For one continuous YouTube playlist, the Mac mini M2 appears technically capable; the available specifications do not show that you need an M4 for this job. Apple lists a video decode engine for both models. The M4 adds AV1 decoding, but that specification is not a controlled YouTube playback test and does not establish that a playlist will run more reliably.
For this use, weigh the computer’s cost and your other workloads—not just the chip generation. Neither model’s specifications guarantee uninterrupted playback: YouTube behavior, browser state, network reliability and sleep settings also matter.
What the M2 and M4 specifications tell you
Apple’s technical specifications establish that both models have hardware video-decoding capabilities. They do not establish how either behaves during unattended, continuous YouTube playlist playback.

Power figures: useful context, not a playback comparison
Apple publishes idle and maximum figures for specific configurations, but they are not measurements of YouTube playback and the configurations differ. The maximum labels also differ, so treat these figures as published reference points rather than a like-for-like test.

These figures come from Apple’s Mac mini power consumption and thermal output information. They do not tell you which model uses less power while streaming a playlist; no such comparison is established by these figures.

Which model should you choose?
Choose the M2 if the playlist is the main reason you are buying
The listed decode engine and supported formats make the M2 a technically reasonable choice for ordinary video playback. The available specifications do not show that an M4 is necessary to keep one playlist playing. This is not a promise of uninterrupted playback.
Choose the M4 for its wider specifications or other workloads
The M4 lists a 10-core CPU and AV1 decoding, alongside the same 10-core GPU count listed for the standard M2. Those differences may matter to your broader computing needs, but they do not by themselves prove a practical advantage for continuous YouTube playback. Compare the actual configurations and prices available to you; current prices are not established here.

What these specifications cannot guarantee
A video decode engine concerns the computer’s ability to decode supported video formats. Continuous playback also depends on circumstances outside that specification. A playlist can be affected by YouTube’s playback behavior, browser session state, network interruptions and whether the computer or browser stops playback. The Apple technical pages cited here do not document unattended YouTube playlist behavior or the macOS settings needed to keep it playing.
- Do not treat AV1 support as proof that YouTube will serve a particular video in AV1 or that playback will be more continuous.
- Do not infer YouTube playback power use from Apple’s idle, maximum or maximum-continuous product ratings.
- Judge your actual network connection separately from the Mac’s Wi-Fi and Ethernet specifications.
- Verify current YouTube playlist behavior and macOS sleep controls for your specific setup before relying on unattended playback.
Keep a YouTube stream running without leaving a Mac on
