particular cause cannot be diagnosed from the message alone.
Diagnose the offline screen by what you see
No preview in Live Control Room
- Open the intended event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check whether a preview appears.
- In the cloud host, confirm the playlist job is active and producing an outbound feed. Check the job’s output state or logs if available; the precise labels vary by provider.
- Verify the job targets the intended YouTube event and uses the correct server URL and ingest protocol, along with the current stream key. YouTube describes a stream key as like a stream’s “password and address,” and directs creators to enter it in their encoder: Manage live stream settings.
- If the key may have been reset or exposed, update the cloud job with the current key. YouTube documents how to reset a stream key in its settings guidance.
If the job reports that it is running but YouTube has no preview, that status alone does not prove a feed is reaching YouTube. Check the host’s output details and the destination settings rather than assuming the public player is the only problem.

Preview appears, but the public player says offline
- Confirm the preview is attached to the same event whose watch page you are opening. A different scheduled event can receive the feed while the page you checked remains offline.
- Check whether the event workflow requires a manual start. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to wait for the Live Control Room preview and then click Go live: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Check the event’s privacy and access settings, then test the intended watch page. YouTube recommends verifying that the event is accessible: Live streaming tips.
A preview confirms that YouTube is receiving a feed; it does not by itself establish that the event is live to viewers.
The stream was live, then dropped
Check when the offline screen began, then inspect the cloud job’s uptime and output logs around that time. Confirm whether the host is still sending output and whether Live Control Room still receives it. These are diagnostic checks, not evidence of a specific cloud provider’s behavior: the provider and its log format are unknown. If the host has stopped or lost output, use its documented recovery steps; if output continues but YouTube no longer previews it, recheck the destination URL, key, and protocol.

The feed uses HLS
Only apply these checks if the cloud host sends HLS. YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance specifies HTTPS, MPEG-TS segments, segment durations of 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Check the sender against YouTube’s current requirements: Use HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). Do not apply HLS segment settings to an RTMP or RTMPS feed.
Check channel eligibility if live streaming was just enabled
If this channel is new to live streaming, confirm that it is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Prevent the offline screen before a scheduled event
YouTube recommends configuring encoder streams at least two hours ahead and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Use that lead time to check both the cloud sender and YouTube’s view of the feed: Live streaming tips.
- Open the intended event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Confirm that the cloud playlist job is running and its outbound feed is active.
- Check that the job uses the intended YouTube stream URL and current stream key.
- Wait for the Live Control Room preview and confirm that it shows the expected video and audio.
- Click Go live if the workflow requires it, then check that the intended watch page shows the active event.
- If the feed uses HLS, validate its settings against YouTube’s HLS requirements.

What to send support for a specific diagnosis
If the checks do not reveal the cause, give the cloud host’s support team or YouTube support enough detail to separate a sender problem from an event-state problem:

- The cloud host’s name and whether its playlist job reports active output.
- Whether Live Control Room shows a preview, and whether the public watch page is the same event.
- Whether the feed uses RTMP(S) or HLS, if known.
- When the offline screen first appeared: before any preview, after preview but before going live, or after the stream had been running.
- Relevant cloud output-log details, with the stream key removed. Treat the key as a password; do not include it in a support message.
