Save a screenshot of the original page, capture the refactored page at the same route and state under matched rendering conditions, then inspect the baseline, current image, and diff together. A pixel difference is a signal to review—not proof of a regression. For repeatable checks in an existing browser-test suite, Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() compares page or element screenshots with stored references.
Build a comparison that can be trusted
- Choose representative pages and states. List important routes, viewport widths, and interaction states that the CSS changes could affect. Include states such as an open navigation menu or expanded accordion when relevant. Capture the original implementation at each checkpoint before changing CSS; those images are your reference baselines.
- Match the capture conditions. Use the same browser engine and version, operating system, viewport dimensions, device scale factor, fonts, test data, and page state for both captures where possible. Wait for the page to settle, and make dynamic content deterministic. Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance warns that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can all introduce rendering variation.
- Capture the refactored page at the same checkpoints. Compare the same route, state, viewport, and browser context. A full-page screenshot helps reveal overall layout changes; an element screenshot can focus attention on a component affected by the refactor.
- Review the images together. Inspect the baseline, current screenshot, and diff. Classify each visible change as intended, unintended, or likely capture noise. Check important differences against the DOM or computed styles when that helps explain them.
- Approve baseline changes deliberately. If a visual change is intended, review and commit the new reference image. Do not automatically replace a baseline just because a comparison failed.
Choose a comparison workflow
Playwright Test for checks in your browser-test suite
Playwright Test is a natural starting point if your project already runs browser tests. Its toHaveScreenshot() assertion compares a page or element screenshot with a stored reference. The first run creates reference screenshots; later runs compare new captures with those references. Playwright describes this capability in its visual comparisons documentation: “Playwright Test includes the ability to produce and visually compare screenshots using await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot().” The PageAssertions API documentation describes the assertion options.
A small page-level test can look like this:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});
Run it with your project’s configured Playwright Test command, commonly npx playwright test. On the initial run, inspect and retain the generated reference. On later runs, examine any reported diff before deciding whether the CSS change is wrong or the baseline should change.
For a focused component check, use a locator assertion instead:

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
await expect(page.locator('.pricing-card')).toHaveScreenshot('pricing-card.png');
Make the test reach the intended interaction state before taking the screenshot—for example, open the menu or select the relevant tab—and use stable test data. Keep reference images under version control or another reviewable baseline process so intentional updates can be reviewed with the CSS changes.
Set tolerances based on review needs
Playwright exposes maxDiffPixels, maxDiffPixelRatio, and a per-pixel threshold. These settings affect how much pixel variation an assertion accepts. There is no universal correct value: start with strict comparison where the rendering environment is stable, investigate noise, then choose a tolerance that fits the component and review policy. Raising tolerance without understanding the differences can hide genuine regressions.

Chromatic for hosted review and collaboration
Chromatic’s documentation describes a hosted workflow with baseline snapshots and pixel diffs. Its Snapshots documentation explains the baseline workflow; the Diff Inspector documentation describes side-by-side and overlay inspection; and its Playwright setup documentation covers using existing Playwright tests to generate visual snapshots. Consider this route when centralized review and hosted collaboration matter to your team. Current prices and plan limits are not stated here.
Manual image comparison for a one-off check
For a small, one-time comparison, capture both images at identical dimensions and inspect them side by side, as an overlay, or as a generated diff. This can expose obvious shifts quickly, but it does not provide repeatable test coverage or baseline management by itself.

Reduce false alarms without hiding regressions
- Fonts: Make sure the intended fonts have loaded before capture. A fallback font can change line breaks, element sizes, and alignment.
- Animation and transitions: Capture after motion has settled, or use a consistent test strategy for animated states. Otherwise the same page can differ from one capture to the next.
- Time-dependent content: Stabilize timestamps, rotating content, and other values that change with time.
- Unstable data: Use repeatable test data and keep the page state consistent across runs.
- Rendering environment: Keep browser version, operating system, settings, hardware, and headless mode consistent where possible; differences in these conditions can alter the output.
When a diff appears, first confirm that the inputs and capture conditions match. Then inspect the affected area in both images and, where useful, check the relevant DOM or computed styles. Only then decide whether to adjust the test tolerance or approve a new baseline.
Know what a screenshot diff can and cannot verify
A visual comparison tests rendered appearance at the states and viewports you captured. It does not prove that behavior, semantics, or accessibility are correct. Keep functional tests for behavior and add appropriate accessibility checks; use the screenshot diff as a complementary visual check. If the refactor intentionally changes a visual state, define that expectation and review the updated baseline rather than treating every pixel change as a defect.

If you need a hosted capture without setting up a local browser, ScreenshotNeo takes a website screenshot with one GET request. For example, save a reference or review image with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details. Cookie banners are accepted before capture, and 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a matching screenshot prove the CSS refactor is correct?
No. It only shows that the captured rendering matches at the tested checkpoints; it does not establish functional behavior, semantics, or accessibility.
Should I use a page screenshot or an element screenshot?
Use a page screenshot for overall layout and an element screenshot when you want to focus review on a component likely affected by the refactor.
