If FFmpeg then rejects a trusted list as unsafe, add -safe 0. For a single input file, quote its path in your shell command instead.
First identify which kind of playlist you have
“YouTube playlist” can refer to different things. This guide addresses local video files downloaded from a YouTube playlist and listed in an FFmpeg concat-demuxer text file. A YouTube URL or playlist URL is a separate workflow: yt-dlp can download content, after which FFmpeg reads the resulting local paths. That does not establish that FFmpeg itself supports every YouTube URL or playlist form.
- Local concat list: quote or escape each path in the list file, and address any unsafe-path rejection separately.
- One local input: quote the whole path in the shell command used with
-i. - Filename creation: adjust the downloader’s output naming only if you prefer filenames without spaces.
Put filenames with spaces in a concat list
Create a text file such as files.txt with one entry per video. For two files in the same directory as the list, the contents can be:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'video one.mp4'
file 'video two.mp4'The concat demuxer parses the path after file using its own syntax. FFmpeg’s documentation says spaces and special characters must be escaped with backslashes or enclosed in single quotes. Shell quotes around files.txt do not quote the paths inside it. If FFmpeg reports an unsafe path
The concat demuxer’s default safe=1 policy rejects paths containing characters outside a restricted portable set, which excludes spaces. For a list you created and trust, use:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i files.txt -c copy output.mp4-safe 0 relaxes that path validation; it is not a replacement for quoting the list entries. Do not apply it indiscriminately to an untrusted list. The command is an illustrative pattern, not a guarantee for every platform or pair of media files.

Quote a filename passed directly to FFmpeg
If you are reading just one file, the concat-list rules do not apply. Make the entire path one shell argument after -i. For example, in Bash:
ffmpeg -i "video one.mp4" -c copy output.mp4Quoting syntax varies by shell, including Bash, PowerShell, and Windows Command Prompt. FFmpeg also notes that a second escaping layer may be needed when its syntax is embedded in a shell command or script; use the rules for the shell you actually run. Separate filename problems from concatenation problems
Correct quoting makes a path readable; it does not ensure the videos can be joined by stream copy. The concat demuxer virtually joins packet streams and requires the files to have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. It adjusts timestamps across files, and inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts. Check the media properties if the command reads the files but the output fails or behaves badly. When the inputs are not compatible, a workflow that decodes and re-encodes them—such as a concat filter—may be more suitable than -c copy.
Prevent spaces at download time if you prefer
Spaces are valid in ordinary filenames; changing them is optional. If you use yt-dlp and want more restricted output names, its filesystem options document --restrict-filenames for cases where spaces and other special characters are unwanted. This is a naming preference or workaround, not a requirement for FFmpeg to read filenames with spaces.

Troubleshoot the error you see
