Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSet the device scale factor in the browser’s emulated device settings before navigating to the page, then choose the screenshot’s output scale separately. In Playwright, use the context’s deviceScaleFactor; in Puppeteer, set it with page.setViewport() before page.goto(). The factor controls device emulation, while screenshot scale controls whether the image uses CSS pixels or device pixels.
Device scale factor and screenshot scale are different
A device scale factor (often abbreviated DSF) is an emulated device metric. It affects how the browser renders a page for a device with a given pixel density. Screenshot scale determines how CSS-pixel dimensions map to pixels in the saved image. Setting a factor of 2 does not by itself tell every screenshot API to save twice as many pixels.
In Playwright, scale: "css" captures one image pixel per CSS pixel, while scale: "device" captures one image pixel per device pixel. With a device scale factor of 2, a capture spanning W by H CSS pixels is expected to be approximately 2W by 2H image pixels at device scale. This follows from the documented pixel definitions; capture bounds and rounding may affect exact dimensions.
Capture with Playwright
Choose the context viewport and device scale factor when creating the context, before opening and navigating the page. Set the screenshot’s scale explicitly whenever exact output dimensions matter.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const context = await browser.newContext({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 },
deviceScaleFactor: 2,
});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', scale: 'device' });
await browser.close();
})();
This example selects a 1280 × 800 CSS-pixel viewport and a factor of 2; these are chosen values, not universal recommendations. Change the viewport to control the browser’s CSS layout area. Use scale: "css" instead if you want a one-image-pixel-per-CSS-pixel artifact.
Choose the capture area
- Viewport: the currently visible browser area; the example above captures it.
- Full page: the whole page, including content beyond the initial viewport; use
fullPage: true. - Element: capture a particular locator with its screenshot method, for example
await page.locator('main').screenshot({ path: 'main.png', scale: 'device' });. - Clipped region: use the screenshot API’s clipping options when you need a defined portion of the page. Check the API reference for the installed Playwright version for the exact options.
Playwright documents screenshot scope and the CSS-versus-device scale option in its Screenshots documentation; its Emulation guide demonstrates a 2560 × 1440 viewport with deviceScaleFactor: 2.

Capture with Puppeteer
Set the page viewport, including deviceScaleFactor, before navigating. Puppeteer specifically recommends setting the viewport before visiting a page because some sites do not expect the viewport to change after navigation.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({
width: 1280,
height: 800,
deviceScaleFactor: 2,
});
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
Use fullPage: true for a full-page capture; omit it for the viewport screenshot. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide also documents clipping and other capture options. Its references are versioned and may change, so use the documentation that matches your installed package: Page.setViewport() and Screenshots.

Use Chrome DevTools Protocol directly
If your Chromium automation layer does not expose device metrics, the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) provides a lower-level route. Send Page.setDeviceMetricsOverride with viewport dimensions and deviceScaleFactor before navigating, then capture through the protocol or your automation layer.
await client.send('Page.setDeviceMetricsOverride', {
width: 1280,
height: 800,
deviceScaleFactor: 2,
mobile: false,
});
await page.goto('https://example.com');
A factor of zero disables the device-scale override. Protocol support and experimental status can vary by browser version; consult the matching CDP Page and Emulation documentation.

Capture manually in Chrome DevTools
For an interactive capture, Chrome DevTools device mode simulates device conditions and provides a viewport screenshot action. Its documentation also describes capturing with a device frame in device-specific mode. That workflow supports manual viewport capture, but the documented screenshot dialog does not establish a general control for entering any arbitrary custom device scale factor. See Simulate mobile devices with device mode.

Troubleshoot unexpected dimensions or rendering
- The image is the CSS viewport size, not twice as large: In Playwright, check that the screenshot uses
scale: "device". Withscale: "css", output is one pixel per CSS pixel regardless of the expected device-pixel dimensions. - The page layout looks wrong: Set viewport dimensions and device scale factor before navigation. With Puppeteer, changing the viewport after visiting the page may cause sites to behave unexpectedly.
- The screenshot is the wrong area: Confirm whether you need the viewport, full page, an element, or a clip. These capture scopes are distinct; a full-page screenshot is not simply a larger viewport.
- The protocol command is unavailable or behaves differently: CDP APIs and experimental status depend on the browser version. Check the protocol documentation for that version, or use the higher-level Playwright or Puppeteer API.
- A particular screenshot option is rejected: Screenshot APIs evolve. Check the reference for the exact installed Playwright or Puppeteer version rather than assuming a live documentation page matches your package.
Choose the method that matches your workflow
| Method | Best fit | Control and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright | Scripted browser automation | Context-level emulation and an explicit CSS-pixel versus device-pixel screenshot scale. |
| Puppeteer | Scripted browser automation | Set viewport and device scale factor on the page before navigation; screenshot options include full-page and clipped captures. |
| Chrome DevTools Protocol | Direct Chromium control | Lower-level device-metrics override; protocol support can vary by browser version. |
| Chrome DevTools device mode | Manual interactive capture | Simulates device conditions and offers viewport capture; the cited documentation does not establish arbitrary scale-factor input in the screenshot dialog. |
There is no single universally correct factor: select the emulated device density and screenshot scale that produce the rendering and pixel dimensions your use case requires.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a device scale factor change the CSS viewport width?
No. The viewport width is specified in CSS pixels; the device scale factor describes the relationship between CSS pixels and device pixels.
Can I use a fractional device scale factor?
The cited references establish how to set a factor but do not specify a universal supported range across browser versions. Check the documentation for your installed browser automation package.
