PPI measures how many image pixels fit into each inch of a chosen physical size; DPI measures the dots a printer places or renders per inch. For a print, the image’s pixel dimensions and final size determine its effective PPI. Printer DPI describes a separate part of the output process, so 300 DPI and 300 PPI are not interchangeable specifications.

What do PPI and DPI mean?

PPI: pixels per inch

PPI describes the density of digital image pixels relative to a physical inch. It is useful when relating an image’s pixel dimensions to its intended print size. Adobe gives the calculation as: number of pixels divided by image size in inches equals pixels per inch. Adobe’s guide to image size and resolution explains the relationship.

DPI: dots per inch

DPI describes physical output dots per inch from a printer. Those dots are not the same thing as the source image’s pixels. Printer technology and output settings determine how the printer renders an image; Adobe notes that printer resolution affects printed detail but is not the same as image resolution. Adobe’s printer-resolution guide, last updated February 23, 2026, discusses the distinction.

People and some software use “DPI” loosely when they mean image PPI. When precision matters, identify whether a number refers to the digital image, printer output, or another print setting.

How do you calculate effective PPI for a print?

Divide the image’s pixel count along a dimension by the intended print dimension in inches. For example, a 3,000-pixel-wide image printed 10 inches wide has 300 effective PPI (3,000 ÷ 10). Printed 20 inches wide, the same image has 150 effective PPI (3,000 ÷ 20). This calculation describes pixel density at the chosen size; it does not guarantee a particular visual result.

Image quality also depends on the detail actually captured, the output process, viewing conditions and other image factors. Ask the print provider or consult the device documentation when a specific printer or process has its own recommendations. If you are choosing an inkjet photo printer, compare devices against your print needs and follow the manufacturer’s guidance rather than treating the printer’s DPI as a required image PPI.

Is 300 DPI the same as 300 PPI?

No. A 300 PPI image has 300 image pixels per inch at its specified physical size. A 300 DPI output setting refers to printer dots per inch. The figures can happen to be numerically equal, but they describe different stages and do not establish a universal one-to-one requirement. A printer’s DPI does not mean that every source image must have the same PPI.

Adobe’s 2026 Photoshop guidance says most inkjet printers operate in a stated range of 720 to 2,880 DPI. That is printer-output guidance, not a recommendation to supply images at 720 to 2,880 PPI. Adobe also says at least 220 PPI is usually sufficient for high-quality photo prints on an inkjet printer. Its undated consumer PPI guide describes 300 PPI as a common high-quality print target. These are practical rules of thumb, not guarantees or mandatory standards; the print process and intended viewing conditions matter.

Will changing DPI or PPI in Photoshop make an image sharper?

Not by itself. If resampling is disabled, changing the resolution value does not change the file’s pixel count or add captured detail. It changes the physical size implied by those pixels. If resampling is enabled, the editor changes the pixel dimensions, but interpolation cannot recover original detail that the camera or other source never captured. See Adobe’s image-size and resolution explanation for the resolution and resampling controls.

Before changing a resolution field, decide whether you need a different print size, a different pixel count, or both. For a fixed pixel count, making the print larger lowers effective PPI; making it smaller raises effective PPI. Resampling may be appropriate for a delivery requirement, but a larger pixel count created by software is not equivalent to more genuine source detail.

What PPI should you use for print?

There is no single ideal PPI for every print. Adobe’s guidance gives two useful reference points: 220 PPI is usually sufficient for high-quality photo prints on inkjet printers, while 300 PPI is a common target for high-quality print material. Neither number is a universal pass/fail threshold. A large print intended to be viewed from farther away may not need the same pixel density as a small print inspected closely, and print technology affects the result.

Use the final output dimensions and the source image’s real detail to assess effective PPI, then follow the printer or print provider’s specifications for the particular job.

What is LPI, and when does it matter?

LPI means lines per inch. It describes the frequency of a halftone screen used in some print processes—not image pixels and not a printer’s individual output dots. Adobe’s printer guidance says image resolution should generally be 1.5 to 2 times the screen frequency for best halftone results. Treat this as general guidance: the device and print process’s own recommendations should take precedence. Adobe’s Illustrator print-setup guidance covers halftone screens and output considerations.

Does 72 PPI matter for web images?

Not as a required web standard. Adobe presents 72 PPI as a common convention, but pixel dimensions and the target display context are generally more useful for screen assets. A nominal PPI value in image metadata does not determine how many pixels the file contains; display equipment and loading time also affect practical choices. Use dimensions appropriate to the display or layout rather than changing metadata to meet a supposed 72-PPI web rule. Adobe’s PPI guide discusses both the convention and the role of pixel dimensions.

Does a scanner’s DPI setting tell you its true detail?

No. A scanner’s selected sampling rate does not, on its own, establish how much real detail the scanner resolves. Optics, noise, alignment and signal processing affect captured quality. The U.S. National Archives explains that optical resolution is evaluated by how well equipment resolves fine detail on a test target, not simply by the scanner setting. Its 2023 article concerns digitization, including U.S. federal permanent-record requirements; it is not a universal specification for personal scanning or every jurisdiction. Read the National Archives’ explanation of digitization resolution.

The Archives also notes that 300 DPI became a commonly adopted digitization specification in connection with an 8 × 10-inch print viewed at arm’s length. That history does not make 300 DPI a guarantee of quality for every scan, source, or intended use.

How to choose the right resolution for your job

  1. Set the physical output size. Decide how large the print will be, or what pixel dimensions the screen layout needs.
  2. Check the source pixel dimensions. For print, divide pixels by final inches to find effective PPI.
  3. Consider actual source detail and viewing conditions. Pixel count alone does not reveal whether the image contains fine, clean detail.
  4. Check the output process. Use the printer, print provider, or scanner documentation for device-specific requirements; consider LPI when halftone screening applies.
  5. Resample only when needed. Changing metadata without resampling changes the implied print size, while resampling changes pixel dimensions without recreating missing captured detail.
