For a mostly static rain scene, begin with 1280×720 at 30 fps, then choose a bitrate your connection can sustain reliably. If you stream to YouTube, its H.264 guidance recommends 3 Mbps for 720p30, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Those are YouTube ingest recommendations—not a guarantee that a particular Indian broadband connection can run 24/7. Test from the actual streaming location and watch both OBS and platform stream-health indicators before relying on the setup.
Start with a restrained OBS output
A rain ambience scene usually has little motion, so 30 fps is a sensible trial rather than a universal optimum. Lower output resolution and frame rate can reduce bandwidth and encoding demands compared with more demanding settings. OBS notes that 60 fps can require more system resources than 30 fps, and that output resolution should match the stream output you want.
Trial configuration for a mostly static scene
- Output resolution: 1280×720.
- Frame rate: 30 fps.
- Encoder: Follow the destination service’s supported encoder and ingest guidance. For YouTube’s H.264 figures below, use H.264.
- Rate control and keyframes: If streaming to YouTube, set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
In OBS, the output-scaled resolution determines the resolution sent to the service; choose the canvas resolution to suit your source and scene layout. Test your chosen encoder on the computer that will run the broadcast. These are cautious starting choices for a low-motion scene, not an official OBS rain preset.
Set bitrate for the destination and the connection
Choose the streaming service before settling on a bitrate. For YouTube, its live encoder recommendations for H.264 are 3 Mbps at 720p30 and 5 Mbps at 1080p30. The figures apply to YouTube ingest; another platform may specify different values.

These are encoder recommendations, not minimum broadband-plan speeds or guarantees of a stable stream. OBS says bitrate depends on stable upload speed and the streaming service’s limits. Its connection troubleshooting guidance suggests 75% of total upload speed as a good starting bitrate when diagnosing dropped frames. YouTube separately recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate and notes that other network use can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. Treat these as separate vendor rules of thumb, not a formula to combine.
No India-wide upload-speed figure for this use is established by the sources cited here. A plan’s advertised download speed does not tell you whether its upload is sufficiently stable at your location. Measure and test the actual connection you will use.

Test the real connection before going live
- Connect as you intend to broadcast. Run the computer on the same network and, where practical, the same wired or Wi-Fi arrangement you plan to use during the stream.
- Check upload performance at representative times. A speed test is only a snapshot. If the household regularly uses the connection, test during that kind of shared use too.
- Run a private or unlisted platform test, if available. Send the intended audio, visual loop, resolution, frame rate and bitrate for long enough to reveal instability.
- Inspect both sides of the stream. Watch OBS for dropped frames and system performance, and read the destination platform’s stream-health messages.
- Test recovery behavior. Include a check of the visual loop, audio and reconnect behavior before treating the setup as ready for continuous operation.
OBS strongly recommends testing before the first live stream, and YouTube also advises testing and monitoring stream health.
Make the connection more dependable
- Prefer Ethernet where practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. A wired connection can remove one source of local wireless variability, but it cannot fix an ISP outage, congestion, a poor route to ingest or faulty hardware.
- Leave capacity for other network use. Household uploads and downloads can compete with the stream. YouTube recommends bandwidth headroom rather than using all available upload capacity.
- Use a sustainable output. If bitrate is unstable, lowering it can help the connection sustain the broadcast. For YouTube, check the service’s ingest guidance for the selected resolution and frame rate.
- Enable reconnect options where appropriate. OBS includes automatic reconnect among its advanced settings. Reconnect can help after a brief interruption, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Troubleshoot dropped frames and buffering
OBS reports dropped frames
Dropped frames usually indicate that the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate or that the route to the ingest server is unstable. Reduce the video bitrate and test again; OBS’s 75%-of-total-upload suggestion is a troubleshooting starting point, not a nationwide broadband threshold. If the platform lets you choose an ingest server, try another one. Prefer wired networking if Wi-Fi is in use, and investigate VPNs, security or bundled network software, outdated network drivers, the modem/router and ISP conditions when relevant. Congestion or provider-side changes may be outside your control.

Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames
Broadcaster-side dropped frames and a viewer’s playback buffering are different problems. The viewer’s connection and playback conditions matter. A lower bitrate may make a stream easier to receive, particularly on services that do not transcode. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but that behavior should not be assumed for every platform.
The stream disconnects or the computer struggles
Check whether the problem is a network interruption, encoding load or media-source issue before changing several settings at once. Test the selected resolution and frame rate with the actual scene, monitor OBS performance, and verify reconnect behavior with the intended platform. A 24/7 target is an operational goal; no OBS setting alone guarantees it.
