You can capture a website without a browser extension by using built-in browser tools. Firefox can save full-page, visible-area, selected-region, or element screenshots. Chrome DevTools documents selected-area capture, and an operating-system screenshot is a fallback for what is currently visible. If a managed-browser policy blocks those routes, an API can capture the page outside the browser.
Choose a capture method that matches what you need

Capture a screenshot in Firefox
Use Firefox’s built-in screenshot interface
Firefox’s screenshot interface can capture a selected region, a page element selected on hover, the visible portion, or the full page. After choosing the capture, download it as an image or copy it to the clipboard. Mozilla also documents keyboard accessibility controls for the selection interface. See Firefox Screenshots help.
Capture a full page or element with Developer Tools
- Open Developer Tools and open its settings.
- Under “Available Toolbox Buttons,” enable “Take a screenshot of the entire page.”
- Use the screenshot button to save a full-page capture to Downloads.
- To capture one element instead, open the Inspector, right-click the element in the HTML pane, and choose “Screenshot Node.”

Use the Web Console for options and repeatable captures
Firefox’s Web Console accepts the :screenshot command. The documented options include --fullpage, --selector, --delay, --dpr, --clipboard, --file, and --filename. For example, to capture the full page, enter:

For an element selected by CSS selector, use:
:screenshot --selector "main article"
To wait before capture, specify a delay, such as :screenshot --delay 3. Set a filename with --filename or a file path with --file. Take care not to reuse an existing filename unintentionally: Mozilla warns that saving to an existing name such as test.png overwrites the previous image.
Capture a selected area in Chrome
- Open the page you want to capture and open DevTools.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Pon Windows or Linux, orCommand+Shift+Pon Mac. - Type
screenshotand choose “Capture area screenshot.” - Drag to select the region to save.
Chrome’s documented area-capture command does not work when DevTools is undocked. The official Command Menu guide verifies this area method; it does not establish full-page command steps here. See Chrome DevTools Command Menu.

What to do when Edge screenshot options are blocked
Microsoft documents an Edge management policy named DisableScreenshots. It blocks screenshot keyboard shortcuts and extension APIs, but Microsoft’s policy page says Web Capture within the browser or methods outside it—such as an operating-system feature or another application—may still take screenshots. This is a policy-specific distinction, not a guarantee that a particular route is enabled on every managed device.
Microsoft’s policy documentation lists support from Edge version 77 on Windows and macOS, Android from version 146, and says iOS is unsupported. As of Edge version 154, the policy also prevents extensions from attaching the debugger through chrome.debugger.attach(). These details are version-sensitive; if the browser is managed, check with your administrator whether the policy is applied and which capture methods are allowed. Use an operating-system screenshot for the visible screen
If you only need the part of the page currently on screen, use your operating system’s screenshot function. This avoids browser extensions and works independently of browser capture features. It does not automatically include content below the visible screen, so use a browser’s full-page feature or a capture service when you need the entire page. Platform-specific keyboard shortcuts are not covered here.
Printing a page to PDF may help when you need a document rather than a pixel-faithful screenshot. A PDF is not equivalent to an image capture: pagination and print layout can change how the page appears.

Troubleshooting
- You cannot find Chrome’s area-capture command: Open DevTools first, then use its Command Menu and search for “screenshot.” Confirm DevTools is docked; the documented area method does not work when it is undocked.
- Firefox saved over an earlier capture: The
:screenshotcommand can overwrite an existing filename. Choose a new filename before running it again. - A screenshot contains only the top or visible part of a page: You likely used a visible-screen capture rather than a full-page capture. In Firefox, use the built-in full-page option or enable its full-page Developer Tools button.
- Browser shortcuts or extension-based capture do nothing in Edge: A managed
DisableScreenshotspolicy may be blocking them. Ask the administrator about approved browser Web Capture or operating-system methods. - You need an image but print-to-PDF changes the layout: Printing produces a document layout, not a pixel-faithful screenshot. Use a browser capture feature or an image capture service instead.
